Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC chief executive, has said the value of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), Pakistan's franchise-based Twenty20 competition, could be in "excess of $100 million". Lorgat, who was involved by the PCB to assist the board in setting up the league, was speaking during a PCB ceremony in Lahore to unveil the logo for the PSL which is scheduled to be launched on March 26 this year.

"People should not underestimate the potential of the Twenty20 league in Pakistan," Lorgat said. "With the rising popularity of T20 cricket, every ICC member country has the right to host its own professional league. Pakistan has done hardwork and I hope with foreign players' participation, perceptions about the country will change. I can see a lot of work has been done in parallel against many odds, but certainly this league will be come into reality shortly."

The PCB announced that each team in the PSL would be allowed to sign a maximum of six overseas players and would include 10 local cricketers plus two emerging players.

The tournament would be played over 15 days between five teams and would involve a total of 23 matches for the first three years. The matches will be played at a single venue, with teams playing each other twice in a league format before the top four teams qualify for semi-finals. The PCB has ambitious plans to expand the league in the fourth year to eight teams and a 59-match tournament.

Although the names of the region/city-based franchises or the list of companies interested in buying these franchises were not revealed, the PCB is hopeful of completing the franchise-auction process and signing a broadcast deal before the end of February.

"A lot of hard work has been put in place to develop the PSL," Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman said. "The objective is to recognise the growth of T20 cricket around the world, encourage our cricketers and give them the exposure to the grass-root talent in the country. It will also provide opportunity to foreign players to compete in Pakistan."

I think its really a tremendous achievement of PCB chairman but lets see how many international cricketers will play in this league bcos IPL also start in April so it mean the big name will not come in PSL.

My best wishes for PSL

Well Conspiracy All Around will gonna demolished when Pakistan Super League starts. It will going to be a biggest Success Inshallah. Wait and Watch Because after every peakness there is a big slump or a downfall. Time will explain all these things. As being a Pakistani i have been waiting for this for along and cant to see this Live Action.

Chairman Zaka Ashraf should be appreciated and congratulated for the hard work what he is doing to bring back International cricket in the Pakistani cities, First he able to arrange limited series with India, and still trying to bring Indian team to play in our home ground, the big giant step which took by announcing the long awaited Pakistan super League which look before only on press and on paper. Hope the money which involved in such a amphibious program will be generated thru big companies who will take the and the International Players will come to play here in Pakistan, hope full-proof security will be given to all officials and players by the Punjab Government as well as by the Central Government.

congratulation to all pakistani nation ...... inshallah we will organize this league successfully and the name of our belove country Pakistan will be glorified and all the haters of pakistan will bite the dust....... inshallah through this league foreign currency will come to our country and many thanks to Mr. Zaka Ashraf by whose hard work the name of our country has prospered !!!!!!

@ Bilal Raza, Haroon Lorgat is helping but I am sure with a hefty pay check. Amazing how thirsty people of Pak are for cricket. Even a remote possibility like Pak Premier excites people. There is hardly a realistic chance that investors will put up big dollars or high profile internationals will be attracted. This league will peter out as a low key domestic affair.

This is how Pakistan will bargain now with Bangladesh, if they agree to send their players for SPL, only then PCB will issue NOC for BPL. I think its a good move but PCB should also try toh keep the teams levelled, not to make some strong and some week.

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 15:34 GMT)

To be fair, can't see Gayle's and Pollards coming in first few years but some players from Afg or Ireland with few Sri Lankan 2nd tier players will do nicely. I am very sure that matches will be held in Lahore which is the most peaceful part of country and fans are huge in numbers. Even if no one from outside comes, watching locals with a touch of glamour will attract a lot of fans. If PCB plans them right, commercial success will be huge. These days, Pakistani fans fill ground watching Multan against Rawalpindi so no worries. All of my works fellows are ready to spend whatever it takes to watch Gul bowling to Afridi or Nasir.

Well done Zaka Ashraf and team ..your efforts have been instrumental in helping revive cricket in Pakistan and surely this seems to be a BIG EVENT.Nice to see Lorgat helping.

