Ranji Trophy Super League - 4th quarter final

Tamil Nadu v Bengal

Tamil Nadu won by 8 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final between Tamil Nadu and Bengal. We are coming live from the Cricinfo offices in Bangalore, thanks finally to a Ranji match finally being telecast live. It's a shame none of the previous ones have been telecast live. There have been quite a few interesting ones - the one between Delhi and Orissa at the Feroze Shah Kotla being one of the most incredible. Delhi just about held on that time, on a monster of a wicket - wet, green and misbehaving. That match didn't last two days, but one presumes that the Chinnaswamy Stadium is far removed from such conditions - this one seems a batting beauty, like other wickets throughout the season in Bangalore have been.

A word on the pitch from VB Chandrasekar: "Not a great deal of moisture. Superficial moisture on the top, and a little bit of grass. Will be good for batting, the captain winning the toss will look to bat first and hope that their batsmen bat till the cows come home."

LR Shukla has won the toss, and as expected decided to bat.

Right Balaji goes right-arm over to Rohan Banarjee

0.1

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, well pitched, a bit of shape into the left-hand batsman, defended back

0.2

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, pitched up again, but no shape this time, going with the angle, and left alone by Banerjee

three slips and a gully, a square point in place

0.3

Balaji to Banerjee, 1 run, straighter this time, a bit of swing, Banerjee helps it down the legs to fine leg. Off the mark

Arindam Das, playing his 50th first-class game, is on strike now. Similar field for the right-hander

0.4

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, another pitched-up delivery, it's pretty straight, and defended a touch loosely

0.5

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, thrown up wide, swinging away, but Das has nothing to do with it

0.6

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, the best ball of the over, fullish, around off, and straightening a bit, defended with an open face by Das

End of over 1 (1 run) Bengal 1/0
Arindam Das    0* (3b)      L Balaji    1-0-1-0
RB Banerjee    1* (3b)

P Amarnath to open the bowling along with Balaji

1.1

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, starts with a length ball, going across, and defended with open face towards point

1.2

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, down the leg side, and left alone by Banerjee

1.3

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, pitched up this time, no threatening pace, and played down towards mid-off, 123ks

1.4

Amarnath to Banerjee, 1 run, pitched-up delivery, square-driven, and a diving stop from C Suresh at points saves three runs there

1.5

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, a touch of swing, but the ball is too wide for Das, of short frame, to reach it even if he wanted to

1.6

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, a bit of bounce there, but it is wide again, and Das lets it go easily. The token oohs and aahs emenated

End of over 2 (1 run) Bengal 2/0
Arindam Das    0* (5b)      P Amarnath    1-0-1-0
RB Banerjee    2* (7b)

2.1

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, good carry there, but this one was angled across again, and Banerjee lets that go through to Karthik, the Tamil Nadu captain and wicketkeeper

2.2

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, length ball, within stumps this time, making Banerjee play, and he defends it towards mid-on

2.3

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, a length ball angling across Banerjee, who plays it with an open face towards slips. Soft hands mean the ball bounces well before reaching the cordon

2.4

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, tries a bouncer then, fairly accurate, off stump line, shoulder high, Banerjee decides to let it go at the last moment

2.5

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, pitches it up, no swing again, and goes across the left-hand batsman. Left alone easily

already Balaji goes round the wicket

2.6

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, this is a straight wide delivery, and the batsman has got nothing to do with it

End of over 3 (maiden) Bengal 2/0
RB Banerjee    2* (13b)      L Balaji    2-1-1-0
Arindam Das    0* (5b)

. A nice lazy morning the batsmen are enjoying so far. The bowlers haven't made them play at all

3.1

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, another wide one, and let alone by Das

slips chirping a lot, "Make him play" is the cry

3.2

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, make him play he does with a full delivery, but no swing there. Bas still manages to defend it with the inside half of the bat

3.3

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, wide again, and left alone easily

3.4

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, tries a short one, not much bounce this time, and is off target, Das lets it go

3.5

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, this is a game between Tamil Nadu players only, another short delivery, wide outside off, the bowlers are not involving the batsmen at all

