Wriddhiman Saha's ninth first-class hundred powered Bengal to a strong position on the first day of their Ranji clash against Jammu & Kashmir in Kolkata. At stumps, Bengal were well-placed at 312 for 7, with Saha still unbeaten on 129. It was however J&K who made the early running in the game, as Bengal, opting to bat, were dragged back to 68 for 4 following two wickets apiece from Ram Dayal and Parvez Rasool. Bengal, though, counterattacked with a 144-run partnership between Saha and Laxmi Shukla, who made 72. Bengal lost three more wickets towards the end of the day, including Shukla, but with Saha in good touch, the hosts will be pile on more runs in their quest to secure a first outright victory this season.
Tamil Nadu 53 for 2 (Abhinav Mukund 26*) trail Uttar Pradesh 182 (Alam 47, Rahil 5-63) by 129 runs
Scorecard
A five-wicket haul from the left-arm spinner Rahil Shah helped Tamil Nadul bowl Uttar Pradesh out for 182 in Chennai. Rahil collected 5 for 63 to wreck Uttar Pradesh's middle and lower order, as the visitors folded inside 75 overs. Arish Alam top-scored with 47 and while a few other batsmen made starts, none could really chip in with a meaningful score. Apart from Rahil, Malolan Rangarajan took 2 for 39, while V Shankar, M Prabhu and Suresh Kumar snared a scalp each. Tamil Nadu, however, lost a wicket at the start of the innings and one again towards the end of the day to finish with 53 for 2.
Madhya Pradesh 270 for 7 (Shrivastava 91, Ojha 54, Gopal 3-48) v Karnataka
Scorecard
Fifties from Aditya Shrivastava, Naman Ojha and Harpreet Singh guided Madhya Pradesh to 270 for 7 against Karnataka in Indore. MP, opting to bat, lost Jalaj Saxena early, but Shrivastava put up big stands with Anand Bais and Ojha to lift the team close to the 200-run mark. Shrivastava's dismissal for 91 in the 64th over triggered two more quick wickets to peg MP back to 186 for 5, but Harpreet's run-a-ball 53, and 59-run association with Shubham Sharma helped the hosts once again wrest the advantage. Harpreet stroked eight fours and a six during his knock, but was dismissed towards the end of the day. Shreyas Gopal was the pick of Karnataka's bowlers, with returns of 3 for 48.
Baroda 271 for 7 (Devdhar 80, Nandi 3-68) v Railways
Scorecard
A timely 80 from Kedar Devdhar guided Baroda to 271 for 7 on the first day against Railways in Delhi. Baroda's innings was built on a 107-run, second-wicket partnership between Devdhar and the captain Aditya Waghmode (41). Baroda were briefly held back by a three-wicket burst from Arnab Nandi (3 for 68), but handy contributions from Yusuf Pathan (38), Irfan Pathan (30) and Pinal Shah (26*) down the order meant the team would go into day two eyeing a sizable first-innings total.
