A right-hand middle-order batsman, Alan Gordon was on the groundstaff at Edgbaston for a decade from 1963 without ever commanding a regular place in the XI. In 34 matches between 1966 and 1971, he managed only three fifties - all in 1970, when he scored 366 runs at 21.52 with a best of 65 against Surrey at The Oval. He played his club cricket for Coventry and North Warwicks CC and ran a pub - the Black Horse in Exhall for more than 20 years.