3.6

Amarnath to Arindam Das, FOUR, over-pitched this time, on the pads too, and since there is no swing, Das can play it easily with a closed face through midwicket for the first boundary of the morning

End of over 4 (4 runs) Bengal 6/0
Arindam Das    4* (11b 1x4)      P Amarnath    2-0-5-0
RB Banerjee    2* (13b)

4.1

Balaji to Banerjee, 1 run, sharp single, Balaji on the stumps this time, Banerjee plays it down with soft hands towards the covers and runs. Good call, because it went just wide of the fielder

4.2

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, into the pads this time, played straight towards square leg

4.3

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, this was straight, no deviation, fullish, played right back with a straight bat to the bowler. Not much pace with Balaji either... early 120ks

4.4

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, big shout, but the lack of swing means this couldn't have been out, this one was fullish, beat Das's bat with the angle, but it was surely angling down the legside

4.5

Balaji to Arindam Das, no run, a touch shorter, and defended back towards the bowler

4.6

Balaji to Arindam Das, 1 run, better aim this time, on the stumps, but the lack of swing means Das can work it to just wide of mid-on and take an easy single

End of over 5 (2 runs) Bengal 8/0
Arindam Das    5* (16b 1x4)      L Balaji    3-1-3-0
RB Banerjee    3* (14b)

Off to the two teams now: Tamil Nadu, comprehensive in their march to top of Group B, and Bengal, who have shown enough desperation to win most of their matches in the Plate League and come back to the Super League. On pre-season standings, this is a match between a top-six team and one placed at 14th or 15th position. WV Raman, Tamil Nadu's coach, shows the other side too. "It [the new format] is good because there's every chance that a good cricketing team might have slipped down to Plate," Raman says. "It has happened with Karnataka before, and now with Bengal. Once that happens it denies you things for two years. If a good side has gone down due to whatever reasons, there is a fantastic chance for them to come back immediately." Well, we will see how far this works as a competition, over the next four days.

5.1

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, better direction from Amarnath, just outside off, making Das play, who defends it towards cover

5.2

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, good looking shot, pitched up at 122ks, and driven straight back, Amarnath gets down in time to prevent any runs

5.3

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, looking for swing, getting straighter, but it is another straight delivery, and defended easily into the leg side

5.4

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, on the stumps now, just short of a length, Das still plays it off the front foot, and defends it to mid-on

5.5

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, fuller, a touch of inward movement, and defended back by Das

5.6

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, fuller, just outside off, and played into the covers

End of over 6 (maiden) Bengal 8/0
Arindam Das    5* (22b 1x4)      P Amarnath    3-1-5-0
RB Banerjee    3* (14b)

Already there is a problem with the ball. It has gone out of shape, and we are getting another ball already. The quality of balls in domestic cricket has been quite a concern, with as many as five changes going on in a day, at times

It gives one time, though, to chalk out the team lists.

Teams Bengal: Rohan Banerjee, Arindam Das, Wriddhiman Saha, Manoj Tiwary, LR Shukla, Dibyendu Chakrabarty, Avik Chowdhury, Ritam Kundu, Sourav Sarkar, Ashok Dinda, Ranadeb Bose

Tamil Nadu: M Vijay, A Mukund, S Badrinath, Dinesh Karthik, S Vidyut, Suresh Kumar, R Ashwin, C Suresh, L Balaji, C Ganapathy, P Amarnath

It is appalling, this change of ball. It has taken five minutes early on, and the ball hasn't even been hit around in the first six overs. Only one boundary has been scored so far. Are they using aluminum bats?

