The PCB has asked its centrally-contracted players to undergo a fitness test, before they are considered for a new, year-long central contract. All centrally-contracted players are required to undergo the fitness test, though Umar Akmal, Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal will take the test - being carried out on Monday and Tuesday - on a later date. Hafeez is currently unavailable for the test for personal reasons, Ajmal's just had his third son and Akmal is out of the country.
The contracts, which expired in December, 2011 were due to be reviewed after the England series in February - but it was delayed after a new selection committee headed by Iqbal Qasim was formed.
The PCB has decided to increase pay scales of those awarded the new contracts, given that there have been no increments in the last three-and-a-half years.
The PCB earlier issued six-month contracts to 29 players, spread over four categories. The new committee now aims to issue a year-long contract to each of its players. The committee met last week to discuss the central contracts, but sought more time to make its decision.
Among those likely to make a comeback is Shahid Afridi, the former captain, who had automatically lost his contract in May 2011 when he announced his retirement from international cricket, in protest against the board's decision to replace him as captain of the ODI team.
In the past the board has handed out central contracts to the players based on their performance and fitness, however now they aim to assess the fitness of the players and then gauge their future prospects.

excellent step by pcb the yougsters in the side like Nair Jamshed,Shahzaib are very overweight and poor fielders.pak need to groom those players who are good in the field like A.Shehzad rather than heavyweight Jamsheds etc
Posted by Sports4Youth on (April 10, 2012, 9:57 GMT)I have not seen Afridi ever dropping a catch or misfielding. I don't know why his fitness should be touch & go. After all fitness levels are important to aid good fielding amongst other things. I think in all aspects of the game Shahid is now the next Khan (Imran Khan) of Pakistan cricket. Just like Imran he also has a great fan following all over the world. He is the next icon of pak cricket. I respect and love him more than Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.
Posted by Sports4Youth on (April 10, 2012, 9:45 GMT)@ AndyZaltzmannsHair on (April 09 2012, 15:28 PM GMT) :- i dont know on what basis you raise doubts about Afridi's fitness. Since his debute in 1996 he has consistently been the best fielder in pakistan. Still after so many years he continues to be the best fielder in pakistan. Even if he fails with the bat & ball still he commands a place in he final XI purely on his razor sharp fielding abilities, he is the Johnty Rhodes of Pakistan. I think your comment is highly misplaced.
Posted by Sports4Youth on (April 10, 2012, 9:41 GMT)Good. A step in the right direction of first getting a fitness cerficate to be eligible for central contract. Now they should look the more important issue of first getting a certificate from the feilding coach then they will be eligible for a central contract. After all pakistani boys (not all) are one of the worst fielders in the world. They drop the most catches, mis-fielding, missed-run-outs and misssed stumpings. This is were they loose most of the matches. if they get their fielding right their performace will automatically improve. Now that the big boys have realised the importance of fitness i hope they realise the importance of good levels of fielding.
Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (April 10, 2012, 7:55 GMT)very good step.. there should be no compromise for international cricket team players.. Test team seems fine and i hope they make a sensible selection for one day and t20 teams (especially t20 selection has been bad).
Posted by alonetiger on (April 10, 2012, 7:12 GMT)the arrival of david w,mor is a v good sighn for pakistan cricket and he has a sharp look at every thing.i m sure he will convert this side into a very strong side coz he knows the abililty of every single cricketer in the world..i think he choosed the future captain for pakistan and his name is shoaib malik, coz he is the only player who can play in all three formate of the game and he has the experience of marshaling the troops plus his own performance is always on top and the proof of all of this is the team of sialkot sttalions which he led from the front..shoaib will b a v good choice for next 5 years as captain as he is mature and experienced now and david w mor will surly think about this..
Posted by K.A.K on (April 9, 2012, 16:45 GMT)Increments are a good news and so is focus on fitness. Good job PCB on that. The delay in preparing and signing the contract is not a good news, but hopefully this will improve too.
Posted by AndyZaltzmannsHair on (April 9, 2012, 15:28 GMT)Fitness is paramount. Fitness levels are almost always tied to performance levels. Out of the current crop probably only Afridi would be touch and go. The rest I assume would be fine.
