Injured Gul to miss Champions Trophy

  shares 52

Umar Gul, the Pakistan fast bowler, has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to an injured right knee. He sustained the injury last month after the Centurion ODI against South Africa and has been sidelined since.

He will fly to Melbourne for surgery in the first week of May. The injury also means he will miss the fixtures against Ireland and Scotland next month.

"Gul complained of right knee pain during the recently concluded one-day series against South Africa," a PCB spokesman confirmed. "He was rested for the last two one-dayers for imminent damage to his medial meniscus and bone of the right knee. A later MRI scan confirmed a full thickness tear of the posterior horn of medial meniscus with patchy bone bruising on his right knee.

"In order to expedite his return to cricket and quick rehabilitation, PCB have contacted Dr Alexander David Young in Australia, who in his initial reports has confirmed damage to his right knee and has given a timeline of 8-12 weeks for his full recovery (after the surgery)."

Gul, who missed the final Test against South Africa, played the first two ODIs but missed the rest of the series due to the knee injury. He also missed the ongoing President's Cup domestic one-day tournament for Habib Hank Limited.

This is unfortunate that Gul will not be able to take part in the Champions Trophy, due to injury. He is a match winner for Pakistan. The games are played at The Oval, Edgbaston and Cardiff. Paks games mainly feature Oval and Edgbaston. I have witnessed Gul win games for Pak at the Oval, he really thrives on it in England. He got 5/6 vs New Zealand in T20 World Cup and turned a certain defeat vs England in ODI series to a victory taking the stumps out to level the series.

I think this is a big loss for our bowling attack. I hope to see a Pak give it to another bowler on the fringes (not Wahab or any other tried and tested). Let it be time to give confidence to another bowler or 2 that are close to first team.

Gul is a match winner in English conditions, especially at the back end of a match. Those saying Gul is done, he has been an ever present and given his all for Pakistan, he never flirts with controversy and holds values that other players should look to.

Oh...!! We could have watch a grate battle if Gul is there..., But rest of Pakistan side is really capable side to be champs

PCB should add ABDUL RAZZAK in GUL replacement. That the best choice for PAK TEAM.

  • Sports4Youth on April 22, 2013, 8:30 GMT

@ kingsland :- I completely agree with you. Instead of crying over Gul's injury, PCB should have dropped him long back. He does not have 116 matches worth of experience since his debute 10 years ago. But He has played his debute match 116 times. Even today the newcomers like Junaid, Irfan etc are miles ahead of him.

Now I just hope PCB does not spoil the moment of luck by bringing Sami, Riaz or Tanvir.

Rahat Ali, Asad Ali, Sadaf Hussain, Adil, etc should be a better choice.

In the batting this time I Hope to see HARRIS SOHAIL.

In the keeping I just hope the young wicket keeper MOHAMMED RIZWAN gets an opportunity. He did well in the previous tournament.

It is a bit of setback for Pakistan but having said that when one door closes, many new doors open up. Umer Gul has not been at his best in recent past. He seems to have a confidence problem and this might be the break he needed to gain his peak fitness so it is a good news for Pakistan. Having said that, it may be a good time for Pakistani selectors to introduce a young fast bowler. This will be an excellent platform for a new young fast bowler on helpful English wickets. Saddan Hussain and Anwar Ali are worth a look, while Ehsan Adil did not do too bad either. Based on domestic performances,Apart from a very familair name, Imran Khan also looks promising. If he is even half as good as great Imran Khan, then Pakistan's fast bowling future will be in good hands.I also think people are being unfair to Wahab Riaz.He can bowl at 145K+ and did not do bad in second ODI he played in SA! He needs to tighten up and repeat his semi final performace. Sohail Tanvir and Sami are duds/failed players

  • Desihungama on April 19, 2013, 21:06 GMT

Well, all I can say thanks to Gul for his services in spearheading Pak's attack in the absence of Amir, Asif bans but really he was never cut off for the mark. At best, he is a great T20 bowler and should just stick to what he does best.

  • Sports4Youth on April 19, 2013, 17:13 GMT

@ Stark62 : I compleately agree with all your comments below. Also I would like to add that even Kamran Akmal should be left out of the 15 members squad.

    .

  • on April 19, 2013, 16:42 GMT

Where is Anwar Ali. I wan to see him play for Pakistan 11. That guy can swing the bowl like some thing.

