All-round Hafeez sinks Sri Lanka

  shares 232

Pakistan 326 for 5 (Hafeez 140*, Shehzad 81) beat Sri Lanka 213 (Dilshan 59, Gul 3-19) by 113 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

It was only a matter of time until Pakistan's method yielded a heavy victory in the series. As their batsmen conformed to the blueprint they had laid down in the first two matches, Pakistan hit their second mammoth score in three innings, to sink Sri Lanka by 113 runs.

Mohammad Hafeez was again the architect of the victory, shifting from stable at the outset to sublime at the finish on his way to a career-best 140 not out off 136 balls. Following torrid series against South Africa, Hafeez has come upon an approach that has brought a personal change in fortune and lit his team's path to top-order reliability as well. He had hit only one four in his first 36 balls at the crease, but in a furious finish he walloped seven fours and a six off his last 26 balls, leading Pakistan's plunder of 105 in the last 10 overs, and the team score to 326 for 5.

Tillakaratne Dilshan reclaimed fluency at the top of Sri Lanka's innings to sail to his sixth score over fifty in the last eight ODI innings, but Umar Gul's return after nine months mending his knee imbued a venomous edge to the Pakistan attack, particularly with the new ball. Gul struck twice in his second over to pin Sri Lanka down, and though the visitors threatened resurgence, no pair could resist Pakistan for long. They were bowled out in the 45th over, with the required run-rate having floated up to the early twenties.

They might have had fewer to chase had Lasith Malinga held on to a simple chance at long-on off Hafeez in the 18th over. Hafeez's progress thereafter was as silken as the first phase of his knock was stubborn. Gaps square of the wicket were his staple, but on another terrific batting track that exposed Sri Lanka's inability to penetrate, he was fearless, yet calculated in attack as well. He used his feet to hit the spinners over the leg side as a matter of routine, and he pounced on abundant poor balls from Sri Lanka's allround seam bowlers.

Ahmed Shehzad had been the first to hit out, and the pair forged a 162-run stand for the second wicket, at the end of which a score in excess of 300 seemed an inevitability.

This, after they Pakistan made their most sedate start of the series, thanks in large part to the movement Nuwan Kulasekara generated with the new ball. Only one boundary had been hit in the first seven overs, which yielded only 18 runs. In that time Pakistan had also lost Sharjeel Khan to Kulasekara, with the score on 2.

Pakistan had been 62 for 1 after 15 overs, but Shehzad and Hafeez scored 100 off the next 95 balls, finding easy runs into the outfield and peppering the long-on ropes with aplomb. Shehzad reached his fifty in 57 balls, and by the time Lasith Malinga ran him out for 81 in the 31st over, Pakistan was scoring at well over five runs an over.

Sohaib Maqsood showcased talent and inexperience in equal measure during his run-a-ball 21, that featured fine strokes but an injudicious attempt for a third six in the 39th over. After Maqsood fell, Misbah-ul-Haq was the unlikely source of a cameo, as Pakistan sought to reap the benefits of their solidity in the first three-quarters of the innings. His 26-ball 40 featured three fours and two sixes - largely off the seamers - while Hafeez too kicked up an already rising run rate into overdrive.

Sri Lanka have been unimaginative with the ball throughout the series, and yorkers once again seemed their only defence against death-over aggression. But even that ploy might have yielded results, had they managed to find the blockhole with acceptable regularity. Malinga was the only fast bowler to finish with an economy rate under six, as Hafeez, and later Umar Akmal feasted on mediocre lengths at the climax. Kulasekara was the worst offender. After having conceded only 19 from his first six overs, he surrendered 48 from his last four.

Sri Lanka's troubles were compounded by the two early Gul strikes. They needed seniors Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara to post a triple-figure stand to set the chase properly on track. Prolific though they have been together over the last two years, they parted ways much too early on this occasion. Sangakkara pulled Junaid Khan to square leg with the score on 44, and it was a steep ask for Dilshan to lead a heist after that. He still swashbuckled his way to 59 off 62, before Shahid Afridi bowled him.

Gul's early strikes had also allowed Misbah to reserve Saeed Ajmal's overs until the 25th over, and Hafeez until the 28th. Together they choked out what remained of the resistance. Dinesh Chandimal got his third start of the series, in somewhat unconvincing fashion, but got out trying to slog Hafeez.

Angelo Mathews began slowly and then tonked a few big blows as the required rate ballooned, but wickets continued to fall to spin at the other end, and Sri Lanka's chances wore thin. Gul bowled Malinga to finish with 3 for 19, and Pakistan took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Mathews had won the toss and bowled first on a terrific batting strip again, fearing the late-evening dew that had hampered Sri Lanka's bowlers in the Twenty20 series. He may rethink that strategy after dew failed to materialise in each of the ODIs so far, just as Misbah had predicted at the toss.

Harmony111, Nothing to compare Misbah with Swann, Mr tuk tuk was the highest run getter in a calendar year and is the only 100% fit player in the current team. Hafeez we all know is a flop against the quality bowling and on any fast track. Players like Afridi and Hafeez perform once in a blue moon to secure their places for the next series.

Bhatti has been not bowling to the mark as he gave runs at an economy of 6.5 in the 2nd ODI without getting any wickets. I think its time Anwar Ali should be given another chance and let him also grow and mature as he is 26 already and Bhatti is only 21 or 22.

