Fast bowler Umar Gul has said that Pakistan are desperate to beat India in the upcoming Champions Trophy fixture. Pakistan are grouped with Australia, West Indies and India, and the two teams face off on September 26 in Centurion.
"While every match will be important, the game against India, as always, will be special for both the sides," Gul said. "No rivalry can match the India-Pakistan rivalry and I think the match will be something billions of people all over the world will be waiting for.
"For us, the match is also important for the simple fact that we haven't beaten them in an ICC event and we're desperate to break that sequence [Pakistan have actually beaten India in the 2004 Champions Trophy]," he said.
Gul said that being World Twenty20 champions adds pressure due to increased fans' expectations.
"Although it is a different format, it is always good to go in as a champion side because it gives you that extra confidence which is vital in big tournaments," he said. "However, our victory in England has raised the bar of expectations and our supporters want us to win everything. That puts us under more pressure."
Pakistan have included the promising Umar Akmal in the squad, and the tournament will also mark the comeback of fast bowler Mohammad Asif. Gul feels the side is well balanced, with the return of experienced ICL players like Mohammad Yousuf and Rana Naved. "I believe we have an excellent team for one-day cricket and it is the combination that makes us a quality side. The return of Mohammad Yousuf and Rana Naved has provided further impetus to the side which is bubbling with confidence after its victory in the ICC World Twenty20 in England in June."
Gul said he was looking forward to leading the bowling attack. "I'm ready to take the spearhead's role and the requirement of that role is to try to come up to expectations whenever the ball is tossed at you," he said.
"There's no greater feeling than to contribute in the success of your side. After the victory in England, the side is hungry for more successes and I'm desperate to contribute more to those successes."

i am not surprised that no one has mentioned the west indies team. however we have a chance of going to the semi's. we have some new talent which many people (even west indians!) dont know much about. i am sure they have been working hard on their game & will need some watching in the group matches
Posted by aditya87 on (August 26 2009, 19:01 PM GMT)well as an Indian fan I can't wait till India v Pakistan -- I hope India wins but the atmosphere will be unbelievable
Posted by Umair_Arif on (August 26 2009, 10:14 AM GMT)well it is good to see the high spirits of umer gul and no doubt u r a good bowler and ofcourse we want u people to deafeat them but i think india s team is more balance and well settle u have to depend on ur unpredicteable factor
Posted by Muneeb_Hashmi on (August 26 2009, 08:17 AM GMT)I don't know why AbdurRazzaq was left out. I suggest they should add him at all cost. When we see the T20 final against SL, the major blow in the bowling deptt. was produced by AbdurRazzaq when he removed Jayasuria and Jayawardena. I still fail to understand why he is left out???
Posted by SIREN6800 on (August 26 2009, 03:27 AM GMT)Here we go..... another blunder by Pakistani selectors..... they ignored Razzaq again.......a match winner. Their memories are very short. Only a few months before they were forced to call him back after their defats from india and england. I am suprised that they did not realize that his key break through against KIWI,S put pakistan on track of victory. Its beyond understanding that Younis Khan preferred Fawad Alam over Razzaq. YOU STILL HAVE TIME CALL HIM BACK HE IS YOUR MATCH WINNER.
Posted by shadymalik on (August 25 2009, 22:24 PM GMT)Fawad Alam is a poor selection. I just looked at all the 5 ODI's and the T20 they played in Sri Lanka and Fawad performance was poor. Razzaq was much better and didn't get a chance to play in about 3 ODI's. He's a handy batsman and a useful bowler.. I don't understand the logic behind Fawad's selection.. This is unfair to Razzaq as he has a lot of cricket left in him. If it's about the age then Younis should be sacked first as he's 2 years older than Razzaq.. And who said Razaaq is not a match winner? how could y'all forget his contribution to Pakistan cricket? whoever says he's not a match winner must be out of his mind. Anyways, I wish Pak team all the best and hope they win the trophy.. it's going to be tough as India and Australia are very tough sides to beat and i pray that they qualify to the semi's.... they have a chance if they make it to the semi's. I hate Asif too.. he should have been in the team.
Posted by Umair_Arif on (August 25 2009, 18:59 PM GMT)well good to see the dedication of umergul and with attack consisting of( asif amir new ball) rana (first change) and gul at ( second change) on south african pitches and condition wont be easy for other teams batsmen but with all this in where will saeed ajmal (the star performer in recent time) will fit.Any how offspin job which will be although few overs on african fast pitches might be perform by malik and offcurse afridi is already there .but the only concern is batting which have the capability no doubt but isn;t performing up to the mark in recent times and just replacing the seniors batsmen with youngesters will not be a very good idea to expose them on fast pitches against strong bowling lines.so the seniors batsmen have to take responsiblity with the batting line consting of 1.imran nazir 2.k akmal 3.younis khan 4. yousaf 5 .misbah/umer akmal 6 sohaib malik 7 shahid afridi 8..rana naveed really we r not expecting the collapse again hope fully seniors do well
Posted by KYZA on (August 25 2009, 13:33 PM GMT)Pakistan are a great team and always have been, it's just Pakistani passion which makes the fans act so emotionally, pakistani players have always had the most natural talent, even Usain Bolt said growing up he admired Pakistani cricketers the most and watched Waqar Younis bowling, what a bowler, West Indies were also the best bowlers in the world. Pakistani players need to take confidence from the loyalty shown by fans and treat every game with respect as they did in the T/20, they played superbly in every game and although they had played hardly no cricket prior to the tornament, they proved how talented they really are. Pakistan can beat India in every game they play them in, and over the years Pakistan have held the upper hand against thier biggest rivals, gifted players and highly under rated. This Pakistan team can produce magic and on paper look strong. Under the right leadership and guidence these players can win the Champions Trophy, when taking the field be positive,
Posted by drearyDin on (August 24 2009, 21:45 PM GMT)I have high hopes for Asif. He was unplayable two years ago, with impeccable control on length.
Posted by zoomjb on (August 24 2009, 20:36 PM GMT)first of all i wana tell ppl stop expecting pakistan to win all matches this is cricket a team has to win and lose. Pakistan team is in a progress of making a new team we have to give them time. pakistan has always been a strong side bcz of its bowing nt batting and d moment we r lacking bowling we had perform well in sri although we lost bcz we had 2 bad session bt over all we played well. amir is a goo bowler bt he is young rana and gul are good as a first change bowler. opening has been a prob, bt at the same tme team has some good options at d moment. i am really happy d way pak team is performing they need sumtime to fine out there best combination so guys plz relax and support. cheers
