Ranji Trophy - 2nd semi final

Punjab v Karnataka

Match drawn (Karnataka won on 1st innings)

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.15am Morning everyone, the good news from Mohali is, we've had the toss. Karnataka win toss and field. That's already more action than we had yesterday. A feeble sun shining through, and the forecast doesn't mention rain.

The pitch should have plenty of moisture in the surface after having been under the covers all of yesterday. Karnataka bring in Mayank Agarwal and Ronit More for the injured Sharath and Samarth. Other change is the inclusion of Amit Verma for Abrar Kazi.

Vinay Kumar: "It's a team effort, all of us are eager to do well. Luckily we got an extra day to adjust to the conditions."

Harbhajan Singh: "The wicket looks more dry than the usual ones, hopefully this will be a good wicket to bat on, especially after the first hour. We've always thought we are the best team in the competition."

Manan Vohra, the surprise retention of Kings XI Punjab, batting with Jiwanjot Singh.

5.00pm A day of dominance comes to an end for Maharashtra. They finish on 164 for 4, after having rolled over Bengal for 114. Samad Fallah the hero of the day. Thanks for joining us today, hopefully the rains stay away in Mohali tomorrow.

4.40pm Motwani is dropped on 0 at gully off Dinda by Kaushik Ghosh, who isn't exactly having the greatest first day in first-class cricket.

4.30pm Two on-the-up cover drives off Paul take Jadhav to 40. Eight fours in that. Maharashtra 141 for 3. Soon after, Maco raises an uproar in the press box by diving (in vain) to stop a boundary at fine leg. That shot, from Bawne, brings up the 50 partnership.

Wicket for Bengal! Dinda gets Jadhav, caught and bowled. Maharashtra 141 for 4.

4.10pm Jadhav has been stepping out of his crease every ball. Saha comes up to the stumps now to Sarkar. Maharashtra 124 for 3.

3.55pm "Bawne flicks Sarkar for 4 to bring up 500 for the season, Then levels scores with a single to cover."

3.20pm Karthik says:"Dinda drifts onto Jadhav's pads twice, and is flicked twice, imperiously, for four."

And soon after: Shukla shapes one into Zol, who is trapped lbw. 91 for 3.

TNAmarkFromIndi: "While everyone was talking about Maharashtra's batting, it's their bowling that has put them in a strong position on Day 1. With more than four days to go, Maharashtra must take their time to really drive home the advantage. They have the batting to take this game away completely from Bengal."

3.00pm At last, something to cheer for Bengal. Dinda sends back Khurana for 48 in the first over after tea. Khurana is caught behind. Maharashtra 78 for 1.

And more reasons for Bengal to smile. Shukla bowls Khadiwale with an inducker. 78 for 2.

2.30pm Maharashtra have raced to 56 for 0, and it feels like Bengal batted a long time ago. Spin is on, for the first time today. Khurana drives Lahiri against the break, first ball, for a confident boundary.

And now it is tea. Maharashtra 74 for 0 in 15 overs. Different pitch?

2.00pm Play called off in Mohali. Hopefully the weather relents tomorrow. The good news is the forecast is brighter for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in Indore, Khadiwale and Khurana are looking untroubled. Dinda drifting onto the pads frequently. Maharashtra 26 for 0.

1.20pm Bengal in disarray. Karthik says: "Strange dismissal. Lahiri shoulders arms, Motwani dives to his left to collect, no one has any clue until Sanklecha, in his follow-through, sees the off bail on the ground. There was a a strong breeze blowing too. 110 for 8."

Make that nine down! Sarkar plays the shot of the day, an on-the-up cover drive off Fallah, and chips the next ball into mid-off's hands. 114 for 9.

Wickets falling quicker than we can type. Bengal all out for 114. Samad Fallah gets 7 for 58, wraps up the innings by bowling Paul first ball.

Sheshadri: "Disappointing. Isn't weather a factor at all in deciding venues. A different, related, point: neutral venues are a problem from the spectator angle. Would like to know how many are watching the Indore game. In the Karnataka-UP QF, on an average there were 1000-1500 spectators each day, including me.:-)"

The all-knowing Mohandas Menon tweets: "Bengal (114) their lowest vs Maharashtra in #RanjiTrophy Previous lowest: 143 at Eden Gardens, Calcutta in 1973/74."

1.10pm And another one for Maharashtra. From Karthik Krishnaswamy in Indore: "Samad Fallah has five as he bowls Arindam Das for 37 with a delivery similar to the one that Wasim Akram bowled to Chris Lewis. Slightly less movement, of course, and a lot less pace. Bengal 102 for 7. Fallah 15-3-46-5."

1.00pm Bengal sink to 94 for 6, as Dominic Joseph bowls Sandipan Das after the ball cuts in off the seam.