Well Done to hafeez but I still don't think he's #3 material..He has shown what he is against quality pace on nonfavoring pitches and if he continues like this, then The world cup in AUS will be troublesome. His Spin is also very useful tho even tho it hasn't been up to par in these last few matches....If he works on his technique, he's a very talented man but I still think he should bat @Number 6 or 5 since number 3 or 4 is usually our best batsmen.... #3 S Maqsood, #4M ul Haq, 5 and 6.between hafeez and akmal depending on who thinks what...Btw akmal doesn't need to bat up the order, he needs to give keeping up since its spoiled his chances of being a topclass batsmen. Hafeez is a gem in the subcontinent tho.

with reference to issues on the field theres no smoke without fire. I saw the incident with Shezad although I didn't have the sound up so couldn't work out the issue. However what does a wicketkeeper gain by pretending to have received the ball forcing a player to make a full length dive. To some that might be amusing but for me I would have requested my quickest bowler to let one fly next time Sanga batted.

Misbah should retire, he should follow Swan's example. As Misbah may never win any game for Pak and his captaincy is clumsy, he will never learn....Misbah mostly invisble during Pak fielding, it appears as Afridi, Hafeez and Umar Akmal is running the team... Hafeez did well on batting wicket. I hope he will continue like this. I hope Umar Akmal will get chance to bat up in top 4/5 - he is still the best batman in new generation of Pak finding but detroyed my Selfish captaincy.... Mr. Tuk Tuk should rotate Anwar Ali and Bhatti - help Anwar to grow at international arena.....

What was the last trophy SL won outside SL? Asia Cup perhaps?

What was the last trophy SL won outside SC? --- Dunno.

What was the last trophy SL won outside Asia? --- Dunno.

What was the last trophy SL won anywhere? --- Dunno.

Don't talk about bilateral series, I am talking about at least tri-series cups.

The strong SL bowling has given two 300+ scores & one 280+ scores to Pak in this series. Pak, whose most vociferous fans would admit that their batting is not that strong. Imagine what India or Aus or SA would do to SL then.

I am 100% positive that at the moment, BD are much much better than SL. They will thrash SL in ODIs as well as Tests. SL fans need to see the reality and admit their team is mediocre & is getting worse. The day Malinga retires, SL will start leaking 400+ runs routinely.

This was a good team win. I am sure Misbah isn't following fan criticism to change team dynamics. Fans want to change the team everyday. He was not forced to go with Gul. Gul is fully recovered now, so he is in the team. The Misbah critics need to get a dose of reality. He is the best man for the job. He bats sensibly and makes good decisions. Fan of Misbah from BD.

  • POSTED BY bouncer709 on | December 23, 2013, 17:58 GMT

Misbah fans please stop hype about this innings, I didn't see any thing special here, It was poor display of bowling from Srilankan bowler. Misbah hit all the 5 boundaries on full-tosses that Srilankans bowlers offered, so it was due on Misbah to hit these poor bowls out of park. do you guys think he should have blocked these bowls too? any thing that was pitched by Srilankan bowlers to Misbah he missed it or hardly took single, even missed few poor full-toss balls too. and at the end was out on full-toss.

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 17:04 GMT

It was a good win for Pak. The only sad thing out of the match was Shehzad-Dilshan incident. I believe that it was a friendly tap and Shehzad must have behave d sensibly. Dilshan, Sanga, Mahela (Murli and Sanath too) are good guys and have respect in the hearts of Pakistanis.

This type of fight is really not good for the game. you have all the right to not respect the Pakistani team but we Pakistanis always consider Srilanka the next to Pakistan and this is the reason we love to cheer for you. I hope these type of incidents would be forgotten soon.

i have to say the way the Pakistani player Ahmed Shezard behave was really bad. no respect for Dilshan at all. i just lost my respect for Pakistan

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 14:59 GMT

Guls return & Critics forced Misbah to go with two bowlers upfront which resulted in early wickets and a huge win. U got to get early wickets to retrict opposition. Hafeez is better in the middle overs where he can contain the batsmen from scoring runs. It would have been better if Misbah opted for Junaid and Bilawal for the opening spell in the previous encounters rather than useless Tanvir and Hafeez which already costs us a game. Hope Irfan get in shape soon, and we can forever say good bye to Tanvir.

If some day misbah retires, i am afraid that i may lose interest in Pak cricket.. He is the back bone of this team, at the age of 40 he is full of energy, just like a kid of 20's. I am really going to miss him after 2015 world cup, i wish he could win that world cup, i even wish he could play T20 worldcup 2014. Misbah I am your fan. Ppl criticize you because they dont like you. I consider him among one of the top players of world of cricket. He took over the captaincy when pakistani cricketers were under the elegations of spot fixing and he had the worst team of all times pak's cricket, but he was always the anchor person in this team, he has given so much to this team that the space here is not enough write. He is the leading run getter of this year with an average of 55, who else at this age had performed, answer is no one. I respect him, and others too should respect him. He has always saved his team from sinking, even if we lost we lost respectable bcoz of his solo super innings.