6.1

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, on target, from round the stumps, length ball, on the off stump, and defended easily

6.2

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, pitched up, driving length, no movement, but too wide to interest Banerjee

6.3

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, back over the wickets, another length ball, on the leg stump this time, and played into the leg side with soft hands

6.4

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, pitched upper this time, Banerjee is on the front foot to defend it

6.5

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, the first time a batsman has been beaten, good line, staring off stump, making batsman play, and leaving him ever so slightly. What's more, it kicked up a bit too. Lucky not to get the edge

6.6

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, a wide floater, and left alone. Not a good follow-up delivery

End of over 7 (maiden) Bengal 8/0
RB Banerjee    3* (20b)      L Balaji    4-2-3-0
Arindam Das    5* (22b 1x4)

C Ganapathy to replace the ineffective P Amarnath

7.1

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, and he starts wide too, and Das lets this pitched-up delivery go its way

two slips and a gully for Ganapathy's gentle medium-pace

7.2

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, wide and left alone by Das again, no bounce either

7.3

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, he gets closer to the stumps, and this length delivery is defended with soft hands

7.4

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, short and wide, Das trying to cut without any footwork, and plays all over it. No bounce again

7.5

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, wide, fuller, and Das doesn't go for it this time

Bowling at 120ks and thereabouts. "Shut up and bounce," he must be saying. Not that it will have the Shilpa Shetty effect, though

7.6

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, short and wide, square-driven, but C Suresh is alert again. He is a lively fielder at point

End of over 8 (maiden) Bengal 8/0
Arindam Das    5* (28b 1x4)      C Ganapathy    1-1-0-0
RB Banerjee    3* (20b)

and again, the ball is becoming a problem. Out of shape it looks, and we will get another ball change. Seven overs, one boundary, mostly left-alones, and we are changing the ball for the second time. What a shame.

A brand-new ball is being scuffed up now by the umpires. Is the BCCI watching and doing something about the quality of the balls? These can't be properly dried if they keep going out of shape so soon. The sandpaper is out, too. VB Chandrasekar is not the man to miss a funny moment if he sees one. "The batsmen have defended the ball out of shape," he says on air.

8.1

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, short, angling across, and left alone. Good carry for this, Karthik takes it chest-high

So Amarnath has got a change of end

8.2

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, overpitched, wide, driven square, straight to point

8.3

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, shorter, angling across, chopped down, it's safe

8.4

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, on the legs, turned away, but can't find the gap

8.5

Amarnath to Banerjee, 1 run, almost played on, should I, should I not?, this delivery was straighter, Banerjee - almost by habit - looked to leave it, and while shouldering arms he got an edge towards fine leg. Awefully close to the stumps

8.6

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, length ball, off-stump line, Das plays it off the back foot, but gaps are not to be found

End of over 9 (1 run) Bengal 9/0
Arindam Das    5* (29b 1x4)      P Amarnath    4-1-6-0
RB Banerjee    4* (25b)

9.1

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, some carry for Ganapathy, but angling across, and left alone. This one bounced because it pitched on the seam

9.2

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, down the legs, Banerjee tries to play at it, and fails to do so

9.3

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, wide, short, there for the cut, and Banerjee obliges, only to find C Suresh alert there

9.4

Ganapathy to Banerjee, 1 run, another length ball, angling across, playing with soft hands, and taking a quick single to cover

9.5

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, wide, nicely left alone again

9.6

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, widish, out of boredom, das plays at this one, straight to point though, and gets no runs

End of over 10 (1 run) Bengal 10/0
Arindam Das    5* (31b 1x4)      C Ganapathy    2-1-1-0
RB Banerjee    5* (29b)

First 10 overs gone, and how exciting they have been. A run a over, wide deliveries, a host of left-alones. This is taking domestic cricket back to the type. And two token ball changes have already happened

10.1

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, full, angled across the left-hander, who plays it towards mid-off

10.2

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, on the pads this time, and he turns his wrists on it to play it towards the leg side

10.3

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, overpitched, wide, and Banerjee goes for the square-drive, but can't beat the ever-alert C Suresh at point

10.4

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, short of length, down the legs, tries to flick it, but can only manage to play it down towards the keeper

10.5

Amarnath to Banerjee, 3 runs, over-pitched, and finally Banerjee goes straighter, misses C Suresh, and gets three for the drive through the covers

10.6

Amarnath to Arindam Das, no run, length ball, on the stumps, played straight back t the bowler