TNAmarkFromIndi: "PRC, and if they beat Bengal what would you say? That they beat a weak Bengal side who always had a weak batting line-up? We can all make excuses. If the absence of two players makes Mumbai a "half-strength" side, then they were always a rather brittle side."

12.20pm Mohali update: "The rain has stopped, hopefully we'll have play starting at 2pm.

PRC: "Good God! Seems like Maharashtra is the talk of the town. Reality check - They are a Group C team (read: RELEGATED to Group C), who have defeated a half-strength Mumbai. Period. My take on Maharashtra - They are the weakest of the 4 teams, and if I were at William Hill, I would go at 1000-1 for them to win the title. "

Have you read our interview with Laxmi Shukla yet? 'Wearing the Bengal jersey is my motivation'

12.00pm Lunch In Indore, Bengal are down to 83 for 5. Samad Fallah gets his fourth on the stroke of lunch, the ball rears at Laxmi Shukla from round the wicket, hits the shoulder of his bat and is caught at first slip.

avani: "Favorite is Karnataka. But conditions are not favorable to them. A loss of toss, rain delays, freezing cold, away match, opponent's home ground etc can make Punjab a surprise winner of this match! If that happens then it could be Maharastra all the way in the final. "

Sandesh.A.N: "Guess, who is the best performer of Pun Vs Kar match? Options a. rain b. fog c. chilling cold d. any player"

11.45am A big breakthrough for Maharashtra - Wriddhiman Saha has been caught behind for 29. Bengal 78 for 4.

11.20am Bengal have moved along to 53 for 3.

Ajay Varghese: "Guess the Rains will be the winners of this year Ranji Trophy. Howzzat for a change. But my wish is Karnataka take the trophy."

nakhat: "saha is looking rock solid. He has it six fours in 25."

11.00am Still no signs of play starting in Mohali.

Shekhar Mishra: "Ofcourse fav is karnataka because of their consistent winning performances but my gut feeling is that Maharashtra will clinch title in a thrilling final against Punjab."

Here's our feature today on Jammu & Kashmir cricket: J&K take the step up.

Rajeev: "On paper, Karnataka are favorites to win. But they are not used to this biting cold climate. Punjab has a huge advantage. Whoever wins this semis will win the finals too."

10.30am Samad Fallah on a hat-trick: First ball of his next over, spears one into the blockhole. Sudip Chatterjee lbw. Bengal 21 for 3. And nearly a hat-trick, a massive lbw appeal against Wriddhiman Saha, not given.

And that is a seriously eventful over from Fallah - six ball, four lbw appeals, one given, and one inside-edge falls just short of short leg. Bengal on the backfoot.

10.25am Maharashtra get their second wicket. Fallah strikes again, left-arm round, seventh over of his spell, wide of the crease and fires it in full, Easwaran is plumb. Bengal 21 for 2.

10.20am After 12 overs, Bengal are 16 for 1.

Discuss: Which of the four teams are favourites for the Ranji Trophy?

10.00am Bengal are 7 for 1 after seven overs, Arindam Das and Abhimanyu Easwaran in the middle.

Also, Dominic Joseph has replaced the injured Shrikant Mundhe. Read this story about Joseph: A bullet-maker turned bowler.

9.40am Not a great start to Koushik Ghosh's career, he's gone for 1. Samad Fallah gets the ball to shape away from the left-handed batsman, Ghosh nicks it through to Jadhav at first slip in the third over.

saravanan pandi: "looking forward for some updates on this match at real time..very happy both singh kings named in t20 probables this will boost up punjab..looking forward for action".

9.30am Update from Indore: Maharashtra have won the toss and are bowling against Bengal. Maharashtra's quick Shrikant Mundhe is out injured.

These are the playing XIs for Bengal: Arindam Das, SD Chatterjee, KB Ghosh, Sandipan Das, WP Saha†, AR Easwaran, LR Shukla*, SS Lahiri, SS Sarkar, SS Paul, AB Dinda. It's a debut for opener Koushik Ghosh.

Maharashtra: RH Motwani*†, KM Jadhav, AR Bawne, SD Atitkar, HH Khadiwale, VH Zol, CG Khurana, AA Darekar, AA Sanklecha, Domnic Joseph, SM Fallah.

9.15am Hello all and welcome to our coverage of the Mohali semifinal between hosts Punjab and Karnataka.

The big worry over this match has been about the weather, mainly the dense fog, but this morning it is the rain that is holding up play. There's been plenty of rain, and it is still drizzling, add in the freezing cold which will not help in drying the outfield. We could be in for a long delay here. There's light rain predicted for most of the day.

Some things for you to read to kill time as we wait for play to start. Here's our preview to this game: Fog, biting cold add to Mohali challenge. And here's our preview to the other semifinal: Maharashtra's batting stars gear for Bengal quicks.
