Sanath Jayasuriya is welcomed on his arrival in Karachi, Karachi, October 18, 2012

A team led by former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya and managed by former West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharan has arrived in Karachi on Thursday afternoon. The international XI team will play two exhibition Twenty20 matches against a Pakistan Stars XI at National Stadium in Karachi this weekend, ending a near four-year drought of international cricket in the country.

Several other players including batsman Ricardo Powell, fast bowlers Jermaine Lawson and Adam Sanford from West Indies, and Andre Nel and Nantie Hayward from South Africa landed earlier in the morning. South Africa allrounder Justin Kemp has withdrawn due to his domestic cricket commitments while two Afghanistan players - Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Shahzad - will reach Karachi tomorrow from Kabul.

"I am happy to be part of these matches," Jayasuriya said on his arrival. "It depends on country to country [whether teams tour Pakistan] but in my opinion Pakistan is a safe country. The incidents of Lahore [attacks on the Sri Lanka team in 2009] were not the best thing to have happened and the suspension of cricket in Pakistan is very unfortunate because the people love the game here."

The games are unofficial and are arranged by the Sindh sports minister Dr Mohammad Ali Shah. The PCB has issued No Objection Certificates to the contracted players due to participate and has allowed the use of the National Stadium, but all the logistic arrangements, broadcasting deals and security arrangements were made by Shah with the support of the local government in Karachi.

Since the terror attack on the Sri Lanka team bus during a Test match in Lahore in March 2009, Pakistan have been forced to hold its international matches away from home and also lost hosting rights of the 2009 Champions Trophy and 2011 World Cup. A move to stage a tournament with international faces might prove a small stepping stone for the revival of international cricket in the country.

Kallicharan was enthusiastic about cricket returning to Pakistan. "I came here way back in 1972 to raise funds for flood victims and this time it's another noble cause: promotion of cricket in Pakistan," he said. "I think they [other countries] will have to have a look. With the success of these matches a good message will go out. Pakistan is a part of world cricket and we are here to show that Pakistan is a place to play cricket."

The plan isn't entirely sanctioned by the PCB and the ICC ,and the organiser was forced to change the name of the teams to remove any association with the two boards as the matches hold no official status.

Powell, who has played 109 ODIs, hoped the series would change perceptions about Pakistan. "Its feel good [to be here in Pakistan]," he said. "Its a great opportunity for the players to come here and really exhibit their skills, I think its about time that world cricket returns to Pakistan.

"Twenty20 is the most exciting form of the game that you have right now and the teams are here to really enjoy themselves. Lots of good players are here, lots of guys from South Africa as well and lots of other players from other parts of the world, and I'm sure it will be a great weekend and we will see some good cricket."

The teams are staying at the Sheraton hotel, with extensive security of around 5000 policemen, claimed the provisional sports minister. The team will have a practice session on Friday at Karachi Gymkhana Ground.

As a Sri Lankan Fan I want International Cricket to Blossom in Pakistan . Lets not forget the Policemen who gave up there lives protecting our Cricketers during the dark days of 2009 . One cannot forget Mr Kaleel for driving our Players to safety. We wish Pakistan Cricket the very best . Pakistan Zindabad !

If this goes successfully then its most likely Bangladesh will be touring Pakistan after the court procedure has finished because Pakistan has allowed a Bangladeshi to be the next ICC Vice and President in the next 3 years but I just hope Pakistan are true to their word on these events going to plan.

Pakistan is indeed a safe country. 195 Million people reside in the vicinity of Pakistan.

Incidents take place in all parts of the world, be it US or South Africa. They're inevitable.

Hopefully this tour of International World 11 will give the world a good message about Pakistan and help in reviving our cricket.

There is no doubt that there are very few nations in the cricketing World where the passion for the game is so high as in Pakistan. Unfortunately it is not the people with this passion for cricket who create problems for the game there. And in a country where there are so many refugees living, it certainly is going to be hard to control misdeeds every now and then. Added security will be a big step, but more than that individual players from all the cricketing countries will have to start believing that it will be safe to play in Pakistan. Tours like this is a good start and lets hope the trend continues.

Sri Lankans are a BRAVE nation, they fought the local insurgency for decades and still kept producing great players like Aravinda, Jayasuriya, Kaluwitharana, Murali, Vaas, Mahela, Sangakara and Malinga...

They know how it feels to have been deprived of international cricket and top teams not ready to visit (like Australia and England didn't visit Sri Lanka in 96 World Cup).

