Karthik 92 rescues Tamil Nadu

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group A matches played on January 5, 2015

Tamil Nadu 208 for 5 (Karthik 92, Dinda 3-68) v Bengal
Scorecard
Dinesh Karthik rescued Tamil Nadu, and fell eight short of a hundred, after Ashok Dinda troubled the visitors with two early wickets on the first day in Kolkata. TN were 69 for 2 when Karthik walked out, but they lost two more wickets before reaching 100, before Karthik resisted with a fifty.
Bengal opted to field and Dinda first bowled Bharath Shankar for 18 in the fifth over, and then B Aparajith for 26 about 20 overs later. Before Karthik could put together a wild stand with Abhinav Mukund, Laxmi Shukla had the latter caught behind for 26 and medium-pacer Sourav Sarkar rocked them further by dismissing Baba Indrajith in the next over. TN were now 91 for 4.
Karthik combined with R Prasanna as the duo fought back with a stand of 105 runs and nearly took them to 200. Karthik scored a brisk 92 with 13 fours before he was also caught behind off Dinda. Prasanna's patient and unbeaten 35 with R Sathish's 10 not out took them to 208 for 5 at stumps.
Baroda 316 for 6 (Devdhar 146, Wakaskar 63, Chawla 3-100) v Uttar Pradesh
Scorecard
A hundred from Kedar Devdhar and fifties from Saurabh Wakaskar and Aditya Waghmode powered Baroda to 316 for 6 on the first day against Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow. Baroda were 246 for 1 at one point, but UP fought back with five wickets in the last 20 overs of the day.
Opting to bat, Baroda made a solid start as Wakaskar and Devdhar put on 145 for the opening wicket, and Devdhar then put on another 101 with Waghmode. Wakaskar scored 63 with eight fours and a six before he was bowled for 63 by Ali Murtaza. Devdhar went on to score his third first-class hundred, and Waghmode also didn't allow any relief for the UP bowlers as he struck 10 fours in his 53, but was run out by Amit Mishra. The UP bowlers, led by Piyush Chawla, siezed the momentum from there. Chawla first had Devdhar, who struck 22 fours, caught behind for 146 and trapped Yusuf Pathan lbw only four balls later. Ambati Rayudu added to Baroda's worries by giving his wicket to Mishra for 8 and Chawla struck again to have in-form Deepak Hooda stumped for 10 three overs later.
Baroda had lost four wickets for 31 runs in the last 12 overs of the day and Chawla ended the day with 3 for 100 from 26 overs.
