Pakistan players barred from Bangladesh club league

Some Pakistan players have been refused permission to play in Bangladesh's Dhaka Premier League by the PCB in order to help concentrate their energies on next month's Test series against England in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"All players who are in contention for selection for the England Test series are barred from playing the league starting in Bangladesh from December 26," Nadeem Sarwar, the PCB media manager, told ESPNcricinfo. "There is a clear message for all top players - including the probables for England series - who were to join the [Bangladesh] event [that they] are barred. The PCB does not want to take a risk on their fitness as Pakistan play a very important series next month."

Sarwar declined to name the players disallowed from playing in the Bangladesh domestic competition. Nine Pakistan players - Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Abdur Rehman, Kamran Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal and Sohail Tanvir - had reportedly been offered contracts by different clubs in the limited-overs league that begins on December 26 in Dhaka.

Pakistan are currently touring Bangladesh and will return home next week before leaving for Dubai on January 9. The first of three tests against England starts on January 17 in Dubai.

There will still be several star players from PAK in this league. There is a rumour one of the teams is bringing in Chris Gayle plus Brian Lara as a coach.

thank god a proffesional decision for a change... now all they need to do is start to get up to speed with support staff..i.e coachs, stregnth and conditioning, viewing competitor weakness (analyst)... im sure there are many people in pakistan who would jump at the chance to do these jobs...

A really good decision by PCB..boy Zaka Ashraf seems to be good for Pakistan cricket..i hope he takes more good decisions in the future too. Pakistan vs England is going to be the clash of titans..the best rated team of 2011 (by win/loss ratio) vs the number one team of the world!!

good decision from Pak, i wish BCCI did the same. Best of luck Pak.

  • on December 19, 2011, 4:26 GMT

good decicision. I think they better start preparing because Eng is taking this very seriously, and we should too.also, i think its better for Pak. players to leave everything else out, put ur head down and just play cricket, we need to earn some respect in the world of criket by beating some good team.

ON ONE HAND IT IS A WISE DECISION BY PCB TO BAND PLAYERS IT IS BETTER IF THIS ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN AFTER 21ST DECEMBER WHEN THE TEAM FOR ENGLAND TOUR BE SELECTED i DONT' SUPPOSED ALL THE PLAYERS WILL BE IN THE PLAYING TEAM

  • Baundele on December 19, 2011, 0:49 GMT

This is a good move by the PCB. It keeps Pakistani players injury free, and so does it for Bangladeshi players (e.g., Hasibul Hossain Shanto vs. Jahur Elahi). This league will see lot of fans, no matter if it involves stars of world cricket or not. Bangladesh cricket fans are the most dedicated ones. It gives more opportunity to the local players to show their abilities. This helps identifying talents for future Bangladesh team as well.

  • thePakistanian on December 18, 2011, 21:47 GMT

I wouldn't say anything about Bangladesh league!! It's good for them!! But extremely good descion by PCB (shockingly Zaka Ashraf is doing some good decisions for Pakistan cricket). I don't think there was any need for players to play in Any Club game after such a busy year & ur just 2+ weeks away from one of the biggest series for Pakistan in recent times! Players should get ample rest & get themselves fresh before a big England series!! Hope everything goes well!!!

  • Afridipak on December 18, 2011, 21:47 GMT

good move by pcb keep it up!

  • Mel-waas on December 18, 2011, 20:15 GMT

But they should let Shoiab Malik play.. He has no place in the Pakistan team anyways

  • maddy20 on December 18, 2011, 19:23 GMT

@siddharth_r2001 Its not about SLPL or anything else. It is about keeping players away from these worthless T20 leagues before big tournaments. How can you forget what our dear BCCI did before the Eng tour? IPL has injured half of our best players and the rest failed miserably barring Dravid!

  • on December 18, 2011, 17:13 GMT

Out of context...I THINK WAHAB RIAZ IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST REVERSE SWINGER OF THE BALL OUT OF MANY TOP BOWLERS, HE PRODUCES THE REVERSE SWING AROUND THE 20TH OVER IN A ONE DAY MATCH, JUST LIKE HOW HE GOT INDIANS FROM HIS BOWLING IN THE WORLD CUP...does anyone agree with me??? I THINK HE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE IN THE TEAM.