All we do is lose and we label ourselves LIONS. We can't play on flat tracks, we can't play on green tracks, we can't play on slow tracks. All we can do is fight. Well when your most talented young batsmen are chandimal and thirrimanne and we consider a slogger who trundles to be our IRON MAN then what can we expect. As a Sri Lankan I have to admit that this is the most hopeless team of SL ever but my fellow fans will still not see the reality but will come up with some new excuses. Our fellow supporters are too busy mocking other sub continental teams that they don't realize we are the losing the tag of being a dangerous team. The day has come when any team will be happy to play us to boost their ranking or to get some confident like NZ C team did, when NZ A team was comprehensively beaten by BAN but their C team won a match and could pose a fight as well. Lead the way LIONS.

No.1 team in Asia SL was bowled out for 43 when last time they visited SA, Pak was bowled out for under 50 as well. Anyway you don't have the stats to prove. Tell me which tournament SL has won outside sub continent. India has won WCin ENG, T20 WC in SA, World championship in Aus, CT in ENG. name one trophy by mediocre SL outside Asia then claim SL as the no. 1. Real ranking are these 1 India, 2 PAK, 3 BAN as they really humiated SL in their own den, 4. Afghan(coz they can give fight) 5. Nepal(Again with limited resources they can give fight) then a distant 6. SL.

Now Misbah will never demote him in the line up nor he self would like to be demoted. Pak still have well finishers in the form of Akmal and Afridi, Bhatti could be a bonus... Pakistan slowly and steadily is going to be a strong unit. perhaps they will find it difficult to face the pace in AUS n NZ, but hard work will make it easier or less difficult...

  • POSTED BY Messa1 on | December 23, 2013, 11:25 GMT

This loss has got nothing to do with the captaincy but it is the fault of that clown Lasith Malinga. He dropped the catch of Hafeez when he is on 26, who went on to make 145. That turned the whole game around. Malinga is not playing for the country anymore, he's playing for money. He's currently thinking about the AUS$'s he's gonna get from the BBL. Therefore Malinga needs to be dropped from the team and need to bring in a different bowler. eg Eranga or Pradeep

The first thing SL look confused about is figuring out which player is suited to which format. SL has hardcore T20 players playing ODIs, test players player T20 and ODIs. I wouldnt be surprised if SL turn up with their same team in tests as in T20s.

About, Ind vs SL, lesser said the better...

To win matches you need to take wickets. Malinga has declined rather rapidly. He can still come back to the top but he needs to keep an eye on his fitness.

We cannot win matches with one dimensional bowlers. We need people who can bounce and york batsmen out and out think them with superb slower ones.

Bring back Dilhara Fernando and give him a fair go!

Good knock by Hafeez (even though he was dropped) but he is inept at rotating the strike and has a great ability to the find the boundary, which would make him the perfect number 6 or 7.

Also, Gul is back and he has come back a better bowler because he was pitching the ball up more regularly, rather than banging it in half way like he was pre-injury and he reaped the rewards in the end.

Lastly, I don't know what happened to Misbah but if he is out for the series, then Haris must be given a chance and NOT the failure, Shafiq.

sri lankan bowling is very poor , no one can bowl bouncers,. any one didnt bounce the bowl. all kule, mali, & lakmal tries to yokers. so best option is call dilhara or charith jayampathi . think dilhara(147 matches 187 wick) is a wicket taking bowler which second to lasith (158 match 238 wick). kula (145 matche 165 wicket) call dilhara fernando

other option: senanayake is not a good odi spinner ( 19 matche 18 wick 38.05 ave)

call suraj randiv ( 28 matches 33 wickets 30.01 ave) . Randiv is a best odi spinner in the sri lanka, His spinning bouncer is very fine. senanayake has no variation like randivs spinning bouncer, doosra & spped off spin bowl. senanayake has only googly. but senanayake will be a good test player than randiv.

call randiv & dilhara, best luck

I think the coching standard in pak domestic circut is very weak, look it Sharjeel Khan technique which consists lot of flaws.Pak coching staff should guide him to remove weakness from his batting technique.@Deshwani totally agree with you pak hv bowling coch M.Akram but whats he doing with Bhatti,he should guide bhatti because he bowl with lot of pace.

When Malinga bowls, fields and catches like that, I wonder what Suranga Lakmal has to do to get back into the team. Tissara perera has become a damp squib who is unable to produce his usual fireworks, both in batting and bowling.I think it is time to try out other promising players, before we can win any matches.

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 9:02 GMT

I dont agree that Irfan-gul-junaid should be playing together. in this series, our top order is performing & Afridi scoring. but we all know how consistent hafeez & Afridi can be. So 3rd fast bowler should be an all rounder. (bhatti/Anwar or any1)

Area of concern is medium pace batting all rounder. Billawal has speed but what is coach doing? He should work hard on his line and length. only speed will not benefit him in longer run. & not much batting required in this series so cant say much. Anwar should get a chance in remaining 2 odis.

Maqsood is good player but he may end up like another umar akmal. in almost all games, he gets out while hitting. and most of time unnecessary. Need to have a balance between both. yesterday 1st he played many dots and then in 1 over tried to hit everything. make his starts to bigger ones.

Sharjel has played 5 innings and out of 5, 2 were 50s, 1 was ok (18runs) & 2 were single digits. So too early to say much. May be after the series we can analyse.

