Australia v Pakistan ODI Series - 1st ODI

Australia v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 4 wickets (with 35 balls remaining)

2.57 pm: The crowd's built up. Huge cheers for the 'home team' as they walk out. The Australian openers follow. Marsh will face, Gul will start proceedings for Pakistan. All set! Two slips in place.

2.41 pm: The pitch looks very favourable for batting, but it hasn't been used often. Batting first, the experts believe, was the right decision. It's hot, the pitch is flat, and the bowlers may have to toil hard.

Australia: Michael Clarke (capt), Brad Haddin (wk), Shaun Marsh, Andrew Symonds, Callum Ferguson, Shane Watson, James Hopes, Nathan Hauritz, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Ben Hilfenhaus

Pakistan: Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan (capt), Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib MAlik, Kamran Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Saeed Ajmal

2.30 pm: Time for the toss. Australia have won the toss and opted to bat. Shaun Marsh, Shane Watson, Stuart Clark, Andrew Symonds and Ben Hilfenhaus are all in. Younis Khan says he would have batted first had he won, and says a score of around 260-odd would be chaseable. Shoaib Akhtar is back! We'll get you the XI's in a bit.

2.25 pm: We're still waiting for the toss, hold fire. Wow, the venue looks neat. They're playing at the Dubai Sports City, and the stands are covered in a wave of blue seats. The capacity is around 25,000, though there just seem to be around a few hundred spectators at this point. But it's Pakistan playing, so it should build as the game progresses.

Faras: "I'm a Pakistani fan but I don't feel let down by playing a 'weakened' Australian side. I think this has taken us back to early 2007 when we played Zimbabwe and Bangladesh and the country was happy that we were playing cricket despite it being against a weaker opposition. It also gives our players a chance to climb up the ratings."

A slight element of complacency there, this Australian side is much stronger than one would think, and as Pakistan haven't played in some time, it brings both teams, despite the latter being stronger on paper, on fairly even terms.

Ari: "I am an Aussie fan and I think it is great they made this tour work for the sake of Pakistan cricket but isn't it a slight let down that some of our best players are being rested? I agree the Ashes are a priority this year but if I was a Pakistan player I would feel slightly let down."

2.00 pm: Our Pakistan Editor Osman Samiuddin gives us the series preview. They're showing some footage from the X-games on TV, some slick acrobatic moves, but the coverage should start soon.

1.55 pm: We'll get you the details from the toss shortly, but do read the preview to the game in the meantime.

1.50 pm local time: Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first ODI between Pakistan and Australia being played in Dubai. It's been a difficult few months for Pakistan, with teams refusing to tour the country, the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore, and most recently, the ICC deciding to strip the country of its right to host the 2011 World Cup.

However, the team won't be short of support at the UAE which is more or less a home away from home. Australia are missing some big names, but they also have Andrew Symonds returning to the side after a fairly long break. They just recently suffered a 2-3 ODI series defeat in South Africa but their win in the final game will give them confidence going into this tour. Shoaib Akhtar finally makes a return after a while; he's managed to recover from a niggling knee injury.

1.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, back of a length on middle, gets back and defends it solidly towards mid-on

2.1

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, testing line outside off, rocks back and taps that to point

2.2

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, fullish outside off, gets forward and leaves it be, inviting him into the drive but Marsh isn't tempted

2.3

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, short of a good length on the off stump and moving away, shoulders arms to that one

It's a new pitch, an untested one, so they're taking their time to get a look-in

2.4

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, driven firmly but straight to cover, full on the off and he pushes at it with a flourish but is unable to beat the in-field

2.5

Umar Gul to Marsh, 2 runs, short of a good length outside off, gets back and runs it down wide of Shoaib at third man, rushes back for the second as he's a little slow to react, no surprises there

2.6

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, banged in short, pulled away to square leg, kept it down all the way through

End of over 3 (2 runs) Australia 6/0 (RR: 2.00)
SE Marsh    4* (14b)      Umar Gul    2-0-4-0
BJ Haddin    1* (4b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-1-0