End of over 11 (3 runs) Bengal 13/0
Arindam Das    5* (32b 1x4)      P Amarnath    5-1-9-0
RB Banerjee    8* (34b)

11.1

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, full, straight, Banerjee plants the front foot down, and defends him as if a spinner

11.2

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, he draws him into the shot this time, starts off stump, angling away just enough to miss the edge of a poking batsman

11.3

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, on the pads this time, and played towards midwicket

11.4

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, nice targets this time, length ball, starts around leg, and minimal angle to end on the off-stump line. At least he is making Banerjee play

11.5

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, pitching within a stumps, a touch up, and then ending just outside the off line, played with the bat face turning

11.6

Ganapathy to Banerjee, 1 run, straighter, a bit too straight, and helped easily off the pads to fine leg

End of over 12 (1 run) Bengal 14/0
RB Banerjee    9* (40b)      C Ganapathy    3-1-2-0
Arindam Das    5* (32b 1x4)

R Ashwin, the offspinner, on as early as 13th over. And we will see a lot of spin in this match.

12.1

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, nice flight, good line on the leg stump, a hint of break away, and defended back

12.2

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, fuller this time, Banerjee is down on front foot, and defends it easily. There is turn for Ashwin

12.3

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, overpitched this time, Banerjee drives, but straight to mid-off

12.4

Ashwin to Banerjee, 1 run, another drivable delivery, he drives it straighter of mid-off, and Balaji gets in a good dive to save the boundary

Interesting. As Balaji dived, his cap came off and the ball went into it. Should there be penalty runs? Well, he didn't actually field it with the cap. The ball was almost stationery when it entered the cap. Interpretations.

12.5

Ashwin to Arindam Das, no run, a touch shorter, straighter one, and defended easily

12.6

Ashwin to Arindam Das, no run, fuller, and dead-batted

End of over 13 (1 run) Bengal 15/0
Arindam Das    5* (34b 1x4)      R Ashwin    1-0-1-0
RB Banerjee    10* (44b)

13.1

Ganapathy to Banerjee, 1 run, short and wide, cut uppishly, and this bounces well short of C Suresh at point. He does well despite the bad bounce

13.2

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, 1 run, angling into the pads, and Das turns this length ball around the corner

round the wicket, to the left-hander Banerjee

13.3

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, short of a length, gets good bounce this time, as this makes him play away from his body

13.4

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, wide, full, Banerjee goes for the drive, but this is too far away from him, and the bat face turns by the time he reaches the line of the ball

13.5

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, fuller, angling in, but judged well and left alone

13.6

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, short, angling into the ribs, tucking the batsman up, but at 121ks he gives him enough time to wait at the back foot and play it down

End of over 14 (2 runs) Bengal 17/0
RB Banerjee    11* (49b)      C Ganapathy    4-1-4-0
Arindam Das    6* (35b 1x4)

14.1

Ashwin to Arindam Das, 1 run, too straight, pitching middle, turning in further, and helped round the corner

good to see Ashwin flighting the ball, and bowling at around 80ks

14.2

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, overpitched this time, a bit too close to the pitch is Benerjee, and plays it straight to mid-off

14.3

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, that's a ripper, flighted, drawing the batsman forward, sharp turn and bounce, beats him all ends, Karthik whips the bails off, but a second too late, and third umpire rules him not out

14.4

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, nicely flighted again, foesn;t get it to dip this time, so Banerjee judges the length correctly and plays it straight to mid-off

14.5

Ashwin to Banerjee, no run, straighter one this time, quicker too, and defended

14.6

Ashwin to Banerjee, 2 runs, fulle delivery, and played with soft hands and open face for single past gully

End of over 15 (3 runs) Bengal 20/0
RB Banerjee    13* (54b)      R Ashwin    2-0-4-0
Arindam Das    7* (36b 1x4)

we are down to one slip and one gully now

15.1

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, no run, there was some in-swing here, but the length delivery swung too much and was going down the leg