Well played by Pakistan. Ahmed played well. Hafeez played well for his 100. both were too slow in start. but ahmed catch up for that. Hafeez accelerated late. After his 100. Too many dot balls though. Maqsood end up well but i think he got carried away. Already hit 2 sixes from the over so no need to hit everything.

well played by Misbah. that was a timely innings and gave the momentum to pakistan as they were going no where in that Power play. And scored a lot quickly. Good cameo. and at right time. Afridi couldnt repeat his last 4 innings show but umar akmal did it instead of him. Good little cameo from him.

gul was the difference for pak. good comeback after9 months. good fileding & no weak link in bowling. hardly any error. everything went well. highest score in sharjha

SL never got going after early wickets. winning toss & bowling will not work all time with so many all rounders. there was no dew in last 2 games and pak bolwers will not allow to chase big in every game.

A good show put up by Pakistan while Srilanka just had some excellent ground fielding performances this time around. Hafeez drop catch cost them heavily. One thing to mention here was the incidence between Dilshan & Ahmed Shehzad during second innings, It was ugly from both players. Had it happened between India & Pakistan I would have had the same reaction because its not the spirit of the game. Srilanka & Pakistan are friendly foes & series played so far reflects mutual respect, friendship & fair competition so management from both sides must make their players realize the magnitude that its not a game between two teams but between sporting representatives of two nations.

Chandimal's batting is a worrying factor. He blocks 6 balls and try to smack the ball out of the park every other over. This builds pressure not only in him self but also in the other end.He is partially responsible to sanga's rash shot too. Also his run making shots are very risky, looks good when they comes off but as proved many a times they contribute to his downfall. We cannot go much further with this type of middle order batting.

This match has exposed Srilanka's vulnerability with the ball. At the same time, it has made pakistan's bowling look like THE BEST in the world at present, even better than the proteus. * We have tall fast bowlers like Irfan and Wahab which can bowl around 150 km/h. * We have world's best death bowlers like Gul and Junaid who can bowl very good with the new ball too. * We have trio of World's best Spinners i.e. Afridi, Ajmal and Hafeez, two of them extra ordinary allrounders. * We have excellent medium pacers in shape of Bilawal Bhatti, Anwar Ali, Ehsan Adil who can bat as well. * Youngesters like Usman Shinwari and Muhammad Talha backing up. * Last but not the least, Muhammad Amir is gonna return someday... Yahooo

This series remains a win toss win match scenario. The problem for SL is that Pak are statistically likely to win the next toss, bat first and win the match. Simple as that on batting tracks with 2 evenly balanced and matched teams.

"we bowl first, we are good at chasing"-mathews at the toss..good chasing team? yes came close 1st game, won second game..not really, Sri Lanka displayed very poor batting in those games but that just hidden by the effort which put by tailenders..The worst thing is Sri Lanka just accept it and forget about their weakness. This is one of the best Sri Lankan team with a very good player as a very poor captain...Everybody just praise him because of his ability to finish a game and now he takes game to the wire even it doesn't need to be...The truth is mathews do nothing to change the game when pressure builds. He just watch and watch when it just pass away and in the end try to make a miracle..For a example take the last game he should have taken the powerplay when kula/seekku came to the middle..When mathew is just a player that mentality is good but now it effects whole team beacause he is the captain.Sri Lanka becoming a underdog like west indies which makes miracles sometimes..

Bilawal can be a good bowler as he has enough pace but he hasnt brain.. just need to guide him... this team is completed now only waiting Irfan in replace of Bilawal.. but Misbah should give chance to Anwar instead Bilawal in next two matches.. thatz the missing bowler we need.. Mr. Gul.. a wicket taker in start the inning... I hope Tanvir will never come back..

I think now we should not be criticising Hafeez and Misbah. Just remember players go through bad patches. So support your heroes next time they go through a bad patch instead of critcising them. Remember no player is perfect. Hafeez may have a weakness against the fast moving ball but then he is an all rounder and many genuine batsmen may have a similar problem against the moving ball. Pakistan has a lot of young inexperienced players in team and we need stable heads of Misbah, Umer Gul and Hafeez to equalize this inexperience. Well done Pakistan! Keep it up!

Victory is very satisfying for us being Pakistani fans, but really impressed to c the Lankans team, it really balanced and I have to say that they had eleven batsmans as malinga can also be lethal at times. Good to c that our team did not show any complacency at all and boys looked using their best efforts throughout the game as evidenced from their body language otherwise it could have the replica of first ODI. As both teams are almost equally strong, Matthews should opt first batting in coming matches, if he wins the toss to test the Pakistani run chase which is very fragile. Omer Gul come back is also vital as he is a quality bowler bowled at good pace in right areas not like Sohail Tanveer who always tried varieties and got punished most of times. Further Pak should also try Anwar Ali in place of Bilawal as he also got talent of an all rounder. We know Lankans will come strongly, our team should do their best to decide the series by winning the 4th match.

But such a result shows the difference in quality of both teams.

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 5:17 GMT

  • POSTED BY ms2000 on | December 23, 2013, 5:17 GMT

Congrats Pakistan! I am happy that Sri Lanka lost due to very poor captaincy by Mathews deciding to field first! This is an eye opener for the selectors. Chandimal should bat down the order. Sachitra and Prasanna shoud have batted earlier. Most importantly Sri Lankans bowlers must learn from the Pakistanis where to bowl. Even a kind by now knows Malinga will try to bowl all yorkers. What happened to his bouncers! so many mistakes cost the match. Dimuth karunaratne is not ready for 1 days. He is a good test player as Thirimane. Sanath should know better!