3.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, FOUR, Haddin's into the act now, waited patiently for the first three overs and seized on it as soon as he got a chance, just a fraction short and he was onto it quickly, got back and crashed it through the off side wide of point

3.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, pushed him back with a shorter one on middle, defended cautiously back to the bowler

3.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, on the off stump, maintaining a shortish length, dabbed towards cover off the back foot

3.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, a hint of desperation there, pushed it fuller on the off, he made room and swatted it down the ground to mid-off, didn't time it well enough

3.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, 1 wide, short outside leg, backs away and earns a wide, straying in line but he's working up some good pace here, decent start after a long enough break

3.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, 1 run, well run, just tapped it wide of cover and rushed off to the other end, sound start, chanceless so far, they've taken their time

3.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Marsh, no run, kept a little low and got to the keeper to the bounce, good length outside off and let it through with shouldered arms

End of over 4 (6 runs) Australia 12/0 (RR: 3.00)
SE Marsh    4* (15b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-7-0

4.1

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, tapped wide of midwicket for a single

4.2

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, probing him outside off, pushed firmly to cover

4.3

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, on the off stump, a touch fuller, defended watchfully towards cover

4.4

Umar Gul to Marsh, 1 run, on middle and leg, driven wide of midwicket and rushes off for a single, a shy at the stumps, misses and Marsh dives full length to get back, probably did his hamstring, he's in some pain now

He's getting some attention rightaway, though he managed to get back on his feet. A clear sign of frustration, was banging his fists on the ground, ruing the injury. It's the exact same injury he sustained in February. Hope it's nothing serious this time, and indications are that he's going to continue. An on-field conference with the physio and the non-striker currently underway as the Pakistanis wait. Right, he'll continue, but with a runner. Nathan Hauritz will be doing the honours.

4.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, on the off stump and shot away from the batsman, bowled at 138.9 kmph, Haddin handled it well, getting back and opening the face to guide it to point

4.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, a touch too full, and straight on middle, clipped away to fine leg

End of over 5 (3 runs) Australia 15/0 (RR: 3.00)

SE Marsh    5* (18b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-7-0

5.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, slightly short of a length and moved back in, hit through the line, pushing it straight to mid-off, a touch uppish but safe

5.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, 1 run, bringing it back in again, got back and punched it wide of mid-off for a quick single

5.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Marsh, 1 run, slower one, bowled at 117 kmph, picked it, it's a touch full on the off, opens the face to play it down to third man

5.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, short outside off and gets some good bounce, Haddin lets it through

5.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, no run, slower ball on middle, bowled at 113.2 kmph, dabbed in front of midwicket, decides against the single

Zohaib: "I don't know why there is no Sohail Tanvir in today? He is a key player and always causes problems for the left handers early on! Pakistan will regret this decision of not playing him, and playing Rao Iftikhar instead, whose bowling line is very predictable!"

5.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Haddin, 1 run, pushes at it across the line, much fuller on the off, mistimes it short of mid-off but there's enough time to steal a single

End of over 6 (3 runs) Australia 18/0 (RR: 3.00)
BJ Haddin    10* (17b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-10-0

6.1

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, short of a good length on the off, defended towards cover on the back foot

6.2

Umar Gul to Haddin, FOUR, well struck, on middle and leg, pushed it through the line wide of the bowler, hit it firmly and beat the gap between mid-on and mid-off, nicely timed

6.3

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, short on middle, swatted down to mid-on, should have dispatched that, missed out

6.4

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, full on the off stump, low full toss, times it well but hits it straight to mid-off, uncharacteristic of Haddin really, unusually sedate here

6.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, hmm, it;'s getting interesting here, overpitched on middle and he struggles to get it past the bowler, drives it well, times it well but is unable to beat the gap

6.6

Umar Gul to Haddin, SIX, that was coming, a touch too full from Gul and Haddin picks the length early, strikes it cleanly over long-on for a big one, was in the slot and he didn't waste the opportunity this time, that'll ease the pressure a little

