Moin Khan, the former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper, has been named chief selector and manager of the national team. Moin had been Pakistan's head coach for two months till the end of the recent World T20, and is currently a member of a three-man panel to evaluate candidates for coaching positions with the national team.

The position of full-time selection committee head has been vacant for the past 10 months after Iqbal Qasim decided to not renew his contract and since then, an interim selection panel has been working. The board has also appointed former batsman Zaheer Abbas as principal advisor to PCB chairman Najam Sethi.

Moin has been Sethi's choice for various posts in the PCB setup. He was originally named chief selector last year during the legal wrangle in Islamabad High Court but the decision was nullified by the court. He was subsequently appointed team manager.

The PCB had been functioning under an interim management committee for a large chunk of 2013 after the court suspending Ashraf as board chairman in May; it ruled Ashraf's election to be questionable. But then Zaka Ashraf was reinstated by the court as PCB chief in January, only to be axed by the Pakistan Prime Minister, the board's chief patron.

The PCB has selected teams since July with an interim selection committee of Azhar Khan, Saleem Jaffar and Farukh Zaman - the trio whose stint ended after the announcement of World T20 squad.

The position of the chief selector has had plenty of changes in recent times. Incoming chairman Sethi removed Aamer Sohail, a week after he had been appointed by ex-chairman Ashraf. The PCB, under Ashraf, had also considered Mohammad Ilyas for the head of selection committee but never made it an official appointment and Ilyas was restricted to the junior selection committee. Rashid Latif was the next man named by the succeeding chairman but, despite committing to the role, he refused to sign the contract over differences with the PCB. His tenure was expected to be effective from April 1.

Wapuser, I do not agree with you that Razzak is not performing. However he never got a chance to perform and show his skills, he has been frequently dropped from the team because of the wrost player like Hafeez. So tell me when and were did the Razzak got a chance to perform if he is selected also he will not be allowed to bat in top order and also he did not get a chance to boll, then how can you say he is not performing.

Please remember the days when Razzak use to server the country and also won many many matches for Pakistan, he also used to pull the victory from opponent team. After all his efforts we shall make him captain at least for his renaming years of his career. Pakistan shall consider his previous records and make him captain.

I agree with your point that youngsters must be given change, thats correct but the team shall have experience players as well with in the team.It shall be a combination of experience and youngsters....

Mustafa I don't agree with u regarding Razzaq!! For how long we will c these old players??? Where is razzaq performing?? Nd u r asking to give him captaincy Naye players like jamshed, hammad, haris etc zyada deserve krte hai!! That's what I personally think

Posted by Mustafa008 on (April 23, 2014, 18:46 GMT)

Pakistan need changes now, please select Abdul Razzak as the team captain along with other good players, remove Hafeez from the team.

Posted by Mustafa7861 on (April 23, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

This is good new, now we can get back some good players like Abdul Razzak and Nasir Jamsheed. Now Razzak shall be the captain for the team.

It's a Good move By the Pcb. It remains To be seen. He needs to a better Job at pointing His Coaching Staff and Players.

If he was the one responsible for howlers such as the selection of Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal, yet again, Pakistan Cricket has no chance

I wish Inzamam is given some responsibility. His experience will definitely improve performance.

Posted by android_user on (April 23, 2014, 2:01 GMT)

changing the top management or selecting panel doesn't make any difference. it is about the team and players which needs to be changed. and as far as i remember, Mohsin Khan had a great stunt as a team coach when pak whitewashed eng in UAE but he is still not being considered which is very sad and hard to understand. i strongly suggest pcb to install mohsin khan as a head coach and you guys will see the difference in team's performance & attitude. I hope this gets posted and read by pcb officials.

one person for two posts!!!!!?? PCB should learn about management from BCCI.....whatever the issues with BCCI, but it never fails in managing the resources and building world class infrastructure...i wonder till today all Asian cricket boards except BCCI failed to get one coach to train their team....but BCCI has three coaches for three departments--batting, bowling, fielding...its all about managing the resources and utilizing them effectively

It's a good decision by the PCB to appoint Moin Khan as the chairman of the selection panel, as his last tenure only lasted 1 week.

