Australia v Pakistan ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Australia v Pakistan

Australia won by 6 wickets (with 29 balls remaining)

2.58 pm: Right, the players are out. Butt and Shehzad will open, and starting the proceedings for Australia is Bracken. All set! Two slips in place

Vikram: "Let's see if little Dougie can perform even better than he had did in domestic one-dayers. I would like to see him open with Bracken."

The lovely Mayanti Langer's on screen now, quite a distraction, and she's speaking to James Hopes who's lamenting about the way Australia have played in the ODIs recently. Chin up!

Fawwad: "I think Pakistan too has to make a point here. It does'nt matter if they won last time, we all know it was not an easy win for them. The Batting has to be good and i guess a score of 250 would really test the australians against the spinners."

2.40 pm: Experts believe spinners have a lot to gain. The pitch is hard and dry, though they are a little cautious this time, not quite calling it a belter like they did in the first game.

First comment of the day in from Chris: "Lets hope the Australian batsmen can actually do something productive today, no more excuses!" You'll have to wait for a bit, though. They have to make sure they do well with the ball first.

2.26 pm: We'll get you the details from the toss shortly. The news is that Pakistan have won the toss and opted to bat. Nasir Jamshed is out injured, and in comes Ahmed Shehzad, who makes his debut. Three changes for Australia. Shaun Marsh is replaced by David Hussey; Ben Hilfenhaus and Stuart Clark make way for Ben Laughlin and Doug Bollinger. So still no Sohail Tanvir.

2.20 pm local time: Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second ODI being played at the fantabulous Dubai Sports City Stadium. Australia were spun out in the first game for a paltry score, and though they fought back to make Pakistan work hard for their runs, 169 never seemed a threatening target.

Australia have had a fairly bad run in the shorter format of late, losing ten ODIs in less than four months since the start of the year. Our Stats Editor S Rajesh analyses their slump in detail here. It was almost as if Pakistan were playing in Lahore or Karachi, with a strong crowd of around 18,000 - still below capacity - turning out to support their team. Shoaib Akhtar looked the main draw, but didn't impress.

However, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal proved more than a handful, and Australia should have drilled hard at the nets, facing their spinners, in trying to put in a much improved effort in their second outing. There's a while to go before the toss, so read the preview in the meantime.

The new man Shehzad to take strike now, for the first time in ODIs. He's facing Bollinger. Two slips for him too

1.1

Bollinger to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, good bounce, bowled at 136 kmph, banged in short outside off, backs away

1.2

Bollinger to Ahmed Shehzad, no run, beaten, a driving length outside off and moves away just as he is tempted to play it through the line

1.3

Bollinger to Ahmed Shehzad, FOUR, loose ball on the leg stump, it's full and he cashes in, clips it off his pads through square leg to get off the mark in style

An accurate throw to the striker's end, and Haddin clips the bails.

Ahmed Shehzad run out 4 (7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 57.14

Butt should have been given out, but instead it's Shehzad who's gone back. Butt crossed Shehzad while running, and then turned back, but the umpires have got it wrong here

Michael Clarke had a chat with the umpires, as he too was in doubt as to who was out. Replays show that Asad Raud, the umpire at the non-striker's end, was looking elsewhere, towards the keeper instead of the two batsmen who clearly ran past each other before ending up at the same end

Laughlin into the attack

16.1

Laughlin to Younis Khan, OUT, he strikes immediately! A tame dismissal really, short and wide, goes for the cut, swings away as he plays the shot, takes the outside edge and Haddin makes no mistake

Younis Khan c †Haddin b Laughlin 28 (34b 5x4 0x6) SR: 82.35

A timely wicket, that. Younis was starting to look fluent and threw it away just at the right time for Australia. We are past the powerplays now, and the batsmen coming in will be kept quiet for a while more, adding to the already slowish run-rate

It didn't flash on the screen, the buttons don't seem to be working, but the message is out to the players in the middle

Shoaib Malik c †Haddin b Hauritz 7 (12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 58.33

Pakistan in a spot of bother now. Misbah cannot afford to play the way he did in the last game, needs to keep the scoreboard ticking here

Irfan: "In addition to Paul's comment. You are right. Australia will be is less pressure facing spinners if they have modest total to chase. But the real problem would be the way they played spinners in first ODI. They were hardly picking them. To milk them, they have to pick them. "

24.6

Bollinger to Salman Butt, no run, pushed through on a good length on middle, dropped on the off side, sent back, well done Bolly

We've reached the half-way stage, and Australia have the edge at this point. They appeared to stutter a little with Younis going strong, but after his dismissal, Pakistan have struggled to get things moving. Rotating the strike is the key now. Misbah got himself into a bit of a hole last match, and he'll have to play more freely this time.

32.3

32.6

Laughlin to Salman Butt, no run, overpitched on middle, pushed to midwicket

It's been difficult. Australia haven't had to rely on their part-timers. Their seamers have done the job for them here, with Bollinger in particular keeping the lid on the scoring and hardly giving anything away. Hauritz picked up Malik and Misbah, and Afridi, in his brief time at the crease, has been kept quiet though Australia would be ruing that dropped chance. They have their noses ahead here, but irrespective of the target, the run-chase on this pitch may not be a smooth ride. This is shaping up to be an interesting one.

Sean: "In an era of big hits and smaller boundaries it seems the art of rotating the strike is slowly being lost as batsmen either wait for the next bad ball or try to get a bit too innovative. I suppose the days of Bevan and Jonty Rhodes manufacturing singles from dot balls are long gone."

Fraction full on the off, makes room while simultaneously stepping out, tries to launch it over the in-field on the off side, gets a thick edge and the keeper pulls off a beauty. Big blow that!

Hauritz has left the field, probably injured his finger. Hilfenhaus is the sub

43.2

Laughlin to Umar Gul, 1 run, missed run out, Haddin was really horrible, swatted to mid-off, an accurate throw all along the ground to the striker's end as Shoaib is struggling to make it, and he lets it through, a bit of a bad bounce but he should have collected that

43.3

Laughlin to Shoaib Akhtar, FOUR, pays the price, fullish, makes room and slices it over point, nicely done

44.5

Hopes to Shoaib Akhtar, SIX, that's disappeared, Hopes is getting the treatment, just a fraction short on the off, he makes way and swats it with contempt well over long-on

44.6

Hopes to Shoaib Akhtar, FOUR, cheeky, slower one bowled full outside off, he reaches for it to slice it over point and beat a diving third man, 200 up, another 25-30 runs and they would have done really well

Pakistan will rue the fact that they didn't bat out 50 overs. 207 is competitive, but the Australians will back themselves to chase it down. Pakistan, on this pitch, will again bank on their spinners to do the job.

The seamers started it for Australia, and Hauritz bowled well in the middle overs to keep the run-rate in check. Wickets fell at fairly regular intervals, and the Pakistan batsmen struggled to get partnerships going. Had it not been for that late flourish from Shoaib, they wouldn't have passed 200. Their bowlers, though, have a fighting score to defend, but Australia would have worked hard on the areas they faltered in the last game. Join us in some time for what should be a very interesting run-chase.
