3rd ODI: New Zealand v Pakistan at Abu Dhabi, Nov 9, 2009
New Zealand won by 7 runs
Played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi (neutral venue)
9 November 2009 - day/night match (50-over match)

3.00pm The openers have made their way out. McCullum will face, Redmond is at the other end. Two slips in place, in comes Mohammad Aamer.

More support for Yousuf, this time from Jalal Khan: "I can't see the justification behind dropping Yousuf for Umar Akmal. I am happy to see Umar back in the side, but for the expense of Yousuf? No way, Umar should have come back for Shoaib Malik. Regardless of Yousuf's misadventures between the wickets, this is a series decider. And you need senior players to win you the big matches. Yousuf is our most experienced batsman. He should be there."

Sheryar: "Why is Mohammad Yousuf not playing today's crucial match??!. I can bet no one can match the stability that is provided by Yousuf in the middle order. He is a consistent performer and is definitely a treat to watch. We guys had planned at a get-together and now with no Yousuf in the playing squad, I am not interested to go!"

Srikanth: "The Pakistanis are an unpredicatble bunch. The current team looks good on paper. They surely must be able to see their way through this game. With Afridi becoming more sensible in his approach, Umar Akmal lending flair to the middle order and Razzaq and K Akmal who can hit the ball to all parts of the ground, the Kiwis must aim at setting a target of atleast 275. "

2.40pm Today in Page 2: Who does Andy Roberts rate higher - Gavaskar or Boycott? Alan Tyers on Jonathan Trott's new role. And Younis Khan in the cartoon.

2.36pm Lets take a peek at our specials panel for the day. Alan Tyres profiles Ian Botham in the 1980's; Kumar Sangakkara speaks of the upcoming tour of India and Ian Chappell lauds Tendulkar's mental strength following his herculean 175 against Australia.

There's time for the start, so read the preview in the meantime.

Toss time New Zealand have won the toss and opted to bat. They, expectedly, are unchanged. "It all depends on luck in a crunch game," says Younis. Mohammad Yousuf is not playing, in comes Umar Akmal, whose absence earlier in the series was baffling.

2.30 The weather in Abu Dhabi is as it always is, batting first is the way to go, the experts say.

2.25pm local time Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third and final ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. The series is tied 1-1; Pakistan inflicted a hammering in the first game but a McCullum-inspired New Zealand fought back brilliantly in the second to set up a fitting conclusion.

Josh Cairns: "Am I the only person that still beleives in Neil Broom? Whilst his run scoring ability currently seems to be in absentia, he continues to show plenty of gumption, particularly in the field. I predict he will come good today and make at least 30, maybe even 35."

    • Umar Gul 4-1-17-0
    • Mohammad Amir 4-0-16-0

Dave: "The thing McCullum did differently last innings? rotated the strike. Every time he tries to dominate a partnership by repeatedly hitting boundaries off a bowler, he struggles. It's no coincidence his best knocks have been in matches where he's played second fiddle for at least part of the partnership. Look for the single!"

8.1

Mohammad Amir to McCullum, 2 runs, almost jinxed him there, short on the off, a touch too quick for him as he gets it really high on the bat as he goes for the pull, airy but lands safe wide of mid-on

Mohammad Amir to McCullum, 1 run, the pull is out again but all along the ground this time and down towards a protective deep midwicket

8.6

Mohammad Amir to Redmond, FOUR, between slip and keeper, a widish slip was in place and he bisected the gap perfectly though not intentionally, rose up to him after landing short on the off, went for the cut, got a thick edge and earned a streaky four

End of over 9 (13 runs) New Zealand 52/0 (RR: 5.77)

    • AJ Redmond 16 (24b 2x4)
    • BB McCullum 29 (30b 2x4 2x6)
    • Mohammad Amir 5-0-29-0

9.1

Umar Gul to McCullum, no run, bowled on a good length on the off, defended back towards the bowler

9.3

Umar Gul to McCullum, 2 runs, short of a length again, and a misfield, lets it through his legs at point and allows them a couple more

9.4

Umar Gul to McCullum, no run, brilliantly fielded but run out missed, full toss outside off, driven wide of mid-off where Younis Khan hurls himself to his left and returns a strong throw at the keeper's end with McCullum well short, Kamran hasn't run in to collect it, Younis misses, giving McCullum just the time he needs to make it back

