The PCB is deliberating whether batsman Mohammad Yousuf and allrounder Shahid Afridi can play in the President's Trophy, a domestic first-class tournament. Both players have expressed a desire to play the tournament, in a bid to work their way back into top form, but were not registered in the teams' probable lists for the tournament.

Afridi, who is struggling for form, is looking to play for Habib Bank Limited to prepare for the limited-overs series against India next month. Yousuf, who hasn't played any cricket since June last year due to personal reasons, was keen to make a comeback to the national team and was asked by the selectors to play domestic cricket first. Port Qasim Authority, one of the domestic teams, was intent on recruiting Yousuf and, on October 30, had applied for him to be registered with them.

However, the deadline for the teams' preliminary probable list was September 24, the board said, and both players were not on those lists. The PCB's cricket committee or the PCB chairman, though, can still provide special permission to ensure their participation.

"We have received applications from both of them," the PCB spokesman, Nadeem Sarwar, told ESPNcricinfo. "The cricket committee has considered their application and will take a decision soon, before the next round [of the President's Trophy] starts."

Yousuf, a veteran of 90 Tests, lamented the delay. "On one hand, the PCB tells me to prove my form and fitness on the domestic circuit, but on the other, they do not allow me to do so," he said. "[In recent domestic tournaments] I have not been representing any team. This time around, Port Qasim Authority offered me a slot that I readily accepted."

Had the PCB sanctioned Yousuf's participation soon after his application was filed, he would have played the tournament from the fifth round onwards. The sixth round is currently underway, and thereafter there are three of nine rounds remaining, apart from the final. Afridi is looking to play the final two rounds of the tournament.

Shahid Afridi should take back his Test retirement if he gets eligible to play domestic cricket. If he doesn't then it might be useless of playing 4 day games.

@Everyone Doing Comments Here - India is having more success just because their couple of batsmen are performing well. Pakistan isn't ACTUALLY called the CHOKERS but there performances show that if they keep this performances then they will be called the CHOKERS sooner or later.

@Infrared. Afridi is same age as Hafeez i.e. 32, and so is Razzaq. Even Tendulker is not considered old, although he is 7 years older than Afridi and started his career at the age of 16 like Afridi.

In response to various Indian fans' comments, first of all Pakistanis are not known as chokers in the cricketing world which includes other cricketing nations and not just India. Secondly I fail to understand some of the comments when a team as been hammered into the ground overseas (2 back-to-back whitewashes against Australia and England!!!!). All your nation seemed to be worried about at the time was Sachin's 100th ton. WRONG FOCUS GUYS. I think Sachin is one of the best batsman the world has ever seen but a team is much bigger than its players. Even if India beats England in the forthcoming test series I think the only way it can salvage some dignity is by winning tests abroad.

Posted by coolitbaby on (November 11, 2012, 19:17 GMT)

@AB-14 Yes, I am sure you have better 'achievements'. A lot of your cricketers managed to come back to Pakistan from their 'home' in England where they were kept for their $$$ misadventures. How many more such achievements are forthcoming in 2013?

Posted by   on (November 11, 2012, 19:00 GMT)

Pakistan`s progress is far better than India`s recently.Ajmal is far better than Ashwin in stats and variations and the fact that batsmen fear him.Its true Pakistan have had quite success in UAE but that isn`t home ground.India`s success is limited to their home ground.I guess Indian fans have forgotten their recent loss from Bangladesh in Asia Cup -which pakistan won btw,and the fact that Pakistan went ahead of them in W-t20.Lets just see the future series and then talk.Try not being pundits on your own because watching a few games does`nt make you one!

Posted by   on (November 11, 2012, 18:22 GMT)

@piyo-thanda Comparing overall statistics of Pakistan and India, I guess anyone would say India has been on mat. The numbers do not lie. Be it ODI's or Tests. The only achievement India has is they've managed to win in World Cups. Once again, the fact is Pakistanis are the current Asian Champs!

Posted by golgoal on (November 11, 2012, 16:47 GMT)

@AB-14 You are coming here making proud claims that your team managed to get into so many quarter and semi finals and managed to choke in them all. LMAO.

