Mohammad Yousuf went on a record-breaking and run-scoring spree yet again as Pakistan piled on the agony on a hapless West Indies on the fourth day at Karachi. Needing 46 at the start of play to move past Viv Richards as the highest scorer in a calendar year, Yousuf duly made that record his own, and then continued merrily to a stunning ninth century in 2006.
With Mohammad Hafeez making a carefully constructed 103, and Inzamam-ul-Haq clobbering some runs as well, Pakistan rode to 399 for 6 before declaring their innings and inviting West Indies to chase 444 to level the series, or survive one day and a bit to save the game. They had more reason to celebrate in the field, as West Indies lost both their openers and ended the day on 39 for 2.
When the day started, all eyes were on Yousuf, and fittingly, he dominated the day, scoring 84 out of the 141 runs added for the third wicket with Hafeez today. With the pitch easing out into a good batting track and the West Indian bowlers gradually losing their intensity, Yousuf and Hafeez had a feast.
Yousuf started off with a fortuitous edged four which bounced in front of Denesh Ramdin, but he was soon into his stride, driving through the covers with his usual grace and languid ease. He was equally adept off his legs, clipping anything that eased towards the pads into the gaps between mid-on and midwicket. Like in the first innings, his timing was silken, he was rarely troubled by anything the West Indian bowlers threw at him. He finally got the record in fittingly emphatic style, flicking Collymore to the midwicket fence, and then celebrated by playing a similar stroke off the next ball to get to his 12th fifty-plus score in his 11 Tests this year.
Some of the West Indian bowlers showed moments of intensity - Daren Powell extracted some bounce from a surface which, quite inexplicably, seemed to gain in pace as the day went on, while Collymore and Jerome Taylor bowled a couple of probing spells as well. However, as the day wore on Brian Lara resorted to the part-time bowlers, and Yousuf gorged on them: long-hops from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were unerringly deposited to the midwicket fence.
Yousuf played an entertaining knock, but it wasn't flawless: on 68 he was dropped by Daren Ganga, who ran around from midwicket but failed to hang on to the ball; on 87 Taylor dropped a caught-and-bowled chance; and soon after he got to his hundred, Ramdin made a mess of a stumping chance off Chris Gayle.
Hafeez, meanwhile, clearly played the second fiddle, but he did his part perfectly, keeping his wicket secure while Yousuf attacked the bowling. Soon after getting to his second Test hundred, though, he nicked one from Taylor and Ramdin - who had a mixed day behind the stumps - plucked off a superb one-handed diving catch. Inzamam, though, ensured that there would be little respite for West Indies as he clobbered Gayle over long-on for six and made his way to a welcome half-century, his first in nine innings.
He finally declared when Pakistan lost Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq in quick succession, and Umar Gul and Shahid Nazir justified that decision by striking twice in quick succession. Gayle played lazily outside off and inside-edged to his stumps, while Daren Ganga, who was so impressive in the first innings, was trapped in front by an indipper. Lara and Sarwan ensured against further setbacks, but with a whole day to bat out tomorrow, West Indies are up against it.