Great to see Cricket starting again in Pakistan and I believe International Cricket is at best when played at Sub-Continent between India-Pakistan-Sri Lanka and Now Bangladesh also proving to be good fighters.

Posted by o-bomb on (October 19, 2012, 10:55 GMT)

Good luck to the organisers for these matches. I hope we can see international cricket being played in Pakistan again.

After this event PPL would be another giant step in bringing international cricket in might not be as successful as IPL,BPL,SLPL in its first run...but the first edition will prove that Pak is a safe country to play cricket and encourage more players to come here....after that(in later editions) we can really think about comparing it with IPL,BPL,SLPL,BBL and other leagues around the world ;). thanks to all the srilankans,wi,s,afghanis, bangladeshis and very few indians for supporting us ).

First of All

Very warm welcome with thanks to all the International players, who are visiting us. That's so nice and brave move by u people, applauses.

Secondly, I urge my government and authorties to put every inch of their efforts to make it a PEACEFUL Event, as any incident (GOD FORBIDS) can put permanent veils over cricket in Pakistan.

Thirdly, I urge to the member nations to trust our government and authorities and send their teams as PAKISTAN is really a safe place apart from few cities where even International stadiums do not exist. Places like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi ARE SAFE

Posted by   on (October 19, 2012, 10:09 GMT)

I as a Pakistani really thank the International players who are making this happen after such a long time. Pakistan is a country where cricket is taken more seriously then their own work/jobs, cricket coming back to the country would be the first of the many good steps to come for this great nation. I hope this would encourage more of the international teams to come back to Pakistan and enjoy our hospitality and the food. I bet all these international players have been missing some serious Pakistani cuisine.

Posted by   on (October 19, 2012, 9:51 GMT)

It's really great to see because people of Pakistan badly waiting for these moment and i would to humble request ICC should also act positively rather then support those who don't want cricket in Pakistan...

As a Sri Lankan, I am happy that our National treasure Sanath Jayasooriya has opted to break the tip of the iceberg. I sincerely hope international cricket resumes/returns to Pakistan. The 2009 incident was as one guy said here, a one off case and it happened at no fault of the Pakistani people or the PCB, it was by a set of people who wanted to harm the good image of Pakistan. We Lankans never isolated Pakistan post 2009 March, we will never. We are with you my Pakistani Brothers and Sisters, and I hope the ICC take this as a stepping stone to assess the situation and give the green light for international cricket matches to be held again in Pakistan. Thanks

I cannot imagine the mindset of the international cricket managing authorities. What happened back in 2009 is an one off incident. Such things happen all over the world. In US many kids are killed in colleges by upset guys. You do not stop attending colleges, do you? Have foreigners shunned Mumbai after the terrorist attack? Examples are many. Where can you find 100% safety at present? Are you going to play cricket in Switzerland, where we very rarely or never hear of such incidents? What I say is that we have taken this too too far. Forget about what happend in 2009, just go on doing the business. Pakistan must take a firm stand and other Asian countries must help Pakistan. Enough is enough and Pakistan is a leading cricketing nation. It can have its international games in other contries like a stateless nation.

A warm welcome to all players, and most importantly. Thank You.

Hope these players return without harm. Karachi is a relatively safe place from many accounts. While this might look like a meaningless fixture, nevertheless, the Pakistani public would cherish cricket played on their soil. A strong Pakistan is vital to world cricket.

It's about time! India should recommend that cricket returns to Pak

Really glad to have a opportunity to see few foreign heros such as Sanath, Andre Nell, Ricardo Powell etc in action, live in my city, which will allow me to get to stadium after work, to witness good games, i'll try to meet Sanath and especialy Andre Nell, i hope Nell's bowling still have a good old typical South African taste! Missed him alot, these games may help reducing thurst of cricket in our grounds for 100 million plus cricket lovers of Pakistan in future.

The last man I would expect is Andre Nel to come to rescuing cricket in Pakistan. I think I was wrong about him while he was active part of SA squad. Thank you, all of you for coming here.

take a bow Sanath Jayasuriya, we, as sri lankans should never forget the favour pakistan did in 1996 by touring SL for their world cup group matches as Windies and Aussies rejected to do so.

Yeah I agree with this great exciting player but safety is very important that's why teams do not tour but I actually hope it goes well these matches. Playing ODI matches against Afghanistan would've been ideal and meaningful.