  • POSTED BY IndianCoolGuy on | December 23, 2013, 5:17 GMT

Congratulations to Pakistan for sinking SriLanka. What a fantastic win for Pakistan. Hafeez is one of the best all rounder in the world. For SriLanka, they should understand that luck would not follow then again and again. Forget about winning, but SriLanka at least could not give the fight. Lanka was never in a position to win the match. Its a complete one sided match. Winning a ODI match with more than 100 runs is not at all acceptable now a days. Positive signs for Lanka is their captain Sanga at least stepped down one position. He should have done that long before. Advance Congratulations to Pakistan for winning the series.

  • POSTED BY Prabhash1985 on | December 23, 2013, 5:13 GMT

Everything is a learning experience. I hope Sri Lanka will improve based on these things. It's ok to lose, especially to Pakistan... So, at least now, Sri Lanka should realize that they need a stronger bowling attack. Dimuth needs to find his rhythm. In last match also, he played a scoop or a paddle sweep, and the ball almost kissed offstump. Even though I like him a lot, I would say, try someone else like Kithruwan, or Kaushal Silva for his slot. There are so many mistakes. It's ok, but you need to learn from them, and try to correct them. I personally think chasing was a good decision. In these pitches, it's very difficult to set a target.

Well comprehensive win for Pakistan . As a SL fan , i m disappointed on short sightings of our selectors . we are lagging so much in bowling .bowlers are either out of form or just not having enough variety in modern day game . can t expect concede 300 and win as Pak team got good crop of bowlers . Even Mathews did not decide to bat after winning toss doubting his bowlers ability to defend . But he should bat first and see next time . need to work out bowling unit . bring Mendis or Priyanjan for Thisara who is neither batting nor bowling well atm. If Malinga can not give 100% in field , throw him out . Give one more chance to Dimuth anyway . Good luck Sri Lanka .you have everything to play. Come on .

Congrats to Pakistan for a very professional allround performance. Sri Lanka as usual came up with an inconsistent performance. Dilshan & Sangakkara should take the blame for this batting display having so much of experience did not apply themselves to reach this formidable score. Thisara Perera looks totally out of form and one cannot understand why the team management is persisting with him. His mediocre bowling and poor batting have contributed to Sri Lanka's downfall in the recent matches. Malinga too does not show any motivation playing for his country with his lackadaisical approach. The under performing cricketers should be reviewed and appropriate action should be taken by the selectors to replace them immediately. Mathews should also re-think his strategy in deciding whether to bat or bowl on a match by match basis instead of sticking to the same plan which misfired last night.

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 4:10 GMT

I quite agree with Vijaya Chandran. I wonder what they see in Malinga. In the past he was a wicket taking bowler. Now he is a run giving bowler at the end of an innings. It would be better to play minus him as his mind maybe with the Big Bash where he could pocket a few more Aus $. Also SL btsmen can't be too happy getting a forty or a fifty and throwing their wicket. Chasing a big score they should take responsibility.

  • POSTED BY AS7777 on | December 23, 2013, 4:10 GMT

Don't blame Mathews alone for decision to chase the target as this could be a collective decision but I also believe if the wicket is good for batting no matter what they should have opt to bat. Give some rest to Tissara Perera and bring Ashan Priyanjan as he is a top order batsman and capable bowler too. Secondly give Vithanage a chance replacing Karunaratne.

Mathew once again showed his perfect 'immaturity' in captaincy. He knows very well that Sharjah ground is good for 1st batting however, he won the toss and invited Pak to bat. Paks are in very good form of batting and especially this was the deciding match for both team. Mathew's dew dreams should be washed out by the seniors like Sanga, Dilshan, Kula etc. Mathew should always consult the seniors before going for a decision. Once again its his immaturity only and not cricket.

One wonders what is wrong with Mathews. Won the toss in all three matches and put the opposition in, and for what? They run huge scores. It appears that Mathews is mostly in the sphere of influence wondering what would happen to his batsmen if the face Pakistan bowlers on first lease of wicket. One look at his body language tells that he is not in control where as Sanga or Mahela shows in the field that they are in control. When the skipper has a negative attitude, that infects the whole team. The dew was favoring Pakistan and they got seam movement when Sri Lanka batted. Clearly a case of faulty strategies. Unless the top is really green which in this match was not, Lanka should have batted and put pressure on other side. Malinga is now only a shadow of his former self erring all the time and no focus. Once Sanga and Mahela retires, Lanka will need divine help not to sink to the bottom of the rankings. Time Sanath looked at it as a whole. Coaching today is about the mind set.

First of all great win by Pakistan, but we must not forget that Hafeez was dropped after playing a selfish hand once again, he did make up for it afterwards, good for him. Ahmed Shahzad needs to rotate the strike a bit more and be aggressive. Apart from Maqsood and Sharjeel no one has that X-factor of smashing the bowlers and taking it all onto them. Our bowling today was splendid, and showed how a experience player can make a difference. Bravo to Pakistan, and good luck to Sri-Lanka.

Gul's inclusion made a big difference otherwise it could have been a close contest like 1st ODI. Bhatti bowls with good pace but unable to take wickets, Pakistan should give chance to Anwar Ali rather.

SL fans firstly look at their teams performance before making any comments on indian bowling. Even pak team scored almost 300 thrice.

Pak should stop playing cric with mediocre teams like SL and BD which will only help them loose the sharpness and intensity they obtain having played with S.Africa.More matches with Aus,Ind and S.Africa please...SLs are no good in any part of the world, not even in their backyard...