Posted by piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on (November 11, 2012, 16:43 GMT)

@AB-14 - Just quoting some random statistics doesn't make your team look good. India walloped your team in world cup, asia cup, and god know what other cups not too long ago. Comparing Jamshed etc. to Sehwag and Gambhir. Both of them were at top of test match ratings not too long ago. Your Jamshed dude will probably be lucky to be a ball boy to Indian batsmen. Use common sense for a change.

Posted by piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on (November 11, 2012, 16:39 GMT)

@El_Toro_Loco - All teams lost matches, and lose them badly. Aussies bowled out for 43 runs in test match in SA recently. But Indian teams knows how to WIN big games like in world cups, unlike your team. Why do you think Pakistani team is known as CHOKERS ??

Posted by TheRisingTeam on (November 11, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

Afridi is an ordinary player getting old now don't really see the point of him playing in this first class considering he doesn't play tests anymore.

Posted by El_Toro_Loco on (November 11, 2012, 13:49 GMT)

@piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda: Never seen in any professional team sport of the world where soon after winning a "world Cup in their own backyard" the same exact team got whopped washed on two consecutive series the moment they stepped outside of their comfort zone, now how bout' this achievement by your team india. Ciao...

Posted by dmqi on (November 11, 2012, 13:02 GMT)

The selectors and PCB did injustice to Yousuff, a world class batsman by not selecting him at good form and did too much favor to Afridi by giving him too many chances even at poor form. I think their time is gone and young players should get their fair share.

Posted by Coolgye on (November 11, 2012, 12:10 GMT)

Every batsmen has to see these types of days which Afridi is seeing in his career. Sachin Tendulkar is seeing these days too. We should start having belief in him because he needs support. CRICKET is a team's sport not a one-man army. Okay he can contribute a lot but don't blame the whole disaster on him. It's good to hear that Afridi is trying to regain his form for the most important series of all. Yousuf on the other hand is a littile too old to play at international level but if he wants to play on the domestic circuit then go ahead let him play and there might be a slim chance that he might get his form and get selected.

Posted by   on (November 11, 2012, 10:16 GMT)

yousuf is a good batsman and he have a good record so for in teset as well as as in odi....pcb should give him a chance

Posted by   on (November 11, 2012, 8:52 GMT)

People talking about afridi's form every people goes through such things in cricket and whats wrong in playing Domestic cricket afridi can play for couple of years more. But yousuf i dont think that his fitness will be at its best and according to the international standards. But let him play he is legend what if he is not a good fielder he can win you games for u in batting so he should also get a chance but only in tests. He is a master without any doubt.

Posted by cooldxve on (November 11, 2012, 7:54 GMT)

I think Yousuf should be given a chance only in Tests, and Afridi should stick with only T20Is.

Both are class Players and deserve to be a given a chance for the sake of Pakistan cricket.

@ piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda: its worth mentioning that bangladesh eliminated your team from Asia Cup. what happened to gul can happen to any fast bowler, Abdul Razzq hit five 4s to Mcgrawth @ perth. Oh u forgot who snatched word T20 from india and who is asian champ?

@ piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda: i think so we have better achievements than u atleast . we have the third best record in test since it started. UMAR AKMAL AND JAMSHED has a better record than sehwag and gambir in recent years coz ur team is getting old .FOR consecutive 3 world t20 cups india has lost in the super eight while pakistan has made 6 semifinal of major tournament in last 5 years . we have a much better record than u since the game has started. and u were no 1 coz of playing in home and when u started playing outside india u were dismentaled by australia and england. we also have a better record than u in odi since it started. so better keep ur mouth shut .

I am a Sri Lankan and a fan of cricket.

While PCB look for young blood, they should allow these two great players to play at least in domestic circuit. It is up to them to perform and make it to the national side. But restricting them playing is not fair.

Over a long period of time Pak has suffered big time due to politics, misunderstandings and various other reasons. I think it is high time that PCB start looking at the bigger picture of Pakistani Cricket and iron out petty differences.