  • on December 18, 2011, 16:32 GMT

Good Decision from PCB ,,, Players need rest ..

  • on December 18, 2011, 16:23 GMT

The ICC should take these domestic tournaments seriously. In order to avoid conflict between boards of different nations, the ICC should formulate a rule, under which a player can only represent a single club side, be it his own nation or in a foreign country.

  • r1m2 on December 18, 2011, 15:52 GMT

You hear premiere league and you think IPL???

This is not a T20, this is the Dhaka based LOI league. This is the oldest cricket league of Bangladesh. Before earning test status, this was the only national cricket league in Bangladesh. Some number of foreign players have always played in this league, and Pakistanis always play in this league. While they do get paid to play in the league, you must know that it's really token when compared to any other "premiere league" that you may try to compare it to. It's really a poor man's cricket league. E.g. Steve Tikolo is/was a regular and a legend of this league. This league always generates good money because of the fan following.

  • HocasPocas on December 18, 2011, 15:42 GMT

Well this is Just Club Cricket so Pak player playing or not wont make much difference. Its a good decision from PCB to give Player rest B4 England series. I saw some1 said it wont be like IPL. Well no one trying to make another IPL. Its just club cricket

  • Fyfie on December 18, 2011, 15:41 GMT

@ getsetgopk, why would any of those players want to play in a Bangladesh league? I doubt even money-hungry Gayle would go near that competition (not to mention Warne only came out of retirement as a favour to CA and the game in general in Australia). Good move by the PCB, unfortunate though that politics prevents the best Pakistani players getting a crack at the IPL, so that they have to chase these other tournaments, obviously it won't be changing anytime soon though.

  • siddharth_r2001 on December 18, 2011, 14:28 GMT

@maddy20: what's for the BCCI to watch & learn? BCCI anyways has never allowed their players to participate in any of these "leagues" outside India (remember the SLPL fiasco?). In fact, the PCB has now watched & learnt from the BCCI!!

  • on December 18, 2011, 14:25 GMT

A good move and players should respect this.

  • ibbani on December 18, 2011, 14:10 GMT

This league will be a big flop. Nothing will come anything near to India's IPL. There is good money in IPL.

  • johnny62 on December 18, 2011, 14:07 GMT

Are you kidding? you want to bring military rule into Cricket as well? PCB bent on killing cricket in Pakistan. If there is money in the game, let them earn for their living. This game has become professional sport it in not an armature sport. Cricketers and their families depend on the money generated by the sport like other sports, so what is the problem?. Is the board willing to compensate them fully?

  • ExplicitPlatinum on December 18, 2011, 13:59 GMT

Now the PCB know what they are doing. If there wan't a series against England, then the PCB would allow the Pak players to play in the Bangladesh club league. Players like Azhar, Younis, Hafeez need to play long innings and make double hundreds. Hmm... Wahab Riaz? He should be included in the test squad against England as he will be important if Gul gets hammered.

  • Zahidsaltin on December 18, 2011, 13:47 GMT

Imran Farhat, Sohail Tanveer, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal should be allowed to play in Bangladesh as non of them deserve to be named for England series. Pakistan Should select Afaq Raheem while he is in form. Kaneria and Wahab should be pardoned with a last warning and should be included too. Sarfraz should be selected as test wicketkeeper and Adnan Akmal should play ODIs. they both need to switch places as both are misplaced in wrong teams. Sarfraz can prove to be a better batrsman if given longer version where he can build his innings where as Adnan is more free flowing batsman.

  • maddy20 on December 18, 2011, 13:40 GMT

A very sane decision by PCB. Hope BCCI watches and learns!

  • Murtaza96 on December 18, 2011, 13:39 GMT

Great decision PCB... and anyway these kind of tournament will hardly help pak playrs to improve their t20 skills!

  • getsetgopk on December 18, 2011, 13:28 GMT

Sorry banla but Pakistan has already done more than enough to help out bangladesh and if its hampering their efforts to take on the big fish then no is the call, maybe bangladesh can attract gayle or murali or warne.