  • uzairamir on April 19, 2013, 16:00 GMT

i can guarantee if pcb selectors become agressive in their seletion pakistan can surely be one of the top teams and can regain their past glory.we can produce great fast bowling and as far as ive seen in domestic cricket we also have very good batsmen coming through

  • uzairamir on April 19, 2013, 15:56 GMT

i think maybe its time for all the senior players to go.Pakistan team will struggle for some time if they leave but for how long for the talent we possess at this stage it will maybe take a year or so to fill the void which the senior players will leave

  • Stark62 on April 19, 2013, 14:04 GMT

I'll be happy for as long as Sami, Sohail Tanvir, Cheema, Tanvir Ahmed, Riaz and Farhat don't make the 15 man squad, along with Younis the Flop Khan Failure!!

Must induct two of Asad Ali, Sadaf Hussain, Ehsan Adil, Zia-Ul-Haq, Rahat Ali and Mohammed Rameez into the 15 man squad.

  • Syed_imran_abbas on April 19, 2013, 9:09 GMT

this is blessing in diguise.. he only good in t20 format.

  • Sports4Youth on April 19, 2013, 7:29 GMT

One thing is clear that most of the comments here say that Gul's injury is no loss for Pakistan, especially in the 50 over format. Also I agree.

Also most people are of the consensus that Sami, Riaz & S.Tanvir should not be selected. Again I agree.

BUT NOW MOST IMPORTANTLY LET US SEE WHAT THE SELECTORS THINK.

One last thing remains, HOPE KAMRAN is dumped for good.

    .

  • getsetgopk on April 19, 2013, 5:58 GMT

Irfan, Junaid, Adil, Ajmal and allrounders Afrid and Hafeez should form a very formidable bowling attack if not the best for CT. Asking Adil to bowl a full ten overs in international cricket against top teams could be a bit tricky, the guy is young and inexperienced. He should have been given more chances on the SA tour and this could prove costly in the end but hope he does well.

  • on April 18, 2013, 23:52 GMT

Sami has no place in the current or future Pak team, we should find and groom young new bowlers in the short format. Contrary to a couple of comments above, he was indeed a genuine (if wayward) quick bowling consistently in the mid 150s. He was unplayable in a NZ tour during the tests, but unfortunately was never able to achieve the same accuracy again.

  • on April 18, 2013, 21:52 GMT

hey guys check out this guy shoaib maqsood. his record in a-list is amazing he is averaging 50 & is in gud form his strike rate is fantastic. why pcb does not select this guy & he did well today also.

  • nadism on April 18, 2013, 19:49 GMT

Umar Gul is a real match winner in the shorter formats of the game. Pakistan will miss him greatly for the tournament.

  • SamNY2013 on April 18, 2013, 19:45 GMT

Perfrect oppertunity for young Ehsan Adil - he did well in local tournaments.

  • Zee_1203 on April 18, 2013, 19:36 GMT

In my opinion, Abdul Razzak should has to be given a chance.

  • Pakistan_Foreva on April 18, 2013, 19:26 GMT

    @Sparsh_the_player

Sami did indeed average around 150+ in his prime for a while, and he was clocked at 161 km/hr once (the third fastest delivery recorded at the time)

However now he has seriously lost form and agree that it wouldnt be a great choice to pick him. THIS is however an excellent opportunity to try out Asad Ali and Sadaf Hussain both who have amazing bowling stats in domestic cricket!

  • Nadeem1976 on April 18, 2013, 19:26 GMT

gul is only exceptional in T2020 cricket so we will not miss him at all in ODI's. I hope we develop young bowlers to replace gul in ODI cricket. he is not good in ODI and test.

  • kc69 on April 18, 2013, 18:58 GMT

Umar Gul missing out is a big jolt for Pakistan team because his experience is very much useful in English conditions.Yes he was not consistent in SA tour probably because of injury that he was hiding.Tough task on the hands of PCB is to find a suitable replacement(they will mostly make it a joke by selecting Sohail Tanveer in the name of experience).

  • on April 18, 2013, 18:41 GMT

why should no try the best bowler upcomming from wasim akram's pace bowling talent hunt program........ if they can find a guy with 145k+ speed ....... it will be really awesome to watch on those pace friendly pitches .... well wishing gud luck to Gul and team Pakistan

  • DD_f0rever on April 18, 2013, 18:35 GMT

    @ Qamar Naqvi

150 kmph by Sami ? In your dreams, probably. When he used to partner Akhtar his speed was at most 145-147 kmph AT MOST, that too when we was fresh and young. Not any more. I saw him in BPL too. He was hardly going above 142-143 and you say 150 that too consistently ? Even Steyn and Morkel don't cross 150 on consistent basis.