9.5

Umar Gul to McCullum, 1 run, short outside of, chopped wide of point, gets a run

9.6

Umar Gul to Redmond, FOUR, pitched up a fraction and he's onto it, gets forward and slaps it with utter disdain past extra cover and mid-off for a boundary

Redmond gets into the act, the last three overs have skyrocketed New Zealand's run-rate to over six. A sedate start given the right fillip at the appropriate time

End of over 10 (13 runs) New Zealand 65/0 (RR: 6.50)

    • AJ Redmond 20 (25b 3x4)
    • BB McCullum 38 (35b 2x4 3x6)

    • BB McCullum 42 (38b 2x4 3x6)
    • Abdul Razzaq 1-0-5-0
    • Umar Gul 5-1-30-0

TJ: "I'm curious what others think about Aaron Redmond? Given NZ's problems with openers, he seems to have done a very good job. But when Ryder is fit again, does Redmond get dropped? Or does one of Redmond, McCullum or Ryder slide down the order?"

11.1

Umar Gul to McCullum, 1 run, hurled it on a good length on the off, opened the face there and pushed it wide of point for a single

11.2

Umar Gul to Redmond, no run, bouncer, well bowled this time at 134.3, on middle and McCullum gets down in time

11.3

Umar Gul to Redmond, OUT, gone! Redmond is Gul's 100th ODI wicket, short of a length on the off, comes down the track and tries to slap it past the bowler, gets a top edge and it lands safely into the palms of Aamer at third man

    • BB McCullum 47 (42b 3x4 3x6)

    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-3-0
    • Umar Gul 6-1-36-1

13.4

Umar Gul to Guptill, no run, hurls it short on middle, pushes him back and he drops it in front of the bowler

Khawar: "My concern remains the Pakistani openers. In both the games thay were off the pace. In the first, if it was not for Afridi and other lower order batsmen we would have ended at 230 max. In the last game they again were so slow that it beefed up pressure on the middle order which eventually crumbled under pressure. I'm not a big fan of Farhat but since he is there I think we should have given him an opportunity in place of Khalid Latif who has been very slow for a one day game."

    • MJ Guptill 4 (11b)
    • BB McCullum 48 (43b 3x4 3x6)
    • Umar Gul 7-1-38-1
    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-3-0

Raheel disagrees with employing Gul right now: "Why is Gul an attacking bowler? I dont understant why hes put into bowling in the 1st PP? He should be kept until the 25th over where hes good in bowling yorkers and reverse the ball. Amir and Razzaq whould bowl. razzaq is capable of picking one or two wickets in the frist 10 overs like Amir. Gul should bowl after 20 or 25th over when you can reverse the ball. His previous wickets were edged and bowled not bowled or caught behind so not a good strategy."

15.4

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, no run, appeal for a catch, short on the off, stopped on him a touch, pushed it uppishly back to the bowler who dives forward but takes it on the half-volley, holds it up in a stifled appeal but the replays clearly show that fell short.

MJ Guptill c Younis Khan b Saeed Ajmal 8 (23m 21b 0x4 0x6) SR: 38.09

Reina: "OK, I'm a fan of New Zealand, and my love for SuperDan Vettori glows with the brilliance of a thousand suns, but this batting display has been as limp as wet celery. They're not great at playing spin, but they can do it, only none of them except McCullum and maybe Guptill have been picking the bowlers at all. Like, not remotely. I give Ross Taylor a bit of a pass for wanting to be cautious after two ducks in a row, but really. Extremely unimpressive. "

Pakistan have an excellent chance to seal the series here. Clearly a below-par score; they were 164 for 3 at one stage, but once McCullum fell, there was very little resistance. The pitch is taking turn, gripping a touch and the Pakistan spinners made full use. However, given the start they had, and the dominant position they had reached, the rest of New Zealand's batting line-up surrendered meekly. Pakistan still have a task ahead but will fancy scaling this down with relative ease. Join us in around 40 minutes for the chase.

Murtaza: "I've always felt Ajmal has been generally unlucky in terms of wickets in his ODI career! At last he's getting some reward and it's awesome to see him completely mesmerize the Kiwis! Brilliant stuff! Reminding me of Saqlain in his absolute pomp! "
