Australia v Pakistan ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Australia v Pakistan

Australia won by 27 runs

Right, so Umar Gul will start proceedings, and facing him is James Hopes. Brad Haddin is his opening partner. Two slips, all set!

2.58 pm: All the pre-match formalities. The umpires strolling out, the fielding side in a huddle, the openers bearing a quiet confident look as they walk out. A nice, dome-like press box behind the bowling arm. Not much activity out in the stands though.

2.53 pm: Around seven more minutes to go before play. For all you IPL fans, Chennai Super Kings are taking on the in-form Deccan Chargers in Durban. By the way, it'll be Siddhartha Talya taking you through the commentary today.

Ali: "As much as I love Shoaib Akhtar and the excitement he creates, I feel it was a good decision to leave him out. He simply was not performing and really does not look 100% match-fit! Maybe this will spur him to work harder..." Nothing yet from our Australian friends.

A stamp of approval from most of you folks about the changes PAkistan have made. Here's one more - TA: "I think Pakistan has done the right thing by replacing Akhtar and Rao Ifthikhar with Tanvir and Arafat, but looking at the previous 2 matches I think they should have also replaced Shoaib Malik with Fawad Alam."

Bajwah: "At last Sohail Tanvir is back. A lot of pressure will be on him. He was out of the side due to one loose performance against Sri Lanka. Although pitch and conditions are not bowler friendly but he alongwith Arafat has to do a lot better than Shoaib Akhtar and Rao. Wish them good luck."

2.40 pm: The pitch, the experts believe, is a little different from the one used in Dubai. It's much drier, and the surface is a little abrasive, so it might assist spinners. The fast bowlers, on the other hand, may have to toil.

Laughlin and Bollinger, who impressed in his debut, have been asked to sit out for Australia. No Shoaib Akhtar or Rao Iftikhar for Pakistan! So switching seamers in both camps. Just a trickle of fans in at this point, there's a hill at the ground, so there are areas that are not entirely covered. No surprises about the low turnout in this sweltering heat. It's close to 40 degrees celsius.

2.30 pm: Time for the toss. Australia have won it and opted to bat. Clarke says the pitch looks pretty dry, and expects it to produce a bit of turn. Hilfenhaus and Clark come back in. Younis says he would have batted, given the unforgiving heat. Sohail Tanvir is back, and so is Yasir Arafat. Who have they replaced? We'll let you know soon.

2.15 pm local time: Right, so the series is level 1-1. Both matches have yielded results by fairly convincing margins, but Australia have the momentum going into this third ODI in Abu Dhabi - a shift of venue. Some worries for Pakistan. Nasir Jamshed has gone back to Pakistan due to an injury, and Saeed Ajmal has been reported for a suspect action, though he can bowl in this game. Still a while to go for the toss, so read the preview in the meantime.

0.1

Umar Gul to Hopes, FOUR, Hopes is away, loosener really, overpitched on the off stump, presents the full face and drives it back past the bowler to beat mid-on to the boundary, sign of things to come?

BJ Haddin    0* (0b)

Tanvir to bowl, haven't seen him in some time. Two slips again

Sohail Tanvir to Hopes, 1 run, got it to move it away a touch, short on the off at around 122 kmph, guided to third man

Sohail Tanvir to Haddin, no run, nicely done, a touch fuller and shaping away, Haddin leaves it alone

JR Hopes    12* (13b 2x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-11-0

Another Fawad Alam fan - Mudassar: "I think Fawad Alam should have been played in place of Yasir Arafat. He is a nice batsman at the end of innings and Pakistan could have the luxury of another spinner in his shape."

4.2

Umar Gul to Hopes, no run, short of a good length on the off, defended towards midwicket off the back foot

JR Hopes run out 15 (22b 2x4 0x6) SR: 68.18

Hopes promised a lot in his brief stay, but that was some sharp work from the Pakistan captain. Not much in it for the fast bowlers here, so they'll need all the help they can get from their fielders to make any inroads.

Watson walks in

Two wickets with no addition to the score, and Australia have squandered a solid start here. Clarke comes in with his team in a bit of a bother now

BJ Haddin    17* (21b 4x4)      Umar Gul    5-0-22-1

BJ Haddin    17* (27b 4x4)      Yasir Arafat    1-1-0-0
MJ Clarke    6* (9b)      Umar Gul    5-0-22-1

These are harsh conditions but the pace bowlers have recovered very well after a shaky start to limit Australia to 40 for 2 in ten overs. They've decided to take the second powerplay now, and there's a change of ends for Tanvir.

10.6

Sohail Tanvir to Clarke, 1 run, overthrows this time, sloppy stuff, fielded nicely with a stylish slide to his right and embarassed himself with a needless throw at the non-striker's end to throw away another run

MJ Clarke    9* (15b)      Sohail Tanvir    5-1-20-0
BJ Haddin    17* (27b 4x4)      Yasir Arafat    1-1-0-0

Nathan: "Two wickets down for little runs and one all in the series, if ever was a time for a captain's knock it is now. Let's see if Pup is up to the challenge....."

