Pakistan v Sri Lanka Test Series - 2nd Test

Pakistan v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 9 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.55 am Just about five minutes to go for the first ball of this crucial Test, the Sri Lanka team is in a huddle a little way past the boundary rope, while the physio tends to one of the players. Out come the Pakistan openers, Ahmed Shehzad and Khurram Manzoor. Suranga Lakmal to start things off. Three slips, a gully and a short leg in place.

Nadim: "Pakistan still playing only 4 specialist bowlers, hoping that Hafeez will chip in as a part-timer. The strategy isn't too bad since Pakistan batting is a given weak link. I was only hoping for Khurram Manzoor to be replaced as an opener. Might not be a bad ploy to open with Hafeez and include both Asad and Azhar to bat lower down the order."

9.45 am The debate over the toss continues and we have confirmation that both teams have chosen to go in with the lone spinner. Funny, because Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, had thought this pitch might turn

Andy: "I duuno what to think about the toss decision of SL. This pitch was supposed to get turn and batting in the 4th innings will be tough. But with the recent rain the pitch might have some life in the first day. So better us bowl than the superior Pak pace bowlers. Still going with Pradeep rather than the faster left armer Vishwa is puzzling. Though I say this, even Pakistan went in with 3 pacers and one spinner so possible that they aren't expecting that much turn as well."

"Rahat Ali againnn... Seriously??" And Ali's exasperation stems from the fact that Rahat went wicketless throughout the first Test.

9.30 am Sri Lanka have won the toss and have decided to bowl. The obvious change for Pakistan has been the inclusion of Sarfraz Ahmed in place of the injured Adnan Akmal. For Sri Lanka, right-arm seamer Nuwan Pradeep makes a comeback after a year-long hiatus

farhan khan: "so interesting decision by srilanka of bowling they are keeping in view pakistan's last 1st innings performance at dubai 99 all out......the decision may back fire if pakistan make 300 in 1st innings......remember no steyn with srilanka....."

"Bad call SL. Should've batted first", Dilesha kicks things off and Indunil agrees, "SL made the first mistake??.... bowl first = bat last .. wasn't there anyone to say that to Mathews..." In retaliation, this is Jinath: "bowl Well first = bat once"

farhan khan: "if track responds positively to spinners than pakistan must be aware of rangana herath threat"

Suleman: "I have a bad feeling about playing two specialist spinners Rehman and Ajmal, if they both didn't produced wickets, then Junaid and Billawal can't handle the attack on their own..!!"

9.25 am Close contests seem to be the par between these two teams and the first Test did not disappoint, a bit of ebb and a bit of flow but the game had unfortunately petered out to a draw. That eventuality seems rather remote this time around as Dubai has produced a result four out of five times. For more on that, do read through Andrew Fernando's preview

Zeeshan Khalid: "Pakistan should play Abdur Rehman. Both Ajmal and Abdur Rehman would be useful on these kind of slow spinning tracks quite similar to Pakistan."

9.20 am Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the second Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka from Dubai.

0.1

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 139 kph, a little bit of movement off the pitch there but the batsman does well as he pulls away from the intended defensive prod

0.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, more help for the seamer, this time he gets a bit of bounce to complement the away movement and Manzoor is beaten this time

0.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, dabs it behind point as he beats the cordon and rushes off for the single. Shortish length enabled him to go back and guide the ball away

0.4

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 132 kph, back of a length outside off, Shehzad watchfully lets it through

0.5

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, pulls his bat inside the line of this fullish length ball which pitches on middle and off and seams away at 132 kph

0.6

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 134 kph, back of a length on off stump as he knocks it away into the covers after standing up tall

End of over 1 (1 run) Pakistan 1/0
Ahmed Shehzad    0* (3b)      RAS Lakmal    1-0-1-0
Khurram Manzoor    1* (3b)

Shaminda Eranga charges in from the other end

1.1

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, pitches it full, but this was a little too outside off to interest the batsman

1.2

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, 4 leg byes, strays down leg as this one takes the thigh pad is what the ball strikes on its way past the diving keeper and off to the fine leg boundary

1.3

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, Good length on middle and off as the batsman covers his stumps on the back foot and blocks it. Bit of away movement there as well

1.4

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, full and speared through onto the pads as he clips it away behind square on the leg side

1.5

Eranga to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, pulls his bat away from the good length ball outside off stump at 134 kph,

