Dimuth Karunaratne takes guard, Junaid has the new ball in his hand.

Shajee: "It is real treat to watch bowling Ajmal and A Rehman on spinning tracks with DRS on. They always kept umpires busy."

The umpires are walking out to what looks just like a Sharjah ODI pitch. Shiny and hard - none of the grass that we saw in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

9.50 am Both teams have bolstered the spin department and there is a bit of excitement around Mohammad Talha as a promising fast bowler. This first session should be rather interesting to watch.

Fahad Nepali: "So good changes made the Pakistani team. They have their job on their hands now, to bowl them out for less than 200 to have a chance to square the series. It will nice to see how Talha does here"

Praveen: "Good choice to bring in dilruwan given that pradeep slowed down after a couple of days plus he has played a lot of first class cricket and can even bat a bit."

Asanga : "Sri Lankan batsman's to be sure that they post a competitive total in the 1st innings to get the advantage of winning the toss."

9.40 am With the pitch said to suit batting on the first few days, Sri Lanka would be looking to bat long and bat big. The openers have looked quite solid in this series so far and will look to continue their run.

Maqbool: "@ Hamza : This is a Test match and batting 4th against spin expected is the toughest to survive .SL has advantage"

hamza: "Thank God, we did not won the toss and are not batting.Bowling has been our strenght for years now and I love Pakistan bowling first because I hope that our bowling will not let us down as our batting does."

9.30 am Sri Lanka have won the toss and have elected to bat. Pakistan have made three changes, most of them along expected lines as Abdur Rehman, Azhar Ali and Mohammad Talha make their way into the XI. So Mohammad Hafeez and Rahat Ali have been dropped while Bilawal Bhatti's hamstring niggle has ruled him out. Sri Lanka have opted for one change, Dilruwan Perera makes his Test debut as Nuwan Pradeep sits out.

Daniel Alexander: "Sri Lanka have won a HUGE toss"

Umar Farooq: "I think Azhar Ali deserves a chance here. In the recent times, he has been the dependable batsmen for Pakistan. Considering, the form slump of Hafeez, Shahzad and Shafiq he should be given a chance. Not to forget Azhar's ability to occupy the crease from one end." Don't think he's our Umar

9.20 am From Sri Lanka's perspective, this Test series has been nothing short of eye-opening. They've found two solid opening batsmen, a pace attack that heartened many of its fans with their accuracy and persistence and the coming of age players like Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal.

"I dont know why have the feeling that Sangakkara will score 200" He certainly is due, Waqar Hussain. Only one fifty so far and he has scored at least one century in the past six series against Pakistan. For more such nuggets, flick through the preview by Umar Farooq

Bushra: "Pakistan should bring back shan masood to partner manzoor.Masood did exceedingly well against the Saffers!"

"Abdur Rehman has to be the happiest traveller. He goes all around the world. He knows he wont play unless Ajmal is injured or its a dead rubber..He is what Stuart MacGill was for the Aussie's.Warne's understudy!" Rest assured, Bushra, this is no dead rubber

9.15 am As it sometimes tends to happen, a disappointing home series shifts the limelight to the pitches being used. Saeed Ajmal has called for more help for the spinners in Sharjah. His captain, Misbah-ul-Haq though has called for his side to show better steel.

"Pakistan should need to bat first as per pitch condition," says Ahmad Ali, well aware of Sharjah's early inclination towards the batsmen, "And also add one more spinner in the playing 11 to attack or Sri Lankan batsman." Looks like he knows the pitch tends to turn as the match goes on as well.

9.05 am How things change in the course of a series. Sri Lanka were the underdogs since arriving on UAE shores and the one-day series did nothing to remedy that perception. But going into this final Test of the series, the visitors hold all the cards and it is Pakistan who will have to make all the plays. What will happen over these five days of undoubtedly hard fought Test cricket?

