Sri Lanka tour of United Arab Emirates, 1st Test: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi, Dec 31, 2013 - Jan 4, 2014
Played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi (neutral venue)
31 December 2013, 1,2,3,4 January 2014 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100

The Sri Lankan openers, Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne take their place in the middle, with the Pakistani fielders assembling themselves into position.

DaveR: "I think Sri Lanka's team selection is fair. Only worry is that the fast bowlers hasn't got enough fire power... Jayasuriya has done a fair job since taking over."

Frank: "thank god there's no thirimanne, arguably the least talented batsman on the international circuit"

Waruna: "Sri Lanka is opting to play with four genuine wicket keepers.. Is this ever happened before..."

9.54am Have an interesting factoid for you folks, courtesy of Fernando: Both Sri Lanka and Pakistan have six players who have played less than 15 Tests. For Sri Lanka it is Karunaratne, Silva, Chandimal, Eranga, Lakmal and Senanayake, while for Pakistan it is Manzoor, Shehzad, Akmal, Bhatti, Rahat, Junaid

Zuhair Abbasi: "How can we even think of playing in UAE without Rehman? Pakistan will chase leather big time here. You read it here first."

mazahir: "Why Azhar ali is dropped..???He should give more chances to prove his class!!!!!"

Umair: "Why Bilawal again and again ??? We have seen him he is not a wicket taking bowler, so why he is selected in test????"

9.40am Looks like Thirimanne will be out due to an ankle injury he had sustained, while Sachithra Senanayake makes his debut in whites.

Yasir Ishaq: "Pakistani management should give chance to Umer Akmal in test matches he is capable of make big runs."

Taha Noor: "I struggle to understand how Pakistan cannot locate a "genuine" wicket keeper who can bat decently as a top order batsman? Surely we can find someone if we look around the domestic circuit? This is the key matter affecting the balance of our line-up."

Amjad: "Good to see the Battle between Ajmal and Mahela"

9.35am: Ahmed Shehzad has been handed a Test cap, as a reward for his excellent performances throughout the recently concluded ODI series. The talented Osman Samiuddin says the pitch looks a grassy deck, so expect the seamers to have some fun early on. Some more team changes to report as, along with Shehzad, Bilawal Bhatti is also to debut today. Mohammad Hafeez, who really couldn't be dropped after the stellar performances in the ODIs, has been selected in place of Azhar Ali, whose batting form has been rather woeful of late.

Pakistan have won the toss and have chosen to field

9.30am Just moments from the toss now. Will update you with that shortly. Touching on Harisk' comment, here's a piece about why Chandimal, and Thirimanne, need to step up and be counted if they are to justify their place in the team. What do you guys think? Have they been given enough rope to prove themselves or do they need more chances?

Harisk: "I still feel Chandimal does not have the calibre for test cricket. He is yet to prove himself. If he doesnt, I say SL should say goodbye to him.

jilani: "Misbah is getting cool as he is getting old. I wish Misbah can play until 50 years of his age!"

Yasser: "Same as every year resolutions, rule the world !!!""

Syed: "Pakistan should play Ahmed Shezhad as an opener along with shan masood"

9.25am: So we arrive at the last day of what has certainly been an eventful year in the cricketing world. Anyone want to share their New Years' resolutions? Or perhaps what you would like to see from your favourite teams or players over the next year?

Umar Farooq: "I wonder whats gonna happen with the openers. 4 openers in the squad. Whether Hafeez is going to bat at no. 3? If he does whether Azhar Ali will play? If he plays, at which position will he bat? I think we'll just have to wait for the answers."

Syed: "I am quite excited to see Hafeez bat. He has regained his form in the odi's, let's see if he can perform in test with the bat as well"

Azeem: "Any update on what the pitch/ ground conditions are like. If they lean towards pace Pakistan could opt for three seamers with Hafeez as second spinner to Ajmal"

Ali Mushaf: "The match starting on Dec 31 will be counted in 2013 or in 2014. Can we wish them for new year?"

9.20am: As Andrew Fernando has put so eloquently, the appetizers have been dished up, the entrees eaten, and now it's time for the main course. Who will triumph in this three-Test series? Many people would be hedging their bets on Pakistan, especially after securing a 3-2 ODI result, but don't be too quick to dismiss Sri Lanka as two old warriors in Mahela Jayawardene and Rangana Herath make their return.

The Sri Lankans will walk off the field pleased with that first morning, with the lone casualty being Dimuth Karunaratne. The experience which Sangakkara bestows will bode well for Silva as he looks to capitalise on his promising start. The Pakistan bowlers have bowled well in patches, but need to tighten up and get their lines more consistent. Ajmal too will be relied on heavily as the day wears on.

They have taken out a big one here as Mahela looks to head off, before he is called back by the umpire to check for the no ball. Unbelievably, Bhatti has overstepped, so Mahela gets a life, something Pakistan will not want to repeat again

28.2

Bilawal Bhatti to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, would you believe it! I don't think I have ever seen this before! Bhatti gets his man the very next ball as Mahela, looking to defend this one, gets an outside edge which carries to the keeper. Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, clipped off the pads down to square leg

39.2

Junaid Khan to Senanayake, OUT, Junaid gets four as Senanayake's stay at the wicket is not to be long. Bowls this on back of a length just outside off as Senanayake goes for a shot, with the ball catching the outside edge and down to the keeper, who has simply been in top form, pouncing on the chance. Sri Lanka now seven down and in danger of being routed for quite a low total. Mathews continues to hold out, but for how much longer we will have to see..

In comes Rangana Herath at No.9

Herath is out for a golden duck, and Pakistan are over the moon with how things have shaped up this session for them