1.6

Eranga to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, he did get the middle of the bat, but his forward movement was nowhere near solid. In fact, it moves after the full length ball is pushed into the covers

End of over 2 (5 runs) Pakistan 6/0
Ahmed Shehzad    0* (5b)      RMS Eranga    1-0-1-0
Khurram Manzoor    2* (7b)      RAS Lakmal    1-0-1-0

2.1

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, 133 kph, gorgeous. Lots of intent from Manzoor as he launches this one through the covers, but that was by no means a bad ball. It was full length and seaming away as well. Could easily have mistimed that, especially considering it came off nearly the top of the bat

2.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 133 kph, lovely line again from Lakmal as he plugs away just outside off stump. Manzoor allows this through

2.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, moves back and pushes the ball down towards mid-on with soft hands and they scurry through for a single

2.4

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 136 kph, Shehzad watches it pitch on a good length outside off and he presents a confident leave

2.5

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, more shape for Lakmal but this 131 kph full length ball is just a little too far outside off. Left alone

2.6

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 131 kph, good finish there as he gets a bit of carry through to the keeper after hitting back of a length outside off. No shot offered again

Indunil: "I think sri lankan bowlers show their inexperience with bowling too short and two wide to start with. If i can remember correctly, Manzoor was very uncomfortable with the pitched up ball last match"

End of over 3 (5 runs) Pakistan 11/0
Ahmed Shehzad    0* (8b)      RAS Lakmal    2-0-6-0
Khurram Manzoor    7* (10b 1x4)      RMS Eranga    1-0-1-0

Eranda: "Really Sri Lanka???? Picking Nuwan Pradeep on a spin friendly track? He hasn't delivered even on favourable tracks! I think they've got the teams suited for two grounds mixed up."

3.1

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 137 kph, drags the ball back in this time and Manzoor had to hurry into a back foot punch into the covers

3.2

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, 2 runs, 138 kph, he was stuck on the crease while negotiating with this fullish delivery which gains a little late movement away from the bat. A defensive prod results in an outside edge through the slips

3.3

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, poor follow up from Eranga as he sprays this down leg and the batsman can't take advantage either missing his flick shot and the ball dribbles off his pad to the keeper

3.4

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, clipped off the front foot to mid-on as this was full and moving in at him

3.5

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, gets in line behind this 138 kph length ball as he blocks it down to mid-off and practices the same shot vigorously

3.6

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, lovely shot, that. The bowler overpitches and he takes full toll with a strong forward stride and a straight bat. Mid-on is too wide to cut across and the ball runs all along the ground and reaches the ropes

End of over 4 (6 runs) Pakistan 17/0
Khurram Manzoor    13* (16b 2x4)      RMS Eranga    2-0-7-0
Ahmed Shehzad    0* (8b)      RAS Lakmal    2-0-6-0

4.1

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 133 kph, the test of patience continues at the other end as Lakmal keeps it full and outside off. Shehzad holds firm

4.2

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, 1 run, flashes at a full length ball, wide enough to be left but Shehzad goes for it. He was walking into the shot even as the outside edge was taken and the resulting edge has been dropped by the captain Angelo Mathews

4.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, nudged down towards mid-on off the front foot

4.4

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, 2 runs, little bit of room outside off and Manzoor is happy to lean into a forceful cover drive despite the ball being not quite so full

4.5

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, length ball on middle, safely defended

4.6

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 134 kph, he's taken his stance well outside the crease and on top of that, he seems to make a concerted effort to move forward as he drives this full length ball to mid-off

Mobishah57: "Khurram Manzoor is playing well and Ahmad Shahzad is very quiet so far. A good partnership will boost the morale of Paki team."

End of over 5 (3 runs) Pakistan 20/0

Nuwan Pradeep has been tossed the ball now. He will have three slips, a gully and a short leg as well

5.1

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, back of a length, with a little bit of nibble in at the batsman who tries to work it away towards square leg, but he doesn't connect as the ball lobs over to the short leg fielder

5.2

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, another length ball moving in at him to tuck him up. He tries to dab it away through square leg, but he can't get bat to this one either

5.3

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 139 kph, back of a length just outside off stump but the batsman has mistakenly assumed he could cut this. Makes the adjustment though and hurriedly pushes into the covers

5.4

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, stays behind the line of this back of a length ball on off stump at 137 kph

5.5

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 137 kph, good length ball outside off stump, safely left alone

5.6

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, 2 runs, this time he moves across to his off stump to ensure he can tuck away this back of a length ball off behind square leg

krithi: "There are 11 wicket keepers playing today in two matches !!! WI-3 , NZ- 2 , PAK - 2 and SL - 4 !!! charles,Ramdin,walton,mac,ronchi,younis,sarfraz,jaya,sanga,silva and chandi!!" Younis was a keeper?