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 12:30 GMT)

At last. Security would not be a big problem as all the matches would be played in one city. I congratulate PCB on launching PSL. I think its gonna be a success coz Pak people love cricket especially T20 cricket plus Pak cricket fans have not been able to watch quality cricket in Pak for a long time and i think they will turn up in big numbers to watch it, as we saw in that Pak 11 vs World 11 match, which is going to be a success commercially.

IT's a good step taken by zaka ashraf. This will increase the chances of international cricket returning to pakistan.

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 11:23 GMT)

agree with Syed_imran_abbas and AK47_pk. We produce the best in that business and every one will like to compete here. The only worry is the Law and Order situation in pakistan but PCB is restricting this tournament to one venue to reduce any mishap. So I think it is best for the moment. Go Green Go.

Posted by AK47_pk on (January 11, 2013, 11:20 GMT)

Players from pakistani roots shud be targeted 1st. Kabir ali qadeer ali owais shah saj mahmood , khawaja , imran tahir nd their are lots of others playing in counties. They, ll give positive feed back to their colegues nd int national players will start coming slowly. Pakistan has won one t20 runner up in one nd been in semis twice in wc so clealry we have best talent in this format. A country with such success is bound to take this league to next level. Another good thing is that players wont be auctioned like animals.

Who wants to play against the best in bussiness, who wants to play against the like of Ajmal the majician, seven foot tall irfan at 90 miles/h, Cunny Hafeez, Emerging Raza Hassan, Seaming beaming Junaid Khan, Gulli Guldozar gul, Boom Boom Afridi, Conservative Abdur rehman, Pacy Wahab Riaz, Swiniging Anwar ali, Elegant Nasir jamshed and bashing Umar Akmal.. and alot more to challenge??? Good work by Zaka Ashraf .. Its very very good ... but I think that the matches should be played in different cities sO that the whOle nation could enjoy the league ...

@ AK47_pk -

Ehh ! Comparing to IPL ? It's not even clear that who the overseas players will be and you have already declared that PSL is better than all leagues ? Blind patriotism.

Let the tournament begin... PSL. I will start showing you which league is better ! All the BEST.

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (January 11, 2013, 10:12 GMT)

PSL is gona rock.. trust me pakistan has more talented players than any other country and having only 5 teams very be ideal to have a very tough Super League. I am supporting this.. cant' wait to buy a kit of my favroute team. I hope they revail it soon. PAKISTAN SUPER LEAGUE is going o be best competitive league. I will urge International players who wana learn how to play best spinners and fast bowlers in the world to come and join it.

Posted by AK47_pk on (January 11, 2013, 9:54 GMT)

Watever the circumstances but let me asure u one thing! Quality of cricket is going to be super high cuz we have best t20 talent in our domestic cricket. Hard hitting batsmen, pacy bowlers nd mystry spinners. A real oppertunity for batsmen to come nd enjoy quality bowling nd get handsome money in just 15 days. Ipl? A country cannot produce int level bowlers will not be able to provide u best contest between bat nd ball. Their national bowlers will not make a.cut.in to our club sides so wat kinda thrill ipl can give? Lets not talk about bpl as they are begging pcb to give them stars to make their league succussful. Im eagerly waiting for real contset in t20.

Posted by rehanahmeds on (January 11, 2013, 9:48 GMT)

i'm not sure if we can get some high prolific international players to play in PSL. but i hope (or want to have some hope) that we do and it can help pakistan to show the world that we can host international cricket matches "SIGH". I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 9:32 GMT)

PSL.... Name says everything. It is different from other leagues in Names so it wont be replica atleast. i want to see it fast... my suggestion is to arrange matches in multiple vanues like Lahore, Faisalabad, Karachi and Rawalpindi, Multan in starting phases. atleast 1 match to each vanue should be given as test case. in 1 vanue all matches may not pull crowd as viewers will have options and home teams will get crowd only...

Good Job Zaka. But why is it set clashing with the IPL? Other not selected in IPL will come over and we might not get the desired international stars. Hopefully it becomes a success nevertheless.

