Ajmal declined T20 captaincy

ESPNcricinfo staff

Saeed Ajmal has said that he declined an offer to captain the T20 side because he wanted to be "relaxed" about his cricket. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Ajmal said he was reluctant to take up the captaincy, which was offered to him after Mohammed Hafeez's resignation in April, because he felt he was better as a team player.

"I don't want to put myself forward for captaincy. I think I am better as a team player. I do think about being captain of Pakistan, but I am reluctant too," Ajmal said. "Captaincy in Pakistan is not easy. The captain ends up being blamed for anything that goes wrong. Just look at Mohammad Hafeez. He resigned after our exit from this year's World T20. Why? It's because all the blame was being dumped on him. I have been approached for captaincy but I declined. I want to be relaxed about my cricket. God has blessed me with a sunny disposition and I want to keep it that way."

Hafeez had quit following the team's group-stage exit from the World T20 and the selectors are still looking for a T20 captain. Pakistan's next T20 match is against Australia in October as their short tour to Sri Lanka in August does not include any T20 games.

Ajmal also praised Misbah-ul-Haq's performance as captain, saying it was better than former Pakistan captain, Imran Khan. Ajmal said Misbah has been criticized unfairly despite being one of the leading run-getters in the side.

Misbah was appointed captain of the ODI squad in 2011 and has led Pakistan in 71 games of which the side has won 39. He has a batting average of 47.21 as captain and in the 32 ODI games over the last 12 months, Misbah has an average of 52. The PCB has also backed Misbah, retaining him as Pakistan captain until the 2015 World Cup.

"Misbah-ul-Haq has been outstanding in this role. In fact, when you consider the circumstances in which he has performed his job, I would say his services as captain are greater than even Imran Khan's," he said. "Yet he doesn't always receive his due. He's been a tremendous leader during an extremely difficult time for Pakistan and he's been our leading run getter.

"Yet each time we lose a match, people forget about his magnificent contributions. They start demanding that he be dropped. I really fail to understand this. Even as a batsman, people complain he's too slow, that he blocks a lot, does a lot of tuk-tuk. This is not fair to Misbah. He is a watchful batsman and becomes extra-watchful if the team is losing wickets from the other end, which often happens with us. His approach is appropriate and serves the interests of the team. I can tell you as a bowler that it pleases me greatly to see Misbah standing at the crease. If he is batting, it gives me heart that I will have runs to bowl at."

Saeed Ajmal is right. why do people criticize misbah ? Because he is slow? for some of those non-educated people I have a message. Every batsmen has his playing style. Some are run-getters some are attackers. misbah has a different and a better playing style. he defends his wicket and allows the other batsmen to play his innings. He builds up his innings and when Pakistan need runs he gets them for us.

Why would anyone want to be captain under this PCB? I think we should leave him bubbly as he is on the field and off and not bother with the nuisance of captaincy.

I agree to ajmal's views and he is too old to be the captain of team Pakistan now it is time to give the captaincy to our young talent Ahmed Shehzad he is the best available player to lead pakistan in T20s & if seniors support him then he will be the captaining Pakistan after Misbah in all formats of the game......

it was the combined effort of fazal mehmood Abdul hafiz kardar mushtaq muhammad and IK that gave us such a strong and solid history in the game and world fears us now. IK captained in those years when pak was regarded as rookies and the competetion was so fierece with most dominant windies team of all time , ever consistent australia, and ever dangerous england ruling the world and in that time IK made pakistan somebody out of nobody. Today if we are regarded as one of the best teams in cricket field. It's due to the legends like IK fighting their hearts out and you want to compare those asian earned victories of misbah with those remarkable and history creating victories in australia and england of imran khan? ask misbah to first win a test in england. south afrika , or australia (leave series) then come and compare him to IK.

@basit subhani as i said u need to understand the history first... IK didnt just captained pakistan in 1992 world cup. he won a test series against australia in australia against england in england and what has your great captain misbah done so far? how many tests leave series just tell me how many tests has misbah won overseas? just 2 i can remember one in nz where pak anyways wins and one in westindies against the weakest windies team of all time.

talking about your players only miandad and zaheer abbas can be regarded as legends playing for IK. mudasar nazar mohsin khan had average careers nothing special. tell me who made inzi? waseem akram? waqar? moin? rameez raja? mushtaq ahmed? aqib javed? saeed anwar? ijaz amed? it was IK who spotted all the talents that went onto become greats of the game. Moreover IK captained the pakistan when pak was playing in their initial years and look at bangladesh despite playing for 25 years there are still underdogs coz they couldn't find a leadr

Totally agree with Ajmal with regard to Misbah. That's pakistan cricket for you, they don't appreciate what they have, only when Misbah retires supporters will realise his worth to the team. He is captaining a very weak team and had done well during a difficult period.

    Respected Mr. Typical IK fan,

Zaheer Abbas debuted in 1969. He was considered a great even before Imran became a regular in the side. Mudassar Nazar was not groomed by Imran; it was Mushtaq Mohammad who happens to be IK's favorite Pakistani Captain as well

"... zaheer abbas mudasir nazar and so on so on became great under imran's captaincy .."

  • Dummy4 on May 31, 2014, 7:45 GMT

Ahmad shehzad will give the captaincy in every format
