Charith Jayampathi spearheaded Sinhalese Sports Club's (SSC) defence of a formidable total against Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC), taking four wickets to secure the Premier Limited Over Tournament title at the Premadasa Stadium.

Defending 278, Jayampathi knocked over NCC's openers inside seven overs, and then dismissed Sandun Weerakkudy to reduce them to 44 for 3. Jehan Mubarak steadied the chase with a half-century but he was run-out soon after the debutant Lahiru Udara was dismissed for 42, leaving NCC on 128 for 5. The lower order could not stage a fightback and NCC were dismissed for 224 in 45.1 overs. Jayampathi finished with figures of 4 for 49 in 10 overs.

SSC's match-winning total of 278 for 9 had been set up by a steady first-wicket stand of 69 and Chamara Kapugedera's 70 from No. 4. Debutant opener Vishva Wijeratne was the second highest contributor with 49. SSC, however, had slipped to 224 for 6 in the 44th over - when Kaushal Lokuarachchi was out obstructing the field - before Dhammika Prasad's 26 off 22 balls provided a brisk finish.

Nice to see Kapu among runs again. Need to keep on performing consistently though.Selectors need to draft him in for T20 and ODIs. Specially considering the way Thiri and Chandi struggling to hit big when needed. Their batting does not suit shorter formats. They may come good in once in a while but better to give players like Kapu, Priyanjan and Angelo Perera proper opportunities at the top (Not at no 6 or 7) and build their confidence and nurture them. We don't have a huge talent pool and when we recognize proper talent we need to carefully manage them. Kapu,Priyangan,Angelo and Bhanuka are world class talent and if they fail it's not because of their fault but because of the short sighted politically motivated administrators. They have successfully managed to ruin careers of some really talented players such as Pradeep Hewage ,Nimesh Perera (and the list goes on) so far.

Mr Sanath, please select Kapu for at east T20 WC. We need aggressive talented players, we don't need too many accumulators in the T20 or ODI. Don't worry about the Stats, we need players who can turn a match around. Remember Little Kalu's average was around 11 and Sanath average was around 18 when they given opportunity to open. We lost T20 finals to WI because we had too many accumulators in our team thanks to Chief selector De Mel. Highly overrated players like Sag & Mahela put so much pressure to our lower order due to their inability to score quick runs. Mahela scored 33 runs in 36 balls and Sag scored 22 runs in 26 balls. Which is 10 overs and 2 balls they only managed to score 55 runs and wasted 10 overs, when we were chasing 138. We need more aggressive talented power hitters in our T20 & ODI team to have any hope.

It is high time that Charith Jayampathi is called to play in our test XI. His batting and bowling averages clearly show that he is a match winning all rounder. Really dont know why was Vishwa Fernando was chosen over this amazing player who has a perfect average in both the departments.
