Sethi back as PCB chairman, two days after removal

28

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered a stay against the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judgement that had removed the PCB administration under Najam Sethi chairmanship, annulled all its decisions, and reinstated Zaka Ashraf as chairman. A three-judge bench - headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali - accepted the Pakistan government's plea on Wednesday, reinstated the Sethi-led management committee to run the PCB, and restored all its decisions. The bench called all the parties involved for a hearing on May 27.

The changes at the top of the PCB in the last two days have come a full circle. On May 19, the IHC had reinstated Ashraf as PCB chairman, saying there had been no proof for the reason of his removal in the first place, and annulled the committee headed by Sethi and voided all the decisions made by it over the last four months. That move was likely to impact the Pakistan team significantly because their head coach Waqar Younis, team manager and chief selector Moin Khan, and other staff were appointed during Sethi's most recent term.

On May 20, the Ministry for Inter-Provincial Co-ordination, which oversees sports affairs in Pakistan, escalated the issue to the Supreme Court, appealing against the IHC's decision to remove Sethi and reinstate Ashraf. In its plea, the government said the IHC's order to reinstate Ashraf was detrimental to Pakistan cricket and would begin a "chain of events that will create immense chaos and destruction, costing millions and millions of rupees. All reforms towards election, constitution making, and international commitments will be at peril."

Sethi, speaking to the Tribune, said while he supposedly didn't really "want to" return, he would accept the directions given to him by the board's patron. "I said this before also, I didn't want to come here [the PCB]," Sethi was quoted as saying. "[But] this is the patron's decision. If he wants to keep me as chairperson, I'll stay. If not, then he can bring someone else in."

now when zaka ashraf is coming back again with in a week or month???

  • on May 21, 2014, 17:33 GMT

Remove both of them since they have no cricket brain. Make Ahsan Mani or Arif Abbasi as the Chairman. For Cricket sake.....

  • J751 on May 21, 2014, 14:44 GMT

I am no fan of Sethi, but as he has the government's backing,he is in a stronger position.Zaka should accept this reality and let the PCB function with some semblance of order.

  • NUMLIAN on May 21, 2014, 13:59 GMT

I think both Najam and Ashraf should be shown the door, neither is inevitable.

  • on May 21, 2014, 13:11 GMT

I think it is better to stick with Najam Sethi and let's see where it takes us. According to him, certain series have been promised so let's see whether they take place. If Pakistan actually does stand to benefit in the near future as Sethi claims, I have no problem with him as the chairman. Zaka Ashraf did nothing during his tenure anyway (Sethi has at least been better than him!), so having Sethi for now might be the best thing for Pakistan.

All I can say" hahaha" that's the only thing at should be said at this stage

  • MianMoosa on May 21, 2014, 11:47 GMT

That,s why IMRAN KHAN says PCB should be not under Govt & their should not be any political interference...PCB should be organized as an independent body, its own constitution, Board chairman,s should be elected through proper method, not nominated,,,

  • Ammar72 on May 21, 2014, 10:55 GMT

Let us nominate Sethi and Zaka as Chairman on alternate month basis.

  • on May 21, 2014, 9:33 GMT

This is Madness !!!! ICC should take action and BAN PCB until their internal matter is not resolved.

No wonder why the whole world would not laugh on us for this humiliation.. Is there any end to this madness????

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:38 GMT

To all my fellow Pakistanis, why is it humiliating?? What difference does it make?? I don't understand the logic behind it either but I fail to see the connection of foreign teams not touring Pakistan because of this. If anything, it shows that there is a healthy democracy. Keep in mind that high court's decisions can be easily overturned by Supreme court. So relax and let these people figure out what they want.

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:34 GMT

Cant Zaka Ashraf jst sit back n let us concentrate on cricket? i mean wht he did in his regime? appointing Muhammad Akram as bowling coach who almost led us to scarcity? or making the most incompetent selection committee ever seen?

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:26 GMT

What is going..? it is humiliating seriously.. i think its kind of a joke everyone can come anythng.. please stop this chairman ship war its very bad for our future.. Plz

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:10 GMT

What on the earth is happening here? Why PCB can't even decide its chairman?

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:09 GMT

Its just humiliating stuff.................... Musical chair or whatever we hope that one day we will find someone who will take bold decisions just for the sake of COUNTRY and don't bring personal egos in national issues atleast ................. may PCB's soul rest in PEACE........................embarrassment :((((((

  • on May 21, 2014, 8:08 GMT

For God Sake Stop this madness, Zaka..Sethi...Zaka...Sethi, ICC please come and do something and as far as my opinion goes, Sethi don't deserve this job.

The power struggle is RIDICULOUS to say the least.

  • ABLcric on May 21, 2014, 7:43 GMT

This is not cricket only!! This is how all institutions are operating and governed in our beloved country, including the government. Its true, the musical chair joke continues

  • Bilal_Choudry on May 21, 2014, 7:42 GMT

For the good of Pak cricket, I hope Sethi is allowed to put in a new fair PCB constitution in place, followed by impartial elections to select all PCB functionaries, including PCB chairman. I can only hope that he gets support from majority of people in Pakistan. Cricket is one of the good things in Pakistan, it's time that they fix it for good. Maybe other good things will follow....

  • on May 21, 2014, 7:14 GMT

The government should think of a constitutional amendment in which appointments made by a previous regime end with that government...given the precarious thinking that all institutions and government organisations should be independent and autonomous the interference by teh courts in teh basic government authority of making key appointments which really makes or breaks a government should be upheld...an operational organisation like teh PCB cannot operate with constant removals inits top heirarchy

  • NabeelUsmani on May 21, 2014, 7:00 GMT

Since the current government came into power last year, the pendulum of PCB's leadership has being swinging between Ashraf and Sethi who by the way happen to come from non-cricketing backgrounds. The question is, Is it really worth it for Pakistani cricket to steep down any further for the sake of one of these two gentlemen?

  • on May 21, 2014, 6:59 GMT

we are trying our best to make Pakistan Cricket laughing stock for the cricketing world... even in ZC this sort of swapping and changing dont happen... in situation when for over 5 years no intl team has toured Pakistan... we cant see any team coming for next 5 years atleast...