End of over 6 (2 runs) Pakistan 22/0
Ahmed Shehzad    3* (16b)      N Pradeep    1-0-2-0
Khurram Manzoor    15* (20b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    3-0-9-0

6.1

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, squares him up with movement off the pitch as the outside edge wanders away towards gully. It was a good length ball which nips away just before reaching the batsman, which mucks up his shot

6.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, entices him outside off stump and Manzoor, as he has been doing all morning, gets onto his front foot and unleashes a strong cover drive on the up.

6.3

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, fullish and outside off and Shehzad also keeps to his gameplan of leaving those at all costs

6.4

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, more movement away from the bat but it had started a bit too far outside off to interest Shehzad

6.5

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, a little change up from the bowler as he goes wide of the crease and pushes this full length ball on off stump and the little nibble away from the bat gets the outside edge again which goes to gully

6.6

Lakmal to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, oh, beaten outside off. That time his patience runs out as he doesn't indulge in too much footwork and pokes at a back of a length ball moving away from him. Very close call

End of over 7 (1 run) Pakistan 23/0
Ahmed Shehzad    3* (20b)      RAS Lakmal    4-0-10-0
Khurram Manzoor    16* (22b 2x4)      N Pradeep    1-0-2-0

7.1

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, stays back to the length ball on off stump and dabs it away into the covers for a quick single

7.2

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, 1 leg bye, he doesn't pick up the in swing from Pradeep here. Possibly beaten for pace as well as he gets stuck on the back foot. Half-hearted flick shot is missed and the ball runs off the thigh pad to pick up a single

7.3

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, 3 runs, while Manzoor meets the flick in front of his pads and gets it through midwicket for three runs. Got some good bat on that

7.4

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 136 kph, fullish on off stump as he drives into the covers

7.5

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 136 kph, too good and Shehzad's uneasiness is shown so starkly. Angles the ball in and gets it to shape away after pitching and the tentative poke at it looks quite awful

7.6

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, back of a length outside off again and this time he plays inside the line to leave it

krithi: "Din't expect your memories to be too short!!! Younis kept last match!!!" That was a stop-gap measure. Can't really count that, can you?

End of over 8 (5 runs) Pakistan 28/0
Ahmed Shehzad    3* (24b)      N Pradeep    2-0-6-0
Khurram Manzoor    20* (24b 2x4)      RAS Lakmal    4-0-10-0

8.1

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, gets in line with the length ball on the stumps and defends well

8.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, in swing proves a little more of a challenge for Manzoor as the ball zips off the pitch and strikes him on the body as he was going for a flick

8.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, full on off stump as he moves forward and blocks it back to the bowler. Covered the late away movement rather well there

8.4

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, nudged into midwicket as this was back of a length on middle

8.5

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, one-handed dive from Herath at mid-on prevents this one from running off to the boundary and his team-mates have a little laugh with him as they come over to congratulate his surprising athleticism. It was a good shot too, Manzoor moved confidently forward and punched the full length ball towards mid-on

8.6

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, nice forward stride again as the ball makes a good sound off the bat as he defends

mobishah57: "And 7 Captains (all formats) playing in this match, Younis, Misbah, Hafeez, Sanga, Jaya, Chandi & Angelo, did I miss any?" The lot from the WI-NZ game, I think

End of over 9 (maiden) Pakistan 28/0

9.1

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 140kph, fullish ball on off stump as he blocks into the covers

9.2

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, 140 kph, back of a length on off stump, with just enough shape away to enlist the outside edge. Shoddy footwork again from Shehzad as he poked at it, but the ball falls short of Mathews at third slip

9.3

Pradeep to Ahmed Shehzad, OUT, full, straight and swinging steeply in and combine that with Shehzad's lack of footwork and Pradeep has the first wicket. He offers a lazy drive on the up but the ball had already swung well enough to miss the front pad and ram into the back one. As plumb as any the umpires would have to make in this game

Ahmed Shehzad lbw b Pradeep 3 (41m 27b 0x4 0x6) SR: 11.11

Mohammad Hafeez walks out and has a good, long look at the pitch

Sam: "Beautiful blue empty stands!!"