  • pipsonian on April 18, 2013, 18:04 GMT

he wasn't bolwing very well recently. Could be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan and a chance for upcoming bowlers to step up.

  • on April 18, 2013, 17:50 GMT

Although Umar Gul has been off form recently I feel he would have been more than useful in the English conditions. I guess we won't be able to find out now. Hopefully one of the younger fast bowlers in the squad can grab a chance and show how good they are.

  • on April 18, 2013, 17:33 GMT

Mohammad Sami the only bowler in world cricket who has Hat tric in Test, ODI as well as T -20 deserves an other chance. He is stll any time better than Yasir Arafaat or wahab Riaz. The only bowler in Pakistan who regularly bowls at over 150k

  • Sports4Youth on April 18, 2013, 16:53 GMT

So now two things have happened good for Pakistan.

    1. Yonis Khan had been dropped by PCB.

    2. Now Umar Gul is out due to injury. These are guys who should have been dropped long back, but the PCB was dragging their feat on them.

    3. Now just hope that Kamran Akmal does not get selected in the final squad.

That will make a perfect team for Pakistan.

    .

  • on April 18, 2013, 16:00 GMT

It is true that gul was not in consistant form BUT it is a major set back for Pakistan in Champion Trophy. as its in UK and Gul has been good in those conditions and others are too inexperience . its 50-50 for pakistan.new guy ( if they tested new ) may get a good chance but if new doesnt perform well then gul will be really missed.

  • wrenx on April 18, 2013, 15:23 GMT

A big loss for the one-day team, definitely. He would've enjoyed the English conditions, and he's a handy lower-order bat (far more competent than any other seamer in the team). However, in the long term, this may be a good thing - Gul's form has really deteriorated in terms of is consistency, and some forced time away from the game might help. He plays all 3 formats and all his matches are away, that's tough on a fast bowler. This also gives an opportunity for another bowler to step up for Pakistan during the Champion's Trophy. Get better soon Gul, we need you at your best.

  • on April 18, 2013, 14:48 GMT

some one mentioned ,aziz cheema, he is a big joke as for pace bowiling is concerned,i have seen his 122kph bowiling against england, please pcb dont select these kind of guys i,e tanveer, cheeme, and sohil tanveer. Since i am not pakistani but following there games regularly, cheeers.

  • squarepeg on April 18, 2013, 14:08 GMT

Real bad news for cricket and Pakistan. Wish Gul a fast and full recovery. One of the best limited over bowlers around whose experience would have given the new Pakistani pacers someone to fall back upon for advice and guidance.

  • Sports4Youth on April 18, 2013, 13:56 GMT

    No Wahab Riaz, M.Sami & S.Tanvir please.

Please get in EHSAN Adil, SADAF Hussain, RAHAT Ali, ASAD Ali etc. Please move beyond the old failures.

    .

  • MurtaMac on April 18, 2013, 13:55 GMT

Might not be the worst thing to happen to us. Gul has been way below par for a while now in ODIs and Tests. He seems to turn up in T20s otherwise his form as of late has been fairly mediocre. Gives us a good chance to blood a promising new youngster and NOT Tanveer Ahmed, Mohammed Sami or Wahab Riaz i.e. tried and tested flops.

  • zesh92 on April 18, 2013, 13:55 GMT

I have just learned about a player who is 19 year old and he is bowling at the speed of 157 Kph his name is Rana Adil

  • Sports4Youth on April 18, 2013, 13:50 GMT

    This is GREAT NEWS !!!

Call it blessing in disguise or a Stroke of Luck. Last three years he had been failing miserably but the selectors did not have the guts to drop. That delayed the launching of JUNAID & IRFAN in the big circuit.

Now the PCB will be forced to try some younsters alongside of Junaid and Irfan, and I just hope it wont be W.Riaz, M.Sami or S.Tanvir. Please bring some fresh blood like Junaid & Irfan. Even Cheema will be better than Riaz or Sami.

I hope to see EHSAN Adil, RAHAT Ali, SADAF Hussain etc.