11.1

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, no run, fullish on the off, stroked firmly to mid-off

11.2

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, no run, Clarke is handling this well, tight line, he moves front and across and defends it solidly wide of the bowler

11.3

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, no run, firmly struck but straight to point, slightly short outside off, cut away but doesn't find the gap

11.4

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, no run, stands tall and drives on the up, but back to the bowler, can Arafat pull off his second consecutive maiden?

11.5

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, 1 no ball, nope, oversteps and almost had him lbw, offcutter, slower that Clarke failed to pick, moved well across to work it away, was struck in line and would have hit leg, too bad though

freehit coming

11.5

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, FOUR, went after it, was standing well outside leg and the bowler chased him, tried to get it into the blockhole, Clarke reached forward and managed to squeeze it wide of mid-on, didn't time it well but had enough on it to take it to the boundary

11.6

Yasir Arafat to Clarke, 1 run, shortish on middle, jumps up and he pushes it uppishly wide of a diving midwicket for a single

12.3

Sohail Tanvir to Clarke, FOUR, classy, too straight this time, in the zone for Clarke, who gets a stride across and whips it away between midwicket and mid-on, using his wrists, 50 up

12.4

Sohail Tanvir to Clarke, FOUR, he's spoiling it for Tanvir here, just a fraction overpitched on the off stump, his eyes light up and he drills it along the ground past the bowler for another four

Change of angle now, coming around the wicket. Sign of a moral victory for the batsman, forcing that change

12.5

Sohail Tanvir to Clarke, no run, too wide of the crease and darting it in, defended on the leg side

12.6

Sohail Tanvir to Clarke, no run, short of a good length on the off, punched wide of mid-off

13.2

MJ Clarke    22* (28b 3x4)      Sohail Tanvir    6-1-28-0

Sean: "I surprised Aus didn't send Symonds in instead of Clark considering how scratchy Michael Clark was in the last game contrasting to how fluent Symonds was by the end of his innings. " Clarke, though, has looked pretty fluent here. 22 off 28 after coming in with two wickets down is good going.

Clarke and Haddin have done well, and despite the two quick wickets, the scoring rate hasn't dropped significantly. Clarke, in particular, has cashed in on any given opportunity, and the lacklustre fielding, quite a contrast to the run-out earlier, has helped their cause as well.

End of over 15 (1 run) Australia 63/2 (RR: 4.20)
MJ Clarke    22* (29b 3x4)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-1-0

A Symonds lbw b Shahid Afridi 7 (18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 38.88

Malik and Afridi have bowled ten overs between them, conceded just 23 and taken two wickets. Looks like we are heading for a seven-ball over now. Or maybe not, Bowden has saved the day. Superb spell from these two. Afridi has been consistent throughout, but bringing on Malik ahead of Ajmal has reaped dividends.

Bray: "Maybe it is just me to used to Australian dominance, but tonight for some reason I just cant stand reading the commentary. It angers me and annoys me watching Haddin, Clarke and Symonds all getting bogged down by these spinners. Australia has never had trouble playing them before? Why now? Surely the pitch cannot prevent them from at least trying to rotate the strike. Hopefully Ferguson can entertain me, I am just really annoyed at the moment. Perhaps it was my already foul mood.."

Saeed Ajmal to Ferguson, 1 run, gets on the back foot and punches it to long-off, three off the over

Credit to the Pakistan spinners, but the Australians, at the same time, have looked more intent on blocking than working the ball through the gaps. There have been times when big scores have been chased down on this ground, and Australia's own spin arsenal isn't as strong as their opponent's. They're not doing all too well here

34.6

Shoaib Malik to Ferguson, 1 run, tossed up on middle and leg, paddled to fine leg for a single

Australia have had to labour for their runs here, and though the Pakistani spinners have done exceedingly well, the batsmen have had themselves to blame as well for failing to get going.

Getting singles has not appeared to be their main objective, but just surviving against spin. Saeed Ajmal has not used his variations to full effect today. The straighter one in his previous over was probably the only one, but both Clarke and Ferguson have even struggled to counter his regular offspin. They need to step up now, a score in the range of 200, it appears, won't be safe.

Gul comes back on

44.1

Umar Gul to Ferguson, no run, slower one on the off, chops it short of point, mistimed a cut there

Dan: "I agree with Nathan, I'd love to see Hussey make some valuable runs today because I feel he is not doing the form he consistently shows at domestic level justice on the international stage, where I think his skills are just as adept and he hasn't been showing them. I'd love to see him become an integral part of the Australian team. Also interesting to note that when I sent this in, Australia's score was identical to that of the Deccan Chargers in the IPL game going on, it just took them 21 more overs to get there!"

Pakistan will fancy chasing this. Australia completely lost the plot in the middle overs, once the spinners came on. It was the combo of Afridi and Malik that did the damage, who kept the leash on Clarke and Haddin during their stand. Wickets kept falling at fairly frequent intervals, and even in the last ten, once the seamers came back on, Pakistan sustained very little damage. Join us in a bit for the run-chase.