However, I don't think it is a great decision to also make him the manager of the team. I understand as the manager he will always be traveling with the team & can see first hand how the players are performing on & off the field. But, I think the negative to Khan as manager is that he might build a "friendship bond" with the players & that could lead to favoritism, instead of fairness.

Anyhow, I hope that Moin Khan does well with both of these roles & collaborates with the coaches, players, & management.

For the first time I reckon that Mr. Najam Sethi has decided something beneficial for Pakistan's cricket. Moin Khan is a fighter and Pakistan needs a fighter to instill the fighting spirit into the team.

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (April 22, 2014, 13:46 GMT)

Moin is not the solution as he is a traditionist who will continue selecting old horses like Shoaib Malik, Kamran and Faisal Iqbal. We need to try out our youngester like Sami Aslam, Haris Sohail and Raza Hassan which is not gonna happen under Moin. I would also like Fawad Alam to be made captain of our T20 team and thus make him ready to take over OD and test teams too when Misbah retires after the world cup. I prefer him over Umar Akmal and Shehzad as he is more mature and is a better communicator with a good head. Pakistan should soon move on to build a new team with Ahmad Shehzad, Sami Aslam, Fawad Alam, Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Irfan being the core players.

Posted by android_user on (April 22, 2014, 11:10 GMT)

With all those people still demanding that Misbah should step down from captaincy for world cup, I guess they dont know how to appreciate all that he has contributed. There is no one more logical for captaincy other than misbah, he has played so many match winning knocks, the whole team would get out but misbah would always stand like a wall. He has time and time again shown his flexible captaincy when Pakistan won the last test against SL on the last day chasing around 300. That man deserves nothing but praise rather than unreasonable criticism

The whole setup is weird of PCB. Had this feeling that this was coming.

The one thing I'm a bit happy with is that now, after such a long time, the PCB is making a lot of experienced former cricketers as selecters, coaches etc. I won't be surprised at all if we see Waqar Younis as the head coach. I just wish that now we get a proper batting and fielding coach with some experience of playing cricket in the past. Zaheer Abbas wasn't also a bad choice as the batting coach but lets just wait and see what happens in the up coming weeks.

Posted by SenseStatement on (April 22, 2014, 9:14 GMT)

Moin or somebody else not make much difference on the cricket. We have problme in the overall setup which need a big change.

Hope current selection committee will work honestly and make all their decision with honesty and purity. We need to bring more domestic cricket in from there we can hunt for the new talent. T20 cricket is becoming more famous then any other format,,,we much maintain an age cap for T20 players and anyone more than 30 years of age should not be part of T20 cricket.

i do like moin khan and his approach towards cricket. But PCB would never learn how to run a board .... learn from SL or BD if not BCCI

Posted by   on (April 22, 2014, 6:42 GMT)

Only time will tell that 2 positions to same persons will work or not. Moin has also been named in 3 member committee to select coaches. In other words moin is now in full control of everything from coach to selection to playing 11. So he will be responsible for any failures in future. It has been widely reported that since last year when he was manager, he has a good interference in selection as well. so responsibility of recent failures should be put on all but in pak it is very simple. they just put everything on 1 person and rest stays there.

good decision to make moon khan as chief selector but I don't understand that why is najam sethi the chairman he knows nothing about cricket.I think zaka ashraf was a better option

Posted by android_user on (April 22, 2014, 0:51 GMT)

such a great decision from pakistan cricket board and Najam sethi .well done sethi saab

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 20:03 GMT)

very good decision, chief selector should select the playing 11 as well.Well done, this has happened louds of time that a player is being selected in team but never been given chance in playing 11.well done PCB

Posted by android_user on (April 21, 2014, 19:38 GMT)

moin as a selector will be good. or moin as a manager will be good.

but i dont think giving 2 positions is the right think. if he is team manager then he shouldnt be selector as its a clear conflict of interest. manager works with coach and captain on tours so he wont be able to do justice with both jobs. also selector should be a full time job looking for new talent. plus we cant ignore then behind the scenes politics of pak cricket. so 2 positions will not benefit in long run.