Mohammad Talha to Silva, FOUR, Talha's radar is all over the place here. Short, wide, lifted over gully to the vacant third man boundary.

Three slips, a gully and short leg in place

1.5

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, much better from Talha. Length ball on off stump, angling in and straightening slightly. Silva hasn't got his feet going yet either, but defends that one

1.6

Mohammad Talha to Silva, 1 run, full and on off stump, defended towards cover but far enough away from the fielder to take a run

End of over 2 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 5/0

    • FDM Karunaratne 0 (6b)
    • Mohammad Talha 1-0-5-0

Daniel Alexander: "Pakistan will have to deal with junior KS (Kaushal) before running in the monster KS (Sangakkara)"

2.1

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, length ball angled across Silva. He gets a good stride in and defends. Batsmen think about a run but don't go for it

2.2

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, length on the stumps again. Silva defends solidly

2.3

Junaid Khan to Silva, 2 runs, full on off stump, Silva steps forward and drives through the covers, but doesn't time it too well. Gets two as Misbah reels it in

2.5

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, short ball outside off, gets up to about chest high for Silva (no short jokes please), and he sways out of the way

Fawad: "Pakistan need some immediate wickets. Otherwise I am looking for a total over 400. Need some real aggression from Pakistan fast bowlers."

3.1

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, no run, length on off stump, Dimuth defends solidly

3.2

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, no run, 140 kph, has remedied his line with this being on a good length on off stump. Karunaratne is safely behind it

3.3

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, 1 run, pushed into the covers as Karunaratne stays in his crease to negotiate a back of a length ball on off stump

3.4

Mohammad Talha to Silva, 2 runs, beaten for pace here as Silva goes for a pull. The short ball had arrived a touch sooner than he expected and he mistimes it completely. The ball goes in the air over midwicket, but lands safely

3.5

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, 141 kph, limited footwork from Silva as this one was on a good length just outside off stump. Touch of shape away beats the poke

3.6

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, pushes forward to defend the fullish delivery on and around off stump

End of over 4 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 10/0

    • JK Silva 9 (15b 1x4)

Bin Hanif: "Misbah should try Ajmal or rehman in first 6 overs like mathews did in dubai bringing Herath early."

4.1

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, that didn't bounce too much but Karunaratne doesn't have to worry about it too much considering this was on a length outside off stump

4.2

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, steady probing outside off again from Junaid as this was a 135 kph length ball. Karunaratne doesn't bother with it

4.3

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 137 kph, not full enough to draw him forward as Karunaratne is safely behind the length ball on off stump

4.4

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 136 kph, curls back in after pitching on a good length. Nothing alarming though as Junaid directed it outside off and the batsman is happy to leave

4.5

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, 1 run, 135 kph, another short ball. Weren't too many of those in the last Test and looks like the seamers have done a bit of homework. Karunarate pulls it square, but he did not look convincing.

4.6

Junaid Khan to Silva, 1 run, allows the shortish ball to come to him and he nudges it behind square leg for an easy singe. Very soft hands from Silva

Nuwas: "Still no monsters on the pitch to see, Kausahal looks so compact as usual. seems SL did the right choice by batting first."

Andrew has pointed out that it is journalist Qamar Ahmed's 400th Test today. Congratulations to the veteran

5.1

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, good shot and even better fielding. Lovely Test cricket as Silva guides this back of a length ball outside off stump towards point, who dived full length to his left to ensure no runs were scored

5.2

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, fullish and outside off, Silva will not bite

5.3

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, 139 kph, ventures even fuller and this time he's bang on off stump. Silva is rock-solid in defence. Hint of away swing there too

There is a deep square leg lying in wait for the hook, so more short balls are on the radar here

5.4

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, back of a length outside off stump, Silva leaves off the back foot

5.5

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, 144 kph, that had some heat on it! Talha digs it hard into the middle of the wicket and the keeper had to leap as high as he could and stuck out a hand to collect the ball quite well. Sharp bouncer from Talha and equally well evaded by Silva

