I'd have picked Imran Nazir for World T20 - Bari

Wasim Bari, Pakistan's interim chairman of selectors, has said the batsman Imran Nazir would have been an automatic choice for the ICC World Twenty20 in England had he been a selector at the time the squad was being picked. Nazir joined the Pakistan exodus from the rebel ICL to make himself available for national selection - his ICL team-mate Abdul Razzaq got the nod - but missed out.

"If I'd had anything to do with the selection of the T20 squad then I'd have picked Imran Nazir," Bari told Pakpassion.net. "The first five overs of a T20 game are crucial and Imran is an explosive player who could give us a much needed boost at the start of the innings. Not to forget that he's a brilliant fielder and really lifts the team with his efforts."

Nazir had a very successful stint with the Lahore Badshahs in the ICL with his explosive batting setting up his team's title win last year. Bari said Nazir - who failed to make the Test squad for the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka - would be considered for the limited-over games.

"He was cleared on Tuesday over the discipline issue in the RBS Cup. That means that he is now in contention for selection in the ODIs and T20s vs Sri Lanka."

Asked why opener Nasir Jamshed was ignored, Bari said it was due to his fitness and not form. "Nasir has missed the last two tours he was selected for. He pulled a hamstring against Australia and was out with malaria against the West Indies (both in the UAE)," Bari said. "He needs to work hard on his overall fitness but he's still young and there's a lot of cricket to be played in the coming months. Nasir is still in the reckoning and his chance will come again. I saw his innings against India and he looks like a very good batsman."

Bari added that the allrounder Fawad Alam would also have to wait his turn to break into a packed middle order, though his skills and abilities to succeed in all three formats are not in doubt.

"All we can do is select Fawad Alam in the squad. How he is utilised in games and where he features in the team gameplan is a decision for the coach and the captain to make. His batting position is their decision and it's easy for us to forget that they also have to accommodate Yousuf, Younis, Malik, Kamran, Afridi, Misbah and now Razzaq.

"Fawad's time will come, sooner or later he will get the opportunity to bat higher up in the order. He's a very popular guy, the best fielder in the team, a very good runner between the wickets and a thinking cricketer who plays proper cricket shots."

Bari said even domestic giants like Saeed Bin Nasir would find it difficult to break into the middle order. Nasir, 29, was included in the Test squad against Bangladesh in 2003-04 but failed to get a game. He has scored over 6000 first-class runs and maintained 40-plus averages in the four-day and one-day matches. Bari disagreed that a strong domestic record would guarantee success at the international level.

"It also depends on who those runs were scored against. Most of the matches in our domestic cricket aren't of a very high standard, some are but on the whole the standard is quite poor. I'm not saying that Saeed isn't a good player. I've seen him bat and he is a very good player who's very consistent at domestic level."

Bari said he wasn't very keen on taking on a full-time role. The selector, who took over following Abdul Qadir's resignation earlier this month served two previous terms as chairman of selectors and was the PCB's director of human resources immediately before his latest appointment.

"At the moment I already have another job with the PCB and I've told them that they should look for a permanent selection committee to take over as soon as possible. I've done the job a couple of times before and I've done it for longer than anyone else. I'm not keen on taking it up again. As far as I know I'm only selecting the squad for Sri Lanka, so hopefully the new committee will be appointed before the next tour."

My friend Munir64 made me an indian in no time, I have been a die hard Pakistani, Punjabi and a Pakistani cricket fan who does appreciate class players and their unique talents all around the world. I my fellow friends have seen the RBS final and the disgusting gestures extended towards our respected Umpire, a mouth full of Punjabi swearings that he unloaded onto the big screen in the ground where whole nation watched and was ashamed. Commentators like Haroon Rashid and Aamir Sohail were forced to say that a brilliant batsman of Imran Nazir's callibre must not continue from here on unless a disciplinary action is taken. Well it turned out that disciplinary action was taken but it was as bogus as the administration itself. No player is bigger than the game, when they go out to represent our country they are supposed to bring honour and integriy and not shame. There should be very stiff penalties for all the players violating discipline. No exceptions.

thanks to PCB, because they are now taking some excellent decision for pak. it is highly needed to bring some explosive like imran nazir who can make a explosive start from the beginning. i hope imran will play in ODI series against sl. another things that is abdur rauf is a very impressive bowler, but don't you think so that if razzq would be played in place of rauf then pak would get an all-rounder.

I think "amerube" is some indian guy who doesn't want Imran Nazir in Pakistani squad. Ignore "amerube" please. Sorry to say that but your comments are very rude. Thanks

Finally, PCB is taking some good decisions for Pak cricket. I'm really glad to see abdul razzak back in action and now bringing imran Nazir back in t20 and odi's will boost pakistan batting, I request PCB to bring back mohamed asif because he is an outstanding bowler and should be given a chance like everyone else. I think this is the perfect time for Pak team and pcb to be united and be the # 1 team in the world.

Imran Nazir is a very talented T20 opener, and on his day he can take any attack apart, there is no doubt about that, and i'm sure he will get his chance. As regards to T20 World Cup, and not having Imran Nazir in the team, then i would not be that bitter about it, because had Imran Khan had Waqar Younis and Saeed Anwar fit, then i'm 100% sure they would have played the 1992 World Cup in Australia, but the result might have not been the same !! There is certainly a lot of cricket about, and the beauty is that one might have not made his mark in Test cricket, but may have set the world alight in T20, so now with the three formats,(Test,50 overs and T20) everyones a winner, and I'm 1000% sure Pakistan cricket will not only widen, but will take its cricket to the next level, if not any higher. This victory has really helped and made a very stong statement to the International cricketing nations. Pakistan are clearly the team to beat, this is the message to the World. Pakistan Zidabad

Well now that Razaq and Imran are back, I hope they realize the Pakistan cap isn't for granted. They were dull and uninspiring before their exit two years ago and I, for one, was thankful Razaq was out. I hold the lad no grudges but he was so plainly out of steam at that point, and Imran simply wasn't backing himself to play for Pakistan, so its good to see they are around now and the way Razaq celebrated his wickets in the T20 cup, it was good to see he had the fire back.

I agree with MAK123, Imran Nazir should not be allowed to play for atleast 6 months, he brought dishounour to the fine game of cricket in the final of RBS. I think he didn't even deserve to be man of the match just due to his disgraceful act after he was justfully given out. It was pathetic to hear him say at the ceremony that he was upset because he was wongfully given out by the umpire. How long will we see the arrogance in our players, players are not bigger than the game itself. After all we won the T20 World Cup without Imran, Asif and Shoaib and we can do it again, it's all magic of the team work not play of one individual. As a matter of fact, I would like to see Imran Farhat selected for the tour of SL, he has become a fine stroke player and more reliable since ICL.