9.4

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, 133 kph, he snares the edge again! And it just about carried. Oh and wait up, Mahela is clutching a finger on his left hand and is walking off the field. It has to be put down as a drop but the ball was dipping down on him as he dived to his left to hold on, but the ball ricochets off his finger

9.5

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, works it off his hips as this was back of a length on middle at 138 kph

9.6

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, gets back behind the shortish ball and defends to end the over

Wajid Jawaid: "Younis played a number of ODIs few years back as a specialist 'keeper. That was Pakistan's strategy to be able to play an extra batsman or bowler. Whether that qualifies him to be considered a 'keeper or not is another debate though."

End of over 10 (2 runs) Pakistan 30/1

10.1

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 137 kph, the search for inswing makes him push the ball down the leg side, so far that the batsman cannot reach with his flick

10.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, more uncertainty, this time from the set Manzoor as he looks to poke at one outside off stump but then decides to leave it and in the end the ball thuds onto bat and runs off to the slips

10.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, 2 runs, covers his stumps as the length ball on middle is whipped away behind square leg

short mid-on in place

10.4

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 135 kph, full length ball punched back to the bowler who does well to prevent it from going past him. Solid stride forward from Manzoor again

10.5

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, and he comes into picture straight away as the full length ball is driven down the ground and the right hand of the silly mid-on fielder prevents it from going for runs

10.6

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, fullish on off stump at 129 kph, as he defends with his head right over the ball

Tharanga: "OMG: suddenly Nuwan Pradeeps Bowling average has gone to 120.25. What happen if he takes the next wicket??"

End of over 11 (2 runs) Pakistan 32/1

Waseem Bukhari: "Even if Shehzad's dismissal was plumb, still I am surprized to see that a Pakistan batsman has got out LBW and has not asked for review. May be Shehzad and Khurram had forgotten that they have the reviews. :)"

11.1

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, has to his bottom hand off the handle as he moves forward the defend the good length ball on off stump. Possible extra bounce? Pradeep has been quite sharp this morning

11.2

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 137 kph, loads of movement in, he's been generating that more often than not and this defeats Hafeez's flick and he might well have a bruise just below his stomach where the ball had hit him

11.3

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 134 kph, beats him with the other one this time as he pitches on a good length and draws Hafeez into a push outside off stump. Beaten comprehensively

11.4

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 139 kph, gets forward and judges it to be far enough outside off to leave it, close call in the end because the ball jagged back in quite a bit

11.5

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 137 kph, just back of a good length outside off as he moves across and defends

Jayawardene has gone to the hospital say the commentators

11.6

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, lets it through to the keeper as this one rises after pitching just outside off stump

Sumzy: "Nuwan Pradeep was an unlucky lad. He never got the opportunity that someone like Lakmal received. This is his opportunity to perform and showcase his talent. He is a far better bowler than Lakmal and Eranga as he generates some real speed."

12.1

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, lots of excitement from the bowler and the slips as Eranga invests in a full-length inswinger which raps him on the pads. Umpire S Ravi judges it not out, but Sri Lanka have challenged his decision. The ball strikes the back pad, but it was just a touch too high and HawkEye shows it to be missing the stumps

12.2

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 135 kph, good length ball which shapes away late to square up the batsman, but he does well to block it away

12.3

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 137 kph, Lovely shape away and Manzoor is wary of it as he leaves the good length ball outside off stump

12.4

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, angles it in on middle as Manzoor pushes it to the right of silly mid-on and they rush through for a single

12.5

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, safely left alone as this 137 kph good length ball is outside off

12.6

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, ventures fuller on off stump and Hafeez looked rather good on the eye as he leaned forward into a checked off drive

Umair: "Hafeez's footwork will be tested on this pitch...Pakistan must not loose another one before lunch..feet forward boys!"

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, seeks the blockhole with this one but Manzoor is up to it as he negotiates the touch of inward movement by ensuring his feet dont come in the way and drives to mid-on

13.2

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 138 kph, length ball pushed in on middle and leg, but Manzoor was going at it a little too hard as he falls away onto off stump and he misses

13.3

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 135 kph, opens the face of the bat as this one is on a good length and moves away from the bat

13.4

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, giant stride forward and outside off stump and nudges the full length ball outside off down the pitch.