15.2

Ganapathy to Arindam Das, OUT, finally Ganapathy is accurate enough, and the late inward movement from just outside off beats the bat, and hits him straight in front. But the ball was rising, hit him just over the knee roll of the back leg, and height could have been the only issue. Umpire Hariharan was fairly convinced, though. First wicket for TN

Arindam Das lbw b Ganapathy 7 (71m 38b 1x4 0x6) SR: 18.42

Match State: Drinks

It's drinks too, the first break of the match. Remember the first session in Ranji Trophy is two-and-a-half hours long, to make sure they get in their overs through before the light worsens in certain parts of the country

15.3

Ganapathy to Saha, 1 run

15.4

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, wide, angled across, left alone

15.5

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, wide again, easily left alone

15.6

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, swing again, starting on off, and moving away, left alone by Banerjee.

Interesting. Very interesting. The ball is reversing. Replays showed the Das dismissal featured movement towards the shine. Worth noting is that the umpires tampered with the ball to get it to the same state, when they changed the ball and a got a brand new one as replacement

End of over 16 (1 run) Bengal 21/1
RB Banerjee    13* (57b)      C Ganapathy    5-1-5-1
WP Saha    1* (1b)

Karthik has seen the swing, and taken off the impressive-looking Ashwin off. Amarnath comes back

16.1

Amarnath to Saha, no run, starts off wide again, and no problems for Saha to let it go

16.2

Amarnath to Saha, no run, wide again, just holding its line, and Saha shoulders arms again

16.3

Amarnath to Saha, no run, short and wide, and left alone easily. Make him play, is the cry among the slip cordon

16.4

Amarnath to Saha, no run, obviously Amarnath hasn't heard it, it's wide, full, and Das again felxes his front leg to cover the off stump, and then shoulders arms

16.5

Amarnath to Saha, no run, wide and short, and Saha is not having to play

16.6

Amarnath to Saha, no run, full but wide, and again Saha lets it go. What an over, six left-alones

End of over 17 (maiden) Bengal 21/1
WP Saha    1* (7b)      P Amarnath    6-2-9-0
RB Banerjee    13* (57b)

17.1

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, Ganapathy gets reverse again. Fullish, starts off stump line, and swings away, left alone

17.2

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, this is closer to off stump, and left alone again. Fielders get excited, but it is not close

17.3

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, fuller, closer to the stumps, and Banerjee defends it - 90th dot ball in 17.3 overs

17.4

Ganapathy to Banerjee, no run, make it 91, fullish, on the off stump, and played into the covers

17.5

Ganapathy to Banerjee, 1 run, gets too straight this time, and an easy single off the pads for Banerjee

17.6

Ganapathy to Saha, no run, wide and short again, Saha agains let it go. Is it a TN plan to not let Saha get bat on ball?

End of over 18 (1 run) Bengal 22/1
WP Saha    1* (8b)      C Ganapathy    6-1-6-1
RB Banerjee    14* (62b)

18.1

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, shortish, angled across, but too close to cut, and he doesn't get the power in

18.2

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, nice and full, drivable length, and he plays it straight to mid-off

18.3

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, on the stumps, shortish, going across, and Banerjee defends it off the front foot

18.4

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, short rising delivery, on target too, but again only 120ks, and easily played down off the back foot. He had ages to play it

18.5

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, very short, and down the leg, spongy bounce, and Banerjee lets Karthik earn his match fee

18.6

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, good looking shot, full delivery, driven towards covers, but straight to the fielder, R Ashwin

End of over 19 (maiden) Bengal 22/1
RB Banerjee    14* (68b)      P Amarnath    7-3-9-0
WP Saha    1* (8b)

19.1

Ganapathy to Saha, FOUR, now they make Saha play, and does he hit it? it's a gentle delivery outside off, and Saha drive sit on the up, through the covers

19.2

Ganapathy to Saha, no run, tries a bouncer, but it is a fruitless exercise if you bowl at 120 on this pitch, and this one doesn't trouble Saha

19.3

Ganapathy to Saha, no run, this one is more accurate, tucking him up, but again the shorter one doesn't have enough pace to trouble him

