Sri Lanka in Pakistan ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Pakistan v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 234 runs

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third and final ODI being played in Lahore. Sri Lanka bounced back in the second match, inflicting a massive 129-run defeat on their opponents. Their middle-order stepped up after a disappointing collapse in the first ODI and their spinners Murali and Mendis have found their groove after they were handled well in the series opener.

Shoaib Akhtar has grabbed the headlines after the second ODI with his captain initially questioning his commitment, but then toning down on the eve of the decider.

There's still some time left before the start of play, so you could read the preview as well as Osman Samiuddin's take ahead of the decider.

Though the momentum is certainly with the visitors after their fightback, this promises to be an enthralling contest.

The news from Lahore is that Sri Lanka - who have an unchanged team - have opted to bat after winning the toss.

As expected, Shoaib Akhtar has been left out, and so has Sohail Tanvir. Fast bowler Sohail Khan and offspinner Saeed Ajmal are their replacements.

It's a little overcast but the pitch is a good one for batting. There are a few cracks but a score of over 250-260 should be gettable.

The umpires are walking out and the Pakistanis are in a huddle. Very few people in the stadium as of now, but we can expect spectators to trickle in as the match progresses. The Sri Lankan openers are now in the middle.

It'll be Siddhartha Talya and Pradeep taking you through the action.

Dilshan will take strike, and Umar Gul will open the bowling. All set!

0.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, good start, in the channel outside off stump and some good away movement, left alone to the keeper

Two slips in place

0.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, edged, and just short of Misbah at first slip! Short and wide, there to cut, gets a thick outside edge but Misbah's standing a touch too deep there. Takes it on the half-volley

0.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, beauty! Kicked off the pitch and swung away just as Dilshan prodded at it off the back foot

0.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, much fuller this time, seemed to hold its line, outside off again and Dilshan lets it go

0.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, short of a good length outside off and leaving the right hander, Dilshan lets it go

0.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, on the stumps, good length on middle and leg, defended watchfully off the back foot to the bowler

Good start by Gul

Sohail Khan to share the new ball. Never seen him bowl before, lets see how he fares.

1.1

1.3

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, nipped back in this time, good length outside off and Jayasuriya watched it closely through to the keeper this time

1.4

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, beaten again, the away swinger, full outside off and drawing Jayasuriya forward, he drives at it but misses as the ball leaves him

1.5

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, short of a length, spat off the pitch moving into the batsman, Jayasuriya had shaped himself for a cut there but the inward movement and the bounce led to him just mistiming it towards cover

1.6

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, the end of another good over, fuller on middle and off, defended off the back foot to the bowler

End of over 2 (maiden) Sri Lanka 0/0 (RR: 0.00)

TM Dilshan    0* (6b)      Umar Gul    1-1-0-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, good length outside off stump, gets forward to defend, gets a thick outside edge all along the ground to third man. Sri Lanka off the mark

Dave from Sri Lanka suggests Maharoof should come in at No.3 : "With Farveez Maharoof showing some composure in the past few games, I do believe it could prove to be a good idea to send him in at number 3. Of-course it would be experimental but, it could turn good if this also co-incides with the 2nd power play and also gives Maharoof the chance to prove his batting skill and improve his record. It'll also add further depth to the Lankans' batting line-up - Kapugedara dropping down to no:7 with the hard hitting Thushara to follow. Once-upon-a-time even Sanath Jayasuria was a lower-order batsman, but improved his record by openning the innings."

2.2

Umar Gul to Jayasuriya, 1 run, short of a good length on middle and leg, Jayasuriya fends it away to the leg side for a single

2.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, angling into the right hander, pitched on a good length on middle and off, defended to mid-on off the front foot

2.4

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, goes for it and misses, was not to the pitch there but had made up his mind to go through with the shot, short of a good length outside of and he tries to loft it over extra cover, predictably misses

2.5

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, beaten, full outside off and swinging away, goes for an expansive drive through the covers, misses again

2.6

ST Jayasuriya    1* (7b)      Sohail Khan    1-1-0-0

3.1

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, bang on target, good length on middle and off, defended off the back foot to the bowler

3.2

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, just a fraction full outside off stump and Jayasuriya goes for it, slashes hard from the crease, gets a thick outside edge and the ball flies over second slip to the third-man boundary

3.3

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, shorter and much slower, swings in a touch, outside off but wide enough for Jayasuirya to leave it alone

3.4

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, short of a good length outside off again, working up some good pace this time, a touch of inward movement, carries to the keeper at a good height

3.5

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, edged and wide of Younis Khan at gully, short of a length outside off, Jayasuriya plays it with soft hands, flies off the outside edge wide of a diving Younis towards third man. He had no chance there though.

4.1

Umar Gul to Jayasuriya, 1 run, good length on the off stump, just drops it on the off side on the front foot and rushes off for a single

4.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, FOUR, dropped, a chance gone begging, full outside off stump, Dilshan gets a touch forward and slices it towards point where Salman Butt fails to cup a sharp chance, the ball flicks his fingers on its way to the point boundary

4.3

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, good fielding but Dilshan had made it safely, dropped on the off side and rushes for a single, Gul picks it cleanly and throws down the stumps at the non-strikers end while turning back, Dilshan though is well in

4.4

Umar Gul to Jayasuriya, no run, good length outside off stump, swinging back in a touch, left alone

4.5

5.5

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, mistimes a loft over mid-off, not quite there to the pitch, lands on a good length on the off stump, he goes through with his shot that comfortably evades the mid-off fielder

5.6

Sohail Khan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, dropped, would be a little unfair to call it though! Full outside off stump and Jayasuriya drives at it with little footwork, the ball flies off the outside edge wide of first slip but Younis Khan at gully flings himself to his right Jonty style and manages to get his fingers to it, but fails to hang on. Valiant attempt.

49.6

Umar Gul to Maharoof, FOUR, the perfect end to the innings for SL! Full outside off, a poor length ball, struck cleanly wide of Afridi at long off, who tries fielding it with his foot, and predictably misses

Sri Lanka have done superbly here. They started off streakily and one must give credit to the Pakistan fast bowlers early on for giving little away and creating chances. Dilshan was dropped by Salman Butt early in the innings and boy did he make them pay! There was one over which changed the momentum of the innings. Iftikhar Anjum conceded 25 runs in the 15th over, and the visitors then kept the scoring rate consistently between 5 and 5.5 an over.

Dilshan reached his second ODI century and was involved in three consecutive partnerships of 50 and above for the first three wickets. The batsmen around him - barring Kapugedara - all made important contributions to help SL reach this formidable total. The spinners for Pakistan proved totally ineffective, conceding 154 runs in 26 overs without taking a wicket. There is still some purchase for the fast bowlers and the Lankan seamers will look to derive as much advantage from it.

The target will take some chasing and it'll be interesting to see if Afridi is promoted up the order to do some early damage. Join us in about 25 minutes for the run-chase.

End of over 50 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 309/5
MF Maharoof    8* (6b 1x4)      Umar Gul    9-2-45-3
