Michael Bevan, the former Australia middle-order batsman, has been named coach of the Orissa team for the next season of the Ranji Trophy. Earlier this month, Bevan was also appointed coach of the Kings XI Punjab team for the IPL.

"Bevan has, in principle, agreed to render his service from October 2011 to February 2012," Orissa Cricket Association Secretary Asirbad Behera told reporters in Cuttack. Orissa had a disappointing Ranji campaign in the 2010-11 season, finishing second from bottom in Group B after losing two of their six games and drawing four.

"I will remain accountable to OCA for the performance of the team," Bevan said, adding he was keen on working towards the overall development of cricket in the state.

appointing coaches at the higher level that too for a couple of months isn't going to be of much help to odisha cricket.. except maybe passing a few tips around...being an odiya and having seen the structure in the state, what needs to be done is putting in place a system which is competitive and well organised..school cricket, district and so on...roping in some experienced Indian coaches for age group cricket and division level, having a professional state cricket academy, bringing in curators like daljit singh etc are steps which oca should work on..anyways its a positive step..GO ODISHA..

Bevan can do wonders with the Orissa team. It has couple of good bowlers in the form of Debasis and Basant Mohanty. Orissa has batters who can do well. Remember Parida the MoM in Ranji Final is a product of this team. Who expected Rajastan to lift the ranji cup ? If Rajastan can do well then why can not Orissa ! Being an Oriya I thank Bevan for the interest for a lesser known team.

Sounds great for Orissa although I am not sure about Bevan's coaching credentials. May be Orissa should try to get Parida back.

is this a trend of things to come ? until very recently no one bothered about the state of Ranji cricket and now we see states appointing foreign coaches... well, if the trend continues, the state of first class cricket in india can only improve.. but i sincerely hope that the players (and administrators) learn a few good skills and basic values from proven performers like Bevan.

  • sudeepmishra on January 17, 2011, 20:53 GMT
