Hammy Love was a useful wicketkeeper-batsman whose Test ambitions were dashed by the fact he played in the same era as Bert Oldfield. His one appearance - it turned out to be his final first-class appearance in Australia - came when Oldfield was ruled out of the fourth Bodyline Test after being felled by Harold Larwood at Adelaide in 1932-33.

His early career was thwarted by World War One - he served with the AIF in England - and although he was picked for the AIF side he had to return home before the series started for family reasons. He made 91 on his debut for New South Wales but moved in 1922-23 to Victoria where he thought his chances of playing would be greater. While he scored well with the bat, hitting five hundreds, his keeping opportunities were restricted by Jack Ellis. He returned to NSW in 1927-28 and for the next six seasons was Oldfield's deputy. He toured India with Jack Ryder's side in 1935-36.