There must be a final (no semi finals needed after the round robin)...hating the semi finals idea after a super league...I m against semi final even in IPL

Posted by ozone8237 on (January 11, 2013, 6:21 GMT)

MASHALLAH!!(With the Grace of God) Here is the creation of a League for desparate and die hard fans THE PAKISTAN SUPER LEAGUE (PSL) Its about time. First of all the main distinction of the League is Its Different name and format. I am glad PCB and its current enthsiastic, determined and hardworking Administration didn't follow the leads of IPL, BPL and SLPL but came up with something different. BCCI and BCB boards had been so much politicized in dealing with PCB that they never cared how starved and desparate the Pakistan's innocent people had become and how important it was for the emerging and existing cricket players to get some financially security. Thats what happens when "YOU" push someone to the wall and they have no way of survival then following the " Necessity is the Mother of Invention" phrase; the victimized emerge as victorious. The results are in front of everyone. Good Luck PSL..

ah and there we go.tell you its gonna rock if they provide better security hope we see some gyle and dilshan bashing all over the place.otherwise we have a large amount of good player if we get just 12 international player this tournament will be a good one.yes if they play in two citys then it will be more crowd puller.good luck pcb

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 3:36 GMT)

20 round robin matches to eliminate 1 team, and then wipe the slate clean and play 3 matches knock-out matches to find a winner from the remaining 4??! Yeah... sounds like a plan alright.

Posted by   on (January 11, 2013, 3:33 GMT)

First of all i congratulate to all the people who put this together and bring cricket back to Pakistan, In a bigger picture most Pakistani people are loving and want to enjoy the game we all love, few people who want to spread Spread destruction will do it anywhere they get a change. People loving the game should continue to support it best they can. Given the conditions are it going to be a tough sell.

I do like the idea of Asian Cricket League forming a league together, all countries can have there own league (like football in Europe... & a combined champions league). In general I love the game and makes me happy when it brings us together.

Is see lot of negative comments, to them i wish to say, Come on guys! Pakistan has been going thru a lot of bad things and if someone puts hard work to put things in right direction if you can complement them then at least keep your negative words to yourselves.

All the best PSL...

Posted by basedONfacts on (January 11, 2013, 2:31 GMT)

Yes. i do think that someone who is fan of IPL, should suggest PCB that they should not orgnaize such an event. Because if they will do so, then their Pakistani players would also become the puppet lions. Who can only speak but could not face the fight in real battle field of sports. Ah. IPL, You have got all the talent away from the blue clue team....So, brave players hopefully even if by GOD's will PSL would get started, then atleast dont be overconfident as you have already seen that some players from other countries got the result for this.Important @MaskRider

Tell them human live in pakistan not animals or insects.if anybody don't want to come we should not insist them.our srilankan brothers are with us and we are also human being and we live in pakistan.circumstances are not so bad as media present it.hope international players come and play good cricket

Posted by imranmalik_br on (January 11, 2013, 0:52 GMT)

whatever the country's security situation, money problem, foreign players participating or not.. I can guarantee huge turn outs in terms of crowd because in pakistan people are hungry to watch some proper cricket.. So, there is your commercial success everyone is arguing about. Everything else would follow gradually.. I think there is no motive for competition with IPL or any other league for that matter, the objective is to prepare talented youngsters for higher level with seniors players and international players.. Best Wishes PCB and Pakistan.

Posted by assad786 on (January 11, 2013, 0:14 GMT)

the league is coming at a right time as no international cricket is being played in Pakistan so this league can help bring back international cricket. But the PCB need to make sure that they attract current players from England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand as when players from these countries come and play this can help give a better image of Pakistan to their respected cricket boards and may persuade them in touring. The PCB also needs to make sure that the league has players who are currently playing international cricket such as Brendon Mccullam, chris gayle, swann, jimmy anderson etc the reason why is because there is no use in spending all this money and signing up retired players who are in their late 30's. as each team can sign up to 6 players they should sign up three players from non test playing nations and three from test playing nations so that it can help cricket as a sport to expand besides from helping the players bank balances full.