  • POSTED BY likeintcricket on | December 23, 2013, 0:44 GMT

Somehow I think Pakistan is getting close to right ODI unit. Still they need a genuine quick bowler to take care of Tailenders and a really good pinch hitter. I am not sure of Hafeez abilities but when in good form he seems to have all the shots. If Pakistan win the 4th one, they should try to chase the target. Sri Lankans has ability to come back due to their long batting line up but I think Pak bowlers are learning more and more of them each day and they will not bowl badly against them like they did in first ODI. I think these three sub continent team are nearly equal in ODI and they can beat each each other on their day. I wish these three can play a tri series some time in the future.

  • POSTED BY on | December 23, 2013, 0:31 GMT

Dinesh Chandimal's batting looks horrible. 36 runs with 3 fours off 53 balls when you are chasing over 320 runs. If this team continues till the next world cup SL will be thrown out in the preliminary round itself.

  • POSTED BY ameen786 on | December 23, 2013, 0:25 GMT

Congrats to Pakistan Team they played really well today. If they perfome same as like this in Batting Department i am sure with thier bowling attack no one can beat them in the world. Irfan,Junaid,Gull,Ajmal, hafeez and afridi this is the best bowling attack a Captain can have in his team. Now where are the critics who were blaming Misbah for all defeats???? Cricket is a Team Game if win give credit to whole team if lose same has to blame for whole team. Misbah the highest Run geater in 2013 a great Acchivement for 39 years old player and he is fitter than most of the players. I wish the batting goes same like this i am sure they will perform better in 2015 world Cup.

  • POSTED BY Haiderpakawsome on | December 23, 2013, 0:11 GMT

    Hafeez you're truly a legend…………

It is only 2 days ago when I had given some comparision of Hafeez with Sanga and I said they are equal in terms of match winning ability. However many SL and Indian fans didn't agree. I think they were right. Hafeez and Sanga ability is not equal. But Hafeez is 10 times better. Today's score speaks for itself. Sanga scored only 14 (and got out) while Hafeez score unbeaten 140.

Luck can only win a T20 for SL or 1-2 odi at the most. Their batter's real test would be during when they face Pak quicks in the test series.

  • POSTED BY AnotherCricketer on | December 23, 2013, 0:05 GMT

Anwar Ali needs a chance in the game. Bhatti has been a non-factor. Also, Dev Whatmore deserves credit for Pakistan's change of fortunes as well. I don't expect any praise from Mohsin Khan. But the media and the players should be more forthcoming in giving credit where it is deserved. Thanks to Moin Khan for backing deserving cricketers in the team at the right time. All we got from Mohsin Khan was the near constant face of Imran Farhat in the face of debilitating failures time and again.

  • POSTED BY Desihungama on | December 22, 2013, 23:59 GMT

SL plays Pakistani bowling best out of all other teams and they know that. At times you can get carried away with decisions. You should bat first in UAE and look to bat other team out which is exactly what Pak did.

  • POSTED BY siabbasi on | December 22, 2013, 23:57 GMT

That's what was missing, an opening spell the way we saw in 3rd match.

Right Hand Gul and from the other hand lefty Junaid, deadly combo.

    Irfan - Gul - Junaid - Ajmal - Afridi - Bhatti.

Bhatti this kid is doing amazing job in middle overs a very timely replacement it seems for Abdul Razzaq.

Sohaib Maqsood - Hope you are not another Umar Akmal, we see a match winner in you.

Sharjeel - Please don't become next Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat or another opener with Great Start to career and never consistent.

  • POSTED BY Messa1 on | December 22, 2013, 23:51 GMT

Drop Malinga, he's becoming more predictable cas he's bowling only yorkers as commentators were saying therefore he's useless and keep conceding more runs. Also his fielding is awful thanks to his dropped catch of Haffeez, Pak won this game!!! DROP MALINGA and bring in Shaminda Eranga or Nuwan Pradeep both who can bowl 140+k's(can bat a bit as well) and both of them field much better than the club level(under15) fielding of Malinga!.

Where are Misbah bashers gone today? No one is recognizing his effort tonight. His cameo of 40 in 26 balls was far better than Hafeez's century in my opinion. Come on people, plz appreciate Misbah today for his brilliant innings where he have bated at a strike rate of over 150.

  • POSTED BY St.John on | December 22, 2013, 22:33 GMT

Mathews gifted this match by not batting first on a perfect batting strip. He talks about dew but I'm guessing he is personally afraid to bat first and secondly doesn't trust his team's batting prowess. Takes nothing away from the Pakistani team though, ably lead by Hafeez. I wouldn't go so far as to describe Malinga's bowling as garbage, but he has declined considerably and is no longer a real threat to any team...

Misbah is so defensive that after PP SL was 3 down and also under required run rate.BUT instead of going with main striking bowler Ajmal he went with Bhatti. Any others captain would go with Ajmal and Afrid and keeping that pressure continue. If Misbah went that approach the match would finished way earlier than it finished.

Hafeez heroics have home side cruise to an easy win in Sharjah. There were also impressive contributions in batting from his team mates Shehzad, Sohaib, 'Skipper' and 'Keeper'. With the ball, Gul made a memorable comeback to the international circuit while Junaid was spot-on again. Spinners seemingly have of late been subjected to some strong slog shorts. For future outings, they need, at least, to keep things nice and tight. Anyway, after all those closely-fought,nailbiting cricket contests, here comes a one-sided one for the Green Shirts. So, sorry Sri Lankans! Everyday is not a Sunday (though today is Sunday).

