Shahid Afridi has said that he is planning a Twenty20 match to raise money for the almost half a million people displaced by a military operation in Pakistan's northwest region.

"I am in talks with the authorities and will soon announce a Twenty20 match in Lahore to raise funds," he told reporters at the launch of his charity foundation. "I want to return to my country what it has given me, with an aim to serve my people."

Afridi said the foundation had set up a 16-bed maternity hospital in the remote Tangi Banda village, which is located in the northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. The hospital, named after Afridi's father Fazlur Rehman, was paid for by Afridi who said he had been inspired by former Pakistan captain Imran Khan who runs a cancer hospital in Lahore through charity.

Afridi added that his foundation would also work on education and sports to turn youngsters away from the path of extremism. "The youth in remote areas have no education," he said. "If we educate them then they can be more helpful for the country."

Afridi said he would spare more time for his foundation after the 2015 World Cup.

a very impressive step by Shahid Khan Afridi. Every sportsman (especially who signed central contract of PCB & playing country cricket outside) should also do such activities and donate to the foundation....Afridi have larger fan following all over the world and his personality further confirms that every single penny of his foundation must reach the needy! waiting for official website or bank account details of the foundation for donations etc............

Great Initiative by Afridi. Ajmal is making a cricket academy in Faisalabad which is also great to see. Sometimes i feel a bit disappointed with 2W's for not taking any such initiatives for country as they were huge icons in there times atleast.

Mohammad Yousef was just here in Silver Spring, maryland for a fundraiser. Unfortunately, it was arranged and announced just 2 days before the actual fundraiser, so not many people knew about it. If Shahid is reading this... he can contact M. Yousef and get the contact numver for the same Masjid. We'll definitely make space available for you. Guaranteed sellout and maximum for Shahid Afridi if he comes here.

I hope, folks who are placing messages of support for Afridi, also do their best to help people in difficult situations and not just pass the buck to others. I will not only make donations to his charity (hospital foundation) but encourage my family/relative as well. I hope, you guys can do the same thing. All the best :)

Great initiative by an icon player

Kudos Afridi bhai. Your initiative will inspire the next generation into taking part in philanthropy, same way Imran Khan was able to do. In our own family, my late grandfather helped finance schools in Dhaka, Pabna and encouraged all of us to be sympathetic to the plight of the needy. I will take inspiration from your initiative and my grandfathers, as I do the best I can to help society in a positive way by working as a Civil Engineer/philanthropist. Lots love from Dhaka/Wellington.