19.4

Ganapathy to Saha, no run, thrown up wide, sucker delivery, Saha lunges, looks for the drive, realises he is not there, closes the face on the delivery to keep the ball down

19.5

Ganapathy to Saha, 3 runs, another wide, full delivery, another lunge, but this time he recovers well, plays it with soft hands and open face to pierce the cover field

goes round the stumps to the left-hander

19.6

Ganapathy to Banerjee, 1 run, overpitched, just outside off, driven just wide of Balaji at mid-off, and a quick single completed

End of over 20 (8 runs) Bengal 30/1
RB Banerjee    15* (69b)      C Ganapathy    7-1-14-1
WP Saha    8* (13b 1x4)

20.1

Amarnath to Banerjee, no run, length ball, starting within stumps, angling across a bit, and defended with open face

20.2

Amarnath to Banerjee, 2 runs, too straight, and it's an easy length to turn away into the leg-side field

20.3

Amarnath to Banerjee, 2 runs, finally Banerjee gets through the off-side field, not cleanly though. The half-volley was hit cleanly, but S Vidyut, at cover, made a half stop and saved two

20.4

Amarnath to Banerjee, 1 run, slower fulltoss, 103ks, but easily helped towards the fine leg

20.5

Amarnath to Saha, no run, short, within the stumps, and Saha waits and waits and then defneds it towards mid-on

20.6

Amarnath to Saha, no run, nice bouncer this time, moving in after pitching outside off, and Saha does well to sway out of the line, as opposed to ducking right away

End of over 21 (5 runs) Bengal 35/1
WP Saha    8* (15b 1x4)      P Amarnath    8-3-14-0
RB Banerjee    20* (73b)

Balaji comes back to bowl from BEML End. Didn't create any great impression in his first spell of 4-2-3-0

21.1

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, good line here, starts middle-stump line, and going away with the angle. Banerjee judges well, and lets it go

21.2

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, straighter, making the batsman play, and he does it towards the leg. No gap there

21.3

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, way down the leg, moving further away, would have been a good delivery for the right-hand batsman

21.4

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, starts wide of off this wide, and is goes further with the angle. Banerjee leaves alone easily

21.5

Balaji to Banerjee, no run, there is a body blow, short but this one doesn't angle away, and hits Banerjee in the the forearm

21.6

Balaji to Banerjee, FOUR, lovely response from Banerjee, this is wide and thrown up, and Banerjee drives it through extra cover for - finally - his first boundary

End of over 22 (4 runs) Bengal 39/1

Praveen writes in: "With all the talk of generating public interest in Domestic Cricket Matches, wonder how it makes sense in holding these important matches in neutral venues." One can also look at it this way: Neutral venues are brought in to get sporting wickets, and knowing the kind of dead wicket that Chinnaswamy has had to offer this season, why perform necrophilia?

24.1

Amarnath to Saha, no run, angled into the pads, and defended

24.2

Amarnath to Saha, FOUR, short and wide, this time he plays at it, and half-cuts-half-drives it for four through point... no need to get in line or close to it there

24.3

Amarnath to Saha, no run, shortish delivery, on the stumps, defended off the back foot

24.4

Amarnath to Saha, no run, wide again, Saha is bored of letting them go, and again looks to guide it through point, but C Suresh does well

24.5

Amarnath to Saha, OUT, the only way Banerjee could have got out! Full, bludgeoning straight drive from Saha, Amarnath gets a finger to it, the ball deviates to hit the stumps at the non-striker's end, and Banerjee is found backing up. The replays show a clear deviation when the ball passed Amarnath's out-stretched hand

Madhu has a point worth our while. "The authorities seriously need to have a look at the format and the points system. it becomes a complete farce when a quarterfinal is played over four days and clearly the teams are just looking at a first innings lead to go through. Bengal's rate of 1.80 on a flat track signifies their complete lack of interest in trying to win this game. And then the critics wonder why nobody is interested in domestic cricket. i've seen paint dry with more entertainment value."

And that's lunch on the first day of the first televised Ranji match this season. Decent over-rate given there were two ball changes. But the batting has been slow.