5.6

Mohammad Talha to Silva, 1 run, quick single taken without much fuss. Silva nudges it towards midwicket with delicate hands and rushes through. His partner responds immediately

End of over 6 (1 run) Sri Lanka 13/0

    • JK Silva 11 (22b 1x4)
    • FDM Karunaratne 2 (14b)
    • Mohammad Talha 3-0-9-0
    • Junaid Khan 3-1-4-0

thusi: "@Nuwas: Never say that, you know what happened to PAK in the last match. Only one wicket fell during the first session. It all happened after the lunch. Need to check what they had for lunch on that day to repeat the same."

6.1

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, 132 kph, lovely line from Junaid again as he keeps it fullish on off stump. Silva comes forward with a dead bat

6.2

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, very careful is Silva again as he lets this length ball come to him before meeting it right under his eyes

6.3

Junaid Khan to Silva, 1 run, goes into the pull again as Junaid goes for a short one on middle and leg. Silva was waiting for it though and strikes the ball through midwicket for a single

6.4

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, solid strike as Karunaratne pushes his weight back and punches the shortish ball into the covers off the back foot

6.5

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, 1 run, the outfield seems to be carrying a bit of dew as Khurram Manzoor slips during his attempt to field the ball at deep square leg. Short ball from Junaid but it's dispatched with an authoritative pull shot

6.6

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, 134 kph, dug in again but this one was over off stump so Silva ducks under it

End of over 7 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 15/0

    • JK Silva 12 (26b 1x4)

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, no run, short ball pushed across him which Karunaratne is happy to to let this go through to the keeper

7.4

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, no run, 137kph, this time he put his back into it and the ball flies over the ducking batsman and through to the keeper who had to jump as high as he could again. Loads of carry for the quick

7.5

Mohammad Talha to Karunaratne, 1 run, follows it up with a fullish one on the stumps as Karunaratne shuffles towards the off side and clips it away to long leg. He's rather adept at picking runs on the leg side

7.6

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, 143kph, forced to take his bottom hand off the bat as this shortish ball on and around off stump is pushed down into the ground to the gully fielder

hamza: "Excellent start for Talha ,he is bowling at 90mph that is great to watch."

End of over 8 (1 run) Sri Lanka 16/0

Arunram: "Can someone pass this to pak bowlers please? ask them to bowl cross seamed little fuller deliveries, I am damn sure it will give them the wicket"

8.1

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 138kph, angled in at the batsman who goes back and flicks it off to square leg

8.2

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, he looks equally good through the covers, negotiating this length ball outside off stump with a back foot punch

8.3

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 134kph, gets closer to the stumps with this length ball and Karunaratne pushes it back to the bowler

8.4

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, he seems to be pushing him back in his crease. This was back of a length on off stump and Karunaratne uses hard hands to push the ball to mid-on

8.5

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, fullish and just outside off, Karunaratne was just a little reluctant to transfer his weight forward. Defended into the off side nonetheless

8.6

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, appreciably more footwork there as he leans forward to defend the fullish ball on off stump

suranga: "dimuth has a big chance to hold his position and need a century."

Bin Hanif: "40 odd minutes has completed and misbah is still bowling with 2 bowlers giving them time to settle there." He's head you, mate. Saeed Ajmal is on with slip and short leg

9.1

Saeed Ajmal to Silva, no run, tossed up on off stump, Silva leans forward and defends to point with soft hands

9.2

Saeed Ajmal to Silva, no run, touch quicker and flatter too, but Silva is confidently forward in defense

Silly point added now

    • JK Silva 13 (31b 1x4)

    • Junaid Khan 5-2-6-0
10.1

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, bouncer on middle to kick off the over, but the batsman is not interested

Only the lone slip and gully now

10.2

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, shortish and pushed down the leg side as Karunaratne allows it through to the keeper