13.5

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, goes for the short one, but his radar is not right. Manzoor goes for the hook, but the ball was too far down leg

13.6

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, length ball on off stump, which straightens a touch as the batsman adjusts, softens his hands and defends

That shall be drinks. Meantime, more news on Mahela: He has a split webbing on the little finger of his left hand and is getting stitches

Laxman Subramanian: "The quality of slip catching amongst Asian teams off late has been pathetic. Indians dropped key catches in SA. SL dropped a few this series, so did Pakistan. We are going to struggle abroad if we dont improve quality of slip catching."

14.1

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, ventures forward to block the length ball on off stump. Not quite the most confident shot, but he's still early in his innings

14.2

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 128 kph, this is a lot fuller which allows Hafeez to lean into a drive to extra cover

14.3

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 137 kph, was swift to note this length ball outside off stump and pushes his bat above his shoulder

14.4

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a little closer to off stump as this is on a good length at 134 kph, left alone again

14.5

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, strides forward, but this full length ball, just a touch outside off, gets a bit of shape away to take the outside half of the bat and go to point

14.6

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, maiden to start off after drinks as Hafeez hoists his bat well over his head having seen this length ball to be outside off

End of over 15 (maiden) Pakistan 33/1

15.1

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, 3 runs, that's a poor ball and Manzoor has dealt with it appropriately. Rocked on the back foot having seen it short and having a bit of width. The cut seemed powerful but the ball had pulled up just inside the boundary to keep it to three

15.2

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, short again, but this time Hafeez prefers to pull the ball to mid-on and checks his stroke almost half-way int othe shot as he softens his hands and concentrates on keeping it down

15.3

Pradeep to Mohammad Hafeez, 3 runs, full on middle stump that time and Hafeez has no problems clipping it away through midwicket for another three

15.4

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, fullish and outside off, easily left alone

15.5

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, he's been very fluent with his drives this morning and this is from the top draw as well. Good straight bat comes down on the full length ball on off stump and he times it well enough for another exquisite on-driven boundary

15.6

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, just back of a length outside off as he leaves this be, but is struck on the top flap of the pad. Loud appeal from Pradeep, but this would have been missing off stump

Niroshan: "Don't know whether non Sri Lankan fans know about Nuwan Pradeep's history where he was not a school level or club level cricketer but who emerged as a softball player couple of years back in a tournament organized by a TV cooperation. He was given the chance because of his speed."

16.2

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run

16.3

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, full and swinging on on his pads and Hafeez pulls out a neat clip through midwicket. Crisp-sounding shot and there was enough timing to take it to the ropes

16.4

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 137 kph, back of a length just outside off stump and the batsman leaves it

16.5

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, lazy waft outside off stump, especially considering he has two short covers waiting for the mis-hit. Full and inviting the drive, Hafeez obliges and is lucky not to get an outside edge

16.6

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, far more tighter as he keeps bat close to pad while coming forward and defending the full length ball on off stump to mid-on

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, back foot into the covers as this is on a good length outside off

Aha, it seems the umpires are checking on the shape of the ball here. Those two rings are out and it seems we might be looking at a ball change. Yep, the spare set of balls come onto the field and Eranga is given a different cherry

18.2

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 140.9 kph, digs it into the middle of the pitch, outside off, and Manzoor has to sway out of the line of it. Good ploy against someone who's so eager to get on the front foot

18.3

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, 140.3 kph, that had much better direction as the bouncer was homing on on his chin. Manzoor does well with his hook shot and kept it down too to pick up a single

18.5

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 140.9 kph, cautiously left alone as he sees this good length ball seam away outside off

18.6

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, 135 kph, lovely delivery but Hafeez will not be lured in to playing at this full length ball just begging to be driven through the covers. He must have been wary about the late away swing.

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 137 kph, oh, mix-up, mix-up! But both batsmen have enough time to reach their respective creases as the fielder at gully can't make a clean pick up and point has to come around to help. Both Hafeez and Manzoor were almost i nthe middle of the pitch before they thought twice about the single

19.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, fullish ball swinging away outside off and Manzoor goes for a brash drive on the up and misses completely. Went at it too hard, I think

19.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 137 kph, much better as he refrains from playing at the full length ball outside off

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, fullish, seaming away after pitching outside off. Easy leave for the batsman

19.5

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 134 kph, good movement away from the bat and the batsman is happy to leave this length ball outside off go through to the keeper

20.5

Eranga to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, 143 kph, he wasn't quite in control of that pull shot and the ball was in the air for quite a bit, but square leg as in the deep. Hit very high on the bat and was done in for pace, quick, short good bouncer from Eranga