Posted by   on (January 10, 2013, 23:49 GMT)

Don't know what to think. 'Sounds' good. Will have to wait and see. We couldn't even attract half-decent players to play recently in Karachi for the rest of the world team. I hope PCB can pull it off. Also, if the tournament is in one venue, the majority of fans will be for the team from that city. These leagues ultimately want a mass following for each team. How's that going to be achieved? Lots of unanswered questions. Will have to wait and see... I didn't want to mention all the security concerns etc. It just makes Pakistanis upset and depressed, including myself.

Posted by   on (January 10, 2013, 22:08 GMT)

It all might look attractive on the paper but in the light of ground realities, chances of this tournament's success are extremely low. Law and order situation in the country has actually worsened after 2009 attacks o n Sri Lankan team, hitting the new depths within last 24 hours during which more than 100 people lost their lives through bomb blasts in different parts of the country. No amount of money can cajole a bunch of star players to risk their lives, and even if some try to become adventurous, their boards will not permit it.

Further more, the scheduling too seems ill advised as its almost colliding with general elections for national and provincial assemblies in the country. If (quite a big IF in current situation) they take place, people will be busy in them. If they don't, well, things would be far more chaotic then. This way or that, that wouldn't at all be an ideal time for such an endeavor.

Unfortunately, financiers too are aware of these facts. Anyways, Good Luck PCB

Posted by Munkeymomo on (January 10, 2013, 22:04 GMT)

I love the fact that there is only 1 team knocked out after the group stages. That really earns you a wooden spoon if you finish fifth and everyone else gets to play knockout.

Posted by Ajmal_Chucker on (January 10, 2013, 22:04 GMT)

@kc69: hehehe exactly! most likely some retired players but some Pakistan fans think they will able to get in players from minnow countries maybe Afghanistan :D

Posted by Ajmal_Chucker on (January 10, 2013, 22:02 GMT)

Nah we will continue to underestimate it because in my view it will not go exactly to plan who knows? :)

Posted by SyedAreYouDumb on (January 10, 2013, 22:01 GMT)

100 million dollars in a poor country? Sound like a huge exaggeration!! But i see an obvious flaw, who would play in it? Anyways good luck PCB :)

Posted by   on (January 10, 2013, 21:57 GMT)

Why not combine them all into the South Asia Premier League SAPL?

Posted by Ajmal_Chucker on (January 10, 2013, 21:55 GMT)

No offence Pakistan but no foreign player including from weaker teams will go there. I doubt they even get a NOC from the board, maybe the retired players :)

Posted by Ajmal_Chucker on (January 10, 2013, 21:54 GMT)

@AK47_pk - No thanks lives are more important than learning how to play spin or whatever. There's nothing super about this league still can't match with IPL :P

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (January 10, 2013, 21:42 GMT)

I am really glad to see some limited number of teams in format. That will provide some competitive cricket. This can provide a chance for some of yougsters to show their talent and at the same time its a great oppertunity for some international players to come and learn to play quality spin and fast bowling. I hope some good coaches are hired. and i hope some ex pakistani players like wasim and waqar will find some time for their own country as well. Mr Zaka Ashraf and co is doing good job so far. I am looking forward to it.

Posted by Umar.A on (January 10, 2013, 21:39 GMT)

Although many look down upon T20, one thing it does for cricket is it will potentially minimize match fixing. Players all over the world are banking in on all these leagues, so the temptation to make an extra few bucks may no longer exist. Additionally, Pakistani players typically start with "tape-ball" cricket and evolve with the shorter format before moving to test cricket. This league could potentially take domestic level cricket in Pakistan to another level !

Posted by Stark62 on (January 10, 2013, 21:29 GMT)

I guess Afridi, Hafeez, Misbah and Malik will definitely be leading a side but who could be the other one?

Also, what is the price limitations and who will participate (foreigners)?