10.3

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 135 kph, short again, but sees a bit of room to put enough strength into a pull shot, but he finds square leg

10.4

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, another pull shot but he can't beat square leg again. Short ball outside off again from Junaid

10.5

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, SIX, top edge, but it has enough on it to clear the ropes at long leg. This was right on the stumps and was following the batsman as well. Looked quite awkward going for the pull and gets lucky

10.6

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, 132 kph, excellent bouncer from Junaid again. Sharp pace on it as well as the batsman had taken his eyes off the ball while he was going to pull again. The ball lobs in the air towards mid-on

End of over 11 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 24/0

    • FDM Karunaratne 11 (35b 1x6)

11.4

Saeed Ajmal to Silva, no run, flighted on and around off stump as Silva dead bats it

11.5

Saeed Ajmal to Silva, no run, he's varying his pace and length wonderfully well. Silva prefers to play this off the back foot even as Ajmal keeps it full on off stump

11.6

Saeed Ajmal to Silva, 1 run, on the back foot again but he has his head right over the ball. Solidly defended

End of over 12 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 27/0

    • JK Silva 16 (37b 1x4)
    • FDM Karunaratne 11 (35b 1x6)

Junaid goes around the wicket

Enoch Mahesh Silva: "It's Silva normally solid defensive while Karunaratne attacks, but today it's topsy-turvy. RR is around 2.00. Hope things will be exciting in the session after the lunch."

12.1

Junaid Khan to Silva, 1 run, 133 kph, lovely little flick behind square leg for an easy single. It was on a length and he worked the angle so nicely

12.2

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, 2 runs, 133 kph, nicely timed from Karunaratne as he takes the ball from off stump and places it wide of the man at mid-on to pick up a couple of runs.

12.3

Junaid Khan to Karunaratne, no run, dug in short outside off stump, but Karunaratne pulls his wrists back and sways out of the way

12.4

12.6

Junaid Khan to Silva, no run, length ball on off stump, Silva moves forward to defend it solidly and that will usher drinks onto the field

Shane Mendis: "Solid start by Sri Lankans.. keep up the good work.. Be patient.."

Dr.Tam: "Last time SL won an away series was in 2000. Even with Vaas,Murali and Mahela playing for them in the early part of the decade, they were not able to achieve it. This is a golden opportunity for this young SL side." Actually the've beaten Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in the middle.

Aamir Gadit: "Is the pitch turning?" It's the first morning, might have to wait a little more

13.1

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, speared in on middle and leg and it stayed a touch low as well. It slid along with the arm and Karunaratne was on the back foot, trying to whip the ball across the line. Umpire Ravi thinks it would go down leg, but Pakistan have asked for the review. There is no bat involved and HawEye says the ball would be clipping less than half of the leg stump, so Umpire's call stands

13.2

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, very similar deliver but this time Karunaratne moves back and across and flicks the ball behind square leg

13.3

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, tossed up outside off stump as he stretches forward to defend

13.4

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, loud appeal from Ajmal as he strikes Karunaratne on the pads again. It was the doosra again, but Karunaratne is struggling to pick it. Strikes him on the knee-roll but there might have been an inside edge. The keeper though was busy with the appeal, even if the ball had struck him on the hand and he had enough time to catch the rebound

13.5

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, pushed through on the stumps as Karunaratne gets his bat down in time

13.6

Saeed Ajmal to Karunaratne, no run, flighted just outside off stump and he goes forward to block it

14.4

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, 137 kph, fullish and curls in a touch after pitching, Silva is content to let it through

14.5

Mohammad Talha to Silva, no run, fullish and outside off again, Silva won't be tempted

14.6

Mohammad Talha to Silva, OUT, very, very late decision but umpire Kettleborough has given him. Silva nicks off and he has to walk back. Another excellent delivery from Talha as he pitches it just back of a length outside off stump. It straightens a touch even as Silva was pushing away from his body. The outside edge results and it's an easy pouch for the keeper
