Barney Gibson, a wicketkeeper, became the youngest cricketer to play in a first-class match in England when he made his Yorkshire debut on 27 April, 2011 at the age of 15 years, 27 days, displacing Charles Young of Hampshire in the record books 144 years after the latter represented Hampshire at the age of 15 years, 131 days in 1867.

Gibson was granted time off by his school in Pudsey in order to play, expressing his delight at missing triple science as a result. After a shaky start - not surprising given that England pace bowler Ajmal Shahzad was leading the Yorkshire attack -- Gibson settled his nerves by holding a spectacular catch in the 10th over to dismiss opener Luc Durandt off Oliver Hannon-Dalby. He went on to hold six catches in the match and took a single from the one delivery he faced with the bat.

Gibson had appeared in three Second XI matches before his call-up but subsequently resumed his development in Yorkshire's age-group sides, appearing for the Academy and Under-17 teams in 2012. His meteoric rise did not last, however, and he requested his release from the county to pursue other interests before the start of the 2015 season.