Get rid of Misbha 1st from ODIs. His time is up. Give the ODI-T20 honours to Afridi till 2015-2016 WCs. Appoint Umar Akmal as long term deputy in ODIs & T20 to take over from Afridi. Azar Ali is a good choice for Tests in future after Misbha retires.

Posted by seo7seo on (April 21, 2014, 17:40 GMT)

If we think from management(Najam Sethi) point of view, they have taken the most intelligent move. Zaheer Abbas and Moin Khan know very well the dressing room environment/politics. These two will now certainly take their decisions accordingly. So many times it happened that Pak lost a match just because a tussle was going on in that small room.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2014, 16:53 GMT)

Seems to made a right choice Pakistan. But you never know with Pakistan as there is always a chaos around the corner.

Posted by AndyZaltzmannsHair on (April 21, 2014, 16:29 GMT)

No one in cricket understands the concept of conflict of interest. His dual roles will not end well. It will only lead to trouble.

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (April 21, 2014, 16:21 GMT)

Honestly I am so disappointed with Nawaz shareef to reward Najam sethi this post. Pakistan need a good administrator. there should have been 2 different people for these two different jobs. Cheif selector is a full time job. The best selector in recent times was mohsin hassan khan. Waqar should be made a long term coach. Misbah is doing a good job. Hafeez shouldn't have quit captaincy.

Posted by FawltyBean on (April 21, 2014, 16:17 GMT)

Sri Lanka should follow PCB lead and appoint Jayasuriya for both posts

Posted by Illusion00 on (April 21, 2014, 16:15 GMT)

what make Najam sethi to be a Chairman of Pakistan Cricket board. Shoaib Akhtar rightly said,we pakistani never respect our ex Cricketers. All the best for Moin khan.I want to see Rashid latif to in Pakistan cricket board Management.

I hope Moin as a chief selector will bring right people in the right formats with defined roles within their constraints. The likes of Fawad Alam, Umar Amin, will get test exposure and the likes of Nasir Jamshed, haris sohail, hammad azam, Raza Hassan, Awais zia, will be given few opportunities to shine in the limited overs games. Right mix of new and established players will enhance bench strength plus we will develop ripe product to play on all kind of pitches as if a chief selector observes with keen eye, Pakistan domestic circuit has potential to provide national team the batsman to play in all conditions. Few of them are great against faster bowling and few are awesome on turning tracks. Now it is the responsibility of Moin to extrude them out and raise them. Bowling bank is fine, with Aamir returning next year and irfan, we have strong fast bowling and a good spin bowling department As a manager, he already did fine job. Looking forward to have good fortunes WAQAR FOR HEAD COACH

IAS2000: I cannot believe that Misbah is still being criticised after all his match winning/saving knocks!!

Agreed that he should not be included in the limited formats but this article is about Moin Khan!

Also, please check your spelling! It should be "loses" and not "looses"!!

Posted by android_user on (April 21, 2014, 15:50 GMT)

PCB is a joke really

Posted by android_user on (April 21, 2014, 15:09 GMT)

Well he did a good job as a team manager. Hopefully the atmosphere in the dressing room will be better knowing that the manager is also the chief selector. It should improve team unity as well, hopefully.

Posted by IAS2009 on (April 21, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

the first agenda is to get technically sound players for Test and ODI, batsmen who can rotate strike, get rid of Misbah as captain, appoint T20, ODI and Test captain, find clean hitters for T20, Moin was always a match winner with his positive attitude in batting and in captaincy, Pakistan cricket is boring in Misbah captaincy, it lacks aggressiveness, Misbah approach to aggressiveness is slogging and play recklessness shots after blocking balls which looses games, not a single batsmen is established under his leadership which is failure in my opinion.