Posted by LeftBrain on (January 10, 2013, 21:20 GMT)

I understand the desire to cash in this crazy phenomenon called T2o cricket, and the positives it od=ffers to upcoming cricketers who may not be able to secure a financial strenght without such a league. What I dont want to happen to Pakistan cricket is to fall in a similar hole Indian cricket has fell. T20 craziness gave India a whole lot of below average cricketers, super high egos, utter brainless administrators and even crazier media. Not the results you want/expect/foresee from such a league.............. If I had any powers, I would have stay away from such a drama league.

Posted by QingdaoXI on (January 10, 2013, 21:20 GMT)

Rest In Peace Test Cricket in Asia, with IPL India gone, with SLPL Sri Lanka gone, with BPL Bangladesh will never rise in this upteem format and now PSL from Pakistan will aid to total finish of Test cricket in Asia. Pakistan performed well in test cricket in last one year, only becuase the players were kept away from such tournaments, but by introduction of PSL, players will get more money and you know what happen next? However, if it is gonna happen, than Idea of playing with 5 teams and having semi final is weird, it should be only Final between top 2 teams to make it interesting.

Posted by AK47_pk on (January 10, 2013, 21:09 GMT)

U want to learn how to play spin nd fast bowling? Come play in pak league cuz pakistan has worlds best fast nd spin bowlers. Our domestic fast bowlers are way better than india srilanka bangladesh. Its really an oppertunity for batsmen to horn their skills.

wow look at the pakistani boyz' excitement! I have heard so many things from the pakistani's about how IPL is a waste, not needed. they are happy without it, they are so happy they don't have T20 league and just on and on! And now utter hypocrisy! Still, good luck with your league and hope you do great so you guys can finally shut up!!

lol..one more subcontinental league.Who will play in Pakistan?

Posted by shahzaibq on (January 10, 2013, 21:00 GMT)

Five teams? And then have semi-finals too? How about two games against each team, and then a best of three finals? Because after the first 10 games or so, the bottom team might already be irrelevant, and with all the matches being played at one venue, teams won't even be playing for home advantage in the knockouts. And I've always thought that one full member board with a T20 league should step up and put a condition on teams to have at least one associate or affiliate player in each team. So 1 affiliate player, 2 under-23 locals, 7 Foreign Full Member players, and 12 locals should constitute a squad. No more than 4 foreign players, and at least 1 under-23 local per playing XI.

I dont like the format. With only five teams playing each other twice and than semi finals and final. So in first 20 matches only one team will knockout. Only semi finals and final will decide the fate of the tournament. First 20 matches with be really boring :-(

1.Karachi Super Stars 2.Faislabad Rangers 3.Lahore Warriors 4.Federal Vipers (Combined Team For Rawalpindi And Islamabad) 5.Sialkot Smashers

In the latest developments of Pakistan's version of Twenty20 League (PSL), it is learnt that five teams (Lahore, Karachi, Sialkot, Faisalabad and a combined team from Rawalpindi & Islamabad) will feature in the inaugural edition that is being planned to stage in March 2013. The players will be split into three categories. Category A will have players ranging from $60,000 to $75,000; Category B from $35,000 to $50,000; Category C $25,000 to $30,000. However, an uber-marquee player like Chris Gayle may be offered up to $100,000 if he is willing to play.

Note:- All The Information Above Is Confirmed.

I really hope these Pakistan franchises don't recruit our players but I doubt they will go there anyway same with all the other nations. Unfortunately another major incident has happened in Pakistan today so this super league of theirs looks interesting lets see if it goes well hopefully for their sake :)

Nice promotion Step from PCB chairman Zaka ashraf but the tournament was to short and will be played on a single venue shows lack of interest and funds

I don't think any foreign players will go especially to a place where their lives may be in danger besides, there are other T20 leagues are already happening with the recent one Caribbean Premier League. Even if other countries allow their players to participate in Pakistan 'super' Legaue, I pretty much doubt most of them will go :D

But will foreign players go? especially what happened today in Pakistan another major incident 2 I think I pretty much doubt but good luck :D