20.6

Eranga to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 136 kph, corker from Eranga as Hafeez is left groping. Fullish length and angled in at the batsman, who seemed to have it covered as he moved forward to drive, but the ball straightened quite late and beats him comprehensively

24.6

Herath to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, much fuller on middle as Manzoor reaches forward and blocks

12.00 pm And that shall be lunch. Quite an evenly matched first session to a Test match. Khurram Manzoor has displayed good intent and was very clearly looking to go on the front foot as much as possible. Sri Lanka bulked their seam-bowling department and all three pacers have been quite disciplined and rather sharp in pace too. There were a couple of chances that went down and Mahela Jayawardene injured his little finger during one of those. Pakistan lost an early wicket, but they've done well after that and would look to build on this foundation. But Sri Lanka will know they aren't quite as adept in the first innings in Dubai and would be looking for more inroads. Do join us in about half-an-hour for the second session's play

Hasni: "@Zohaib. how many test playing countries will have a number 3 averaging 34 built on the low and slow subcontinental tracks!"

Zohaib: "Pakistani fans consider it cool to criticize Hafeez. He was second highest ODI run scorer of previous year with most centuries. He has one of the best bowling economy. He has played decently in first test and this test so far. He could have thrown away his wicket but he stayed patient. What else do you want from a #3 batsman."

12.40 pm So out come the Sri Lanka fielders, closely followed by the two Pakistan batsmen. It will be Nuwan Pradeep to kick things off after the break. Two slips and a gully

12.30 pm Hmm.. almost on the dot. I'm getting better at this half-an-hour prediction. The post-lunch session is about 10 minutes away though, so just enough time to indulge in a little discussion. Who did you think won that first session?

Zeeshan: "Test Cricket of 70s won that."

Omar: "I would say both team would be happy so far, the next session would be important one as Pakistan will try to get more runs and if SL can take wickets then it will put pressure on Pak as they don't have runs on the board"

Mudassir Hashmi: "Sri Lankan bowlers have won the first session, they have got their spots right and this will help them as the innings proceed."

Muhammad Iqbal: "Considering the fact SL asked Pakistan to bat in sub-continent pitch, Pakistan with 57-1 won the first session."

25.1

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 134 kph, too wide outside off stump to draw the batsman into a stroke. Sri Lanka have been a little generous in that regard, allowing the batsmen to leave too many

25.2

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, 135kph, short ball and he gets room outside off to slap it to the right of point. Powerful strike as he gets on top of the bounce and flays it away

25.3

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, edged and that goes through the slip cordon, around where third slip would have been. Good, full length ball, only a touch outside off which had drawn him into the shot. He was pushing at it with hard hands and is lucky to have evaded the two existing slips

34.2

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, 135 kph, Lakmal is all smiles as he sees the batsman having to adjust at the last moment to use soft hands after being squared up by the full, straightening delivery. The outside edge falls short of second slip

34.3

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, full and moving just a touch away as Manzoor comes forward and blocks

34.4

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, 139kph, that time the ball was in his arc and he flays a square drive to the right of point. Kept it all along the ground and imbued enough power on it for it to race away to the boundary

34.5

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, digs it into the middle of the pitch, but the direction was down leg and Manzoor is happy to duck under

34.6

Lakmal to Khurram Manzoor, no run, fullish and straightening again, but Manzoor does loads better to cover for it and blocked it solidly.

Upul Chandana: "" More news on Mahela Jayawardene, it seems he will bat because the injury is on his left hand " Well if it is his left hand, then it is his top hand , which is usually the one that guides and powers the follow through. How bad it is will decide his effectiveness with the bat :(" But on impact, it is the bottom hand that needs to be more solid.

38.1

Eranga to Younis Khan, OUT, he's been doing that a couple of times but was lucky enough to get some runs off those. Not this time. It was length, it was well wide of off stump. But Younis goes chasing after it and edges through to the keeper, who dives to his right and picks up a smart catch with both hands. Oh, but wait, amid all the celebrations the umpires want to check the no-ball. All is good though and Eranga has a wicket

39.2

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, length ball, with a little bit of shape away outside off, and the batsman is careful with his leave

39.3

Pradeep to Khurram Manzoor, no run, first up he was jagging the ball ball in, now he's getting it to straighten and Manzoor has to soften the grip on his bat and open the face to guide this ball down before it goes to the slip cordon
