Vijay Zol, the Maharashtra batsman and India Under-19 captain, will be available for his side's Ranji Trophy final against Karnataka, which begins in Hyderabad on January 29. The BCCI had earlier asked Zol to skip the final in order to train with the Under-19 team at the preparatory camp ahead of the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in the UAE.

The BCCI had given Zol permission to play only the semi-final against Bengal but the Maharashtra Cricket Association requested the board to release the young batsman for the final. Surendra Bhave, the Maharashtra coach, said the board had accepted the association's request and Zol is likely to join the team in Hyderabad on January 27.

Zol said he considered himself "fortunate" to play in the final. "I am fortunate to have been able to play a Ranji final in my maiden first-class season," he said. "I will try to help my team regain the coveted title and thus prepare for the big-match scenarios just before the U-19 World Cup."

Zol, who scored an unbeaten double-hundred on his Ranji debut in Maharashtra's season-opener, missed their last two league matches due to the U-19 Asia Cup in the UAE. However, he made a vital 91 in the quarter-final against Mumbai, helping Maharashtra beat the defending champions by eight wickets. In eight matches for Maharashtra this season, Zol has scored 517 runs at an average of 51.70.

@ganeshwar - the names you mention are a good crop of players. I would also select at least 7 players I see doing well in the future. They need to mature and then play for India. Some are streets ahead and their chance could come sooner - e.g. ZOL and Sampson. I first heard of Umar Nazir - good fast bowler just this Ranji season.

We all commented against BCCI on the previous article when Zol was asked to return to U-19 training camp by skipping Final. Now this is good news for Zol and his fans. Zol can really make difference in the Maharashtra team and this will boost his confidence in the U-19 camp definetely. Surely he will win Ranji final for Maharashtra and U-19 World Cup for India.

this is a good development. It is not often one has chance to play in a Ranji Trophy Final.

I agree with the views expressed that all these promising players,Zol,Nair Samson and some better bowlers are regularly sent on A tours because that will give them a lot of useful experience unlike sub continent tours. Indian cricket suffers a constant stigma because of their inadequate performance abroad. The BCCI needs to address that on a war footing. It would be a good idea to start a series of A tours to Australia,England,South Africa and New Zealand. The other thing for attention is a strategic planning of itineraries. There has to be a lot of vision in this not vision for having a quiet holiday by the planners ! As someone suggested, itwould be an exellent idea for many youngsters to play in the county circuit. That could really get them ready.

Vijay Zol is some serious talent and hope he spends a season or two in English county cricket before getting to Indian team.

Waiting for the next India A team tour. To get an idea on how some of the players like Zol, Sanju Samson, Baba Aparajith, Karun Nair, Rishi Dhawan etc. perform in foreign conditions!