If not these issues Pakistan could have been one of the top sides in world cricket without any doubt. Therefore PCB please let Cricket grow in Pakistan for god's sake!

Posted by   on (November 11, 2012, 2:02 GMT)

well rules should b equal for each and every player if they had desire to play first class cricket then y they did,NT apply to play earlier now Wat s bout those player z who were picked instead of them would u drop them................ i think pakistan should make strong statement hre by not allowing these two to play becoz then it would become a fashion first not picking Ur main player and then to pick him hen needed hence azher mehmood and others can also apply i think this rule should not have any relaxation for these two

Posted by zoman87 on (November 11, 2012, 1:04 GMT)

@piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda : Talk about Achievements, Pakistan has been Arguably the best test team of 2012, And India? Well, 2 White Washes in a span of 18 months, nice! And another elimination from another T20 WC to boot. And where are you getting the idea about Umar Akmal and Jamshed? do you remember the 100 Jamshed scored against India?

Posted by Rajesh_india_1990 on (November 11, 2012, 0:41 GMT)

These two retired from cricket zillion number of times and still playing.its confusing.:...monday they want to retire, tuesday they want to play, wednesday they want to retire, thursday they want to play and their life cycle rotates between retirement and play...lol

Posted by piyo_thanda_jiyo_thanda on (November 11, 2012, 0:30 GMT)

@El_Toro_Loco Yeah, and your pakistani champs are setting the world on fire. Umar Akmal, Jamshed etc. are not capable of scoring runs against women's teams even. Umar Gul forgot cricket after what Sehwag did to him. Indians at least won 2 world cups in 4yrs, and were no. 1 team in test matches for 18+months. What achievements your team has??

Posted by El_Toro_Loco on (November 10, 2012, 23:08 GMT)

@ samincolumbia: Yeah I guess you're right about "without breaking a sweat" part in your comment because there wouldn't be any sweat OR tears left for indians after another repeat whitewash through the hands of English men in up coming weeks. LOL...

Posted by samincolumbia on (November 10, 2012, 19:44 GMT)

So what's the big deal if Afridi's average is 14? He is only 18! Afridi or not, India is going to win the series without breaking a sweat.

Posted by BravoBravo on (November 10, 2012, 19:31 GMT)

Mr. Yousuf must be given every opportunity to play, he is one of the most prolific player PAK have produced. I remember that he is the man who broke Sir Viv Richards record for most runs in a calendar year. This record was held by Sir Viv Richards for almost 29 years.Mr. Ponting came close to breaking this record twice, but it was Mr. Yousuf who did it.

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 19:26 GMT)

Both should be given a chance, afridi has abilities for T20 and yousaf can play one dayers and tests. Let them be in.

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 18:47 GMT)

Pakistan should not allow these old dinosaurs to play for the country but focus on new blood BUT should allow them to mentor them for the future !!

Posted by avmd on (November 10, 2012, 17:24 GMT)

Its a good move for Afridi, who still has a lot of cricket left in him and always been physically fit. Its an utter non-sense for Yusuf to expect making a comeback. He didn't have good physical fitness when he was 30, and now at 38 his playing days are long gone. Yusuf, take a deep breath, life goes on, there is always a life after cricket, try to understand.

just play against india,ya ill be back in form

PCB Should Give them a chance to prove themselves cuz they are gems of ground and pakistan team need them back to form specially in limited over cricket, Our Bating is struggling and bowlers have to do double duty to defend little totals or pcb should find replacement of them surely Hammad Azam is not replacement of Shahid Afridi and Misbah cant take place Muhammad Yousuf at all.

both yousaf and afridi should now retire from international cricket , don't act like tendulkar. let the young players play the game.

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 15:34 GMT)

Yousaf is a premium player had played 90 tests is on the verge of breaking national record of most test runs and quality player to play coming africa test tour but still not given the respect he deserve . And now not allowed to play domestic cricket is extremely sad behaviour of pcb . I don think we played test cricket better this year as a batting unit despite white wash in uae . Yousaf younas and misbah can make real difference in south africa .

Posted by   on (November 10, 2012, 15:24 GMT)

they should be allowed to play!!!