End of over 7 (10 runs) Australia 28/0 (RR: 4.00)
BJ Haddin    20* (23b 2x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    4-0-17-0

End of over 8 (6 runs) Australia 34/0 (RR: 4.25)
SE Marsh    11* (24b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-16-0
BJ Haddin    21* (24b 2x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    4-0-17-0

34 in 8 overs doesn't read too slow. Haddin's just opened up, so the scoring rate, if he stays in, should pick up. Both have had a look-in and must have gotten used to the pitch now. It's not as flat as it initially appeared, but it must have eased out.

8.1

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, driven straight to short cover, presented the full face but there's a fielder positioned exactly for that

8.2

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, short and wide, makes room and chops it away towards third man

8.3

Umar Gul to Marsh, no run, good length on middle and off, gets forward and drops it back to the bowler

8.4

Umar Gul to Marsh, 3 runs, shot! Marsh is away now, slower one but too full on the pads, gets forward and drives it beautifully wide of midwicket, nice wristy stroke that, gets three

8.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, back of a length, gets back and dabs it down to third man, runs coming a lot more freely now

8.6

Umar Gul to Marsh, 2 runs, OUT, run out, excellent throw from the deep, Marsh has to go, chopped it down wide of a diving point, cover gives chase, drags it back in and returns a throw on the half-volley to Nasir Jamshed at the non-striker's end, there's always three there but Hauritz is slow on his feet, the bails are clipped and he's well short of his ground. Salman Butt was the fielder, excellent work

Pakistan have taken the second powerplay. Gul will continue

10.1

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, slower ball bowled on a length outside off, pushed through to cover

Bez: "Given the discussion on the pitches and grounds getting flatter and smaller respectively, how does this one fare in terms of size of the boundaries? I wonder if the Aussies pull off their sliding stops. On some Indian grounds that would be murder!"

10.2

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, full on the off, driven straight to cover

10.3

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, tickled off the back foot towards midwicket

10.4

Umar Gul to Haddin, no run, short outside off and he backed away from it

Boundaries of a fair size. They are certainly not as small as the ones you saw in the ODIs in New Zealand, but not as large as they are in Australia. The relatively low number of boundaries struck in this innings should be an indication.

10.5

Umar Gul to Haddin, 1 run, overpitched on middle and leg, driven down the ground to long-on

10.6

Umar Gul to Watson, 1 run, almost a waist-high no ball but it isn't given, plays it well though, guiding it to third man, the umpires had a look at each other and both agreed it was a legitimate delivery

End of over 11 (2 runs) Australia 51/1 (RR: 4.63)
SR Watson    8* (6b 1x4)      Umar Gul    6-0-26-0

Iftikhar Anjum to Watson, 1 run, length on the pads, flicked away to fine leg

11.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Haddin, 1 run, made room and crunched it past mid-off for a single, as expecting a free swing of the arms but the length wasn't quite there

11.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Watson, no run, back of a length on the off, pushed to cover off the back foot

11.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Watson, 3 runs, short and wide and he went after it, cracked it uppishly in front of cover, three more, didn't time it well enough but still got three for it

11.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Haddin, 2 runs, nicely played, opened the face there, slightly short on the off and he forced it between point and cover for a couple more

End of over 12 (7 runs) Australia 58/1 (RR: 4.83)

Excellent effort from Pakistan, and they owe it to Afridi - he leads the team off the field - and Ajmal for restricting Australia to a paltry score. Australia started well, particularly with Haddin and Watson getting them to a strong position, but once spin was introduced into the attack, they collapsed. They lost eight wickets for 27 in around 11 overs as the spin duo flummoxed the batsmen with their variations - Ajmal with the doosra, and Afridi with the googly. Though the last pair frustrated them, adding 46, Pakistan will back themselves to win this, though we can expect the Australians to use Clarke and Symonds for more overs than they usually do, along with Hauritz. Join us in about ten minutes for the run-chase.