@ICCexpert: Hafeez hit his highest ODI score today at a good strike rate. He hit a century two innings back. He is the sixth highest run scorer in ODI this year with four hundreds.

Ahmed Shehzad scored a century in last game and today made good 81.

What else do you want from them?

It's Sharjeel Khan who has failed twice. He should be under scrutiny. I must say if he fails again, he should be kicked out to bring back Nasir Jamshed.

The only disappointing is Bilawal Bhatti. He have got pace but no brain, he just comes and throw every ball with constant 142-143km case, no variations, even no change in pace. He need guidance. and need to improve otherwise he is another Yasir Arafat. Even Yasir Arafat was better. Hope in next match they give chance to Anwar Ali.

Mathews i think underestimate the Pak bowling. everybody knows that Pak are not good enough to chase the runs. Srilanka should bat first once they won the toss. and also they have depth in their batting to set a good total on the board. but at the end i am happy that we won it...

  • POSTED BY android_user on | December 22, 2013, 18:33 GMT

Good little cameo from him.

gul was the different for pak. good comeback after9 months.

good fileding & no weak link in bowling. hardly any error. everything went well. heighest score in sharjha

SL never got going after early wickets. winning toss & bowling will not work all time with so many all rounders. there was no dew in last 2 games and pak bolwers will not allow to chase big in everygame.

Hard work done by the top order and now Pak is finally establishing into a formidably balanced team again. Sri Lanka fought till the end like usual but their top order failed and the power hitters at the tail can't do everything....Chandimal and Mathews should be promoted for future purposes since Sanga, Dilly and Mahela don't have much left...

Whats with the batting order of SL, looks like they will have lucky draws for their batting position since they are all the same from 1 to 10, go for slog every ball..

The irony between the two sides playing this series is that; Pakistani cricketers (Specially bowlers), sadly, who we would love to have playing for different teams in IPL are not allowed to play and SL cricketers, inspite of being available and associated with different teams dont get a chance to make it to the playing XI because they are club level. (KJP for RR, TMD for MI, AM for PWI and KS for i guess SRH)

Gul has already done what Tanvir couldn't do, dismiss! Especially when his wickets were crucial top order ones. Hafeez is actually quite underrated, yes he's not the greatest against quality pace but he structures his innings very well, similar to Javed Miandad, however he has been apart of many runouts tho... Shehzad is building form....Maqsood is becoming a bit mindless but he has a lot of potential... And as you can see Misbah, opening with two quality pacers leads to crucial wickets...Goodbye Tanvir, please stick to T20s only, not even that with Gul back

I watched every game of this series from my living room couch in the USA since it started and I will admit its like watching block buster movies, over and over again. Absolutely excellent cricket, great sportsmanship and competitive play by both teams. Neither team has been able to totally dominate the other, fierce competition between bat and ball. Every time Pakistan look like they are gaining control their comes Sri Lanka storming right back showing their character and quality. But the type of cricket on display has been really high quality with both teams putting up great scores almost every single game. Even the commentary has been super high quality from Danny Morrison and Waqar Unis it has been a cricket lover's dream to watch and listen. Danny Morrison in my opinion is second to no one except probably the Australian Micheal Slater, they are the absolutely 2 best commentators in the modern day game, they keep the TV viewers excited throughout all games.

It is going be hard for Pakistani bowlers because this wicket has more run than batsmen score. Pakistani scored 30 to 40 run short.

good target set by pak they all play exceptionally well and up to the mark, now upto bowlers . i think with umer gul pak should gon'a win this by at least 50 to 60 runs

This is what happens when you play top team like SA through out the year. Pak's batting looks to have gone to a whole new level. Battle hardened what they say.

Sri Lanka should have batted first after winning the Toss. It is very difficult to chase big totals at night since the ball tends to swing more and also the spinners get ability to spin the ball in the 2nd half. SL must have thought about the Dew at night but Dew is very less in the winter in UAE with the winds blowing.

    Srilankans bolwer should weak up

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 14:59 GMT

Well played by Pakistan. Ahmed played well. Hafeez played well for his 100. 2nd time 1000+ & 20 wickets in a year. both were too slow in start. but ahmed catch up for that up to an extent.

Good cameo.

Afridi couldnt repeat his last 4 innings show but umar akmal did it instead of him. Good little cameo from him.

Good score and Gul for tanvir will be the deciding factor. Fingers crossed because he is coming after 9 months.

I'm afraid this is gonna be bit too stiff for SL. Ending up with 327 to chase after putting the opposition in..well I'll just say it's the wrong decision. Mathews better pray for butter on the field today as just dew won't save us!

Nice to see Siri Lanka Players patting Hafeez for playing well - Good cricket spirit - How it should be.

Good to see pakistan take powerplay wen 2 set batsmen are there. too many teams think you have to take it at the 35th over

Need 356 from Pakistan in 50 overs; including total 20 sixes! After that: Game on!!!

Anyone reckons Misbah still has a slow scoring rate :)

  • POSTED BY priceless1 on | December 22, 2013, 14:11 GMT

when will SL selectors realize that SL team looses so many ODI matches because of Thisara Perera

  • POSTED BY Durfitaymoo on | December 22, 2013, 14:08 GMT

Umpiring needs to be sorted out, The bowlers are allowed to bowl two bouncers now, no one tells them to move out of the batsmans way when they are running now the umpires want the Batsmen to stay in one place on the crease, so they can decide how to give a wide. If a bowler with an action like Malinga is allowed where his hand comes infront of the umpires face we should paint the umpire black because we need a sight screen. But nothing has been changed, so if a batsman wants to move in his crease that is his style the bowler must bowl anywhere it is legal or him to bowl regardless of where the batsman is standing as long as he is in the crease and on the pitch.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | December 22, 2013, 13:41 GMT

poor from maqsood. he got carried away and too many shots. just got 2 sixes from same over then why do you need it. played too many dot balls in start and then trying to hit everything. not good for long run

hafeez is still not able to accelerate. may be after 100.

  • POSTED BY Domestica on | December 22, 2013, 13:35 GMT

Thisara Perera again and again but not enough performance by him,he is good for T20s not for ODIs and Tests,

  • POSTED BY Durfitaymoo on | December 22, 2013, 13:33 GMT

Everyone Blames Misbah for slow run rate, are thry blind, Hafeez takes an awfully long time to settle and gets others run out, 1st ODI if Maqsood stayed for 5 more overs score could have been alot higher. Misbah is consistent thats a good thing unlike Hafeez, However Hafeez is consistent in getting others run out.

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 13:29 GMT

Well we dont like hafeez because he is not consistent enough. this is the 2nd time he has scored 1000+ runs and taken 20 wickets. In 2010 and again this year. I think only Kallis and sanath have done it?

Only if he is more consistent , he would have been a more valuable player. This year his dicline is mostly because of Steyn and playing too much with SA. :)

  • POSTED BY roook on | December 22, 2013, 13:28 GMT

Misbah should bat only when we are 50/5 else he should avoid batting. Professor is bad judger of signals maqsood now well set ahmed. Srilanka plays with 6 allrounders 300 less would be too easy.

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 13:08 GMT

i think hafeez has a Unique record. involved in most number of run outs. and he gets to a century as well . oh the irony

  • POSTED BY Vikum72 on | December 22, 2013, 13:06 GMT

Looks like SL will be chasing another 300+ score. How wise it to decide to ball first based on the probability of dew later on? Shouldn't Methews be concentrating of the strengths of his team rather than on predicting weather?

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 13:05 GMT

3rd game and a run out involving hafeez.

  • POSTED BY android_user on | December 22, 2013, 12:46 GMT

@so called icc expert plz check hafeez avg in last 3 years as he was avg 20 till 2010

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 12:39 GMT

OK they both were slow. But i think they have taken more than enough balls now so they have to make big and also have to accelerate now. Too many dots in start. new batsman will take some balls to settle so hopefully these 2 can accelerate at right time. Ahmed has little bit made up for his slow start but hafeez so far behind.

  • POSTED BY on | December 22, 2013, 12:13 GMT

Both Century makers in previous matches are on the crease . hope they don't stumble in middle overs. one has to carry this start. it's a 300+ wicket if they bat properly.

  • POSTED BY ICCexpert.... on | December 22, 2013, 12:12 GMT

s there another player in world cricket at one down position that has a whopping ODI average of 29.00 ? Hafeez is one of a kind!"

Atleast we do not have Gul & Tavir together. But I dont expect this to be much different. Gul will get hammered.

Pakistan's bowling figures In the last 2 years:

    JUNAID K: 29 ODI'S, 55 wickets, Avg - 21.69, Eco - 5.04.

    M.IRFAN : 25 ODI'S, 39 wickets, Avg - 25, Eco - 4.57.

Why doesnt Misbah send Sohaib at 3 when we lose Sharjeel early, its not rocket science that Hafeez is not a power play player. He wastes the powerplay. So much favourtism in the team.

  • POSTED BY ICCexpert.... on | December 22, 2013, 11:52 GMT

Shahzad is only good for BPL and Hafeez for Carribean league. Not international class

  • POSTED BY espncricinfomobile on | December 22, 2013, 11:52 GMT

  • POSTED BY ICCexpert.... on | December 22, 2013, 11:48 GMT

too many dot balls, how blind is the coach and the captain not telling Hafeez and Shahzad to be more aggressive. Its not rocket science. they dont know how to use the powerplay, if Sharjeel goes early there is no one to go against the bowlers, why does Hafeez come inside powerplay. Both of them will score 50 runs of 90-95 balls and secure there place for the next match, this is how they play. We need to replace them with some aggressive players like Sohaib and Sharjeel.

  • POSTED BY wapuser on | December 22, 2013, 11:46 GMT

We lost the second ODI mainly due to the bad bowling changes made by Musbah. It was atrocious but hats off to SL for securing the victory. Misbah should not have held back junaid after he had taken a wicket. Bhatti gave away too many ones and twos. Again SL deserve credit for running between wickets and Matthews played a captains knock. Well done SL and much to ponder, Misbah.

Anwar misses out for Gul. He is coming back from 9 months break. Will not be easy on this kind of wicket. Finally Sohail is out.

Look at the shine on the pitch. Pak is confident of their batting batsmen to produce such batting wickets. whereas vs SA , the wickets were more towards spin.

Little bit dew might be a factor. and also SL bats deep. and 10 of them can bat well and hit well. So have make some extra runs.
