Chinthaka bowls ICBT to narrow win

A round-up of the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals matches played on July 23, 2014

A four-wicket haul from Parussalla Chinthaka helped ICBT Campus beat Karachi University by one run in a last-ball finish in Aston Rowant. Chasing 115, Karachi were 54 for 2 after 11 overs when Chinthaka came on and took two wickets in his first over. He then removed opener Haris Ali, who had made 52, to leave Karachi needing 28 from 17 balls with four wickets in hand. When Chinthaka began the final over, they needed 15. Boundaries from Mir Hamza and Mohammad Ubaid helped them get 13, but they lost two wickets, including their eighth off the last ball, when Ubaid was run out going for a third to tie the scores.
Having been sent in, ICBT had lost their first three wickets inside the third over before Anushka Perera and VIT Madhushan put on 40 for the fourth wicket. It was to remain the highest partnership of the innings, with none of their batsmen reaching double figures. Hamza was Karachi's most successful bowler, with figures of 3 for 19.
Leeds/Bradford MCCU shot University of Liberal Arts out for 69 to romp to a 120-run win in Wormsley. Having chosen to bat, Leeds/Bradford lost an early wicket before Nick Gubbins and Chris Wakefield put their innings back on track with a 54-run second-wicket partnership. Wakefield and Charles Roebuck then added 51 in 32 balls before Tanmoy Roy struck twice in one over. That didn't dent Leeds/Bradford's progress, though, as Liam Watkinson smashed an unbeaten 22-ball 40 to propel them to a total of 189 for 5.
Liberal Arts' chase never got off the ground. Only one of their batsmen - wicketkeeper Izal Khan - got into double figures, and he remained unbeaten on 34 when they lost their final wicket, with nine balls still remaining. All six Leeds/Bradford bowlers picked up wickets, with Liam Watkinson and David Foster bagging two each.
University of New South Wales held their nerve to trigger a late collapse and beat Rizvi Mumbai by three runs to finish top of Group 1. Chasing 111, Rizvi needed 13 from their last two overs with five wickets in hand, but ended up losing four of their wickets, including three in three balls in the final over bowled by Thomas Rogers, the last of them a run-out. It left the No. 11 Prasad Patil needing to score four runs to force a Super Over but he could only manage a single.
Rizvi had begun their chase well, with openers Kunal Dubey and Akhil Rajput putting on 51 in 10.3 overs. They then lost their way, however, with their first three wickets falling in the space of five balls, two of them to offspinner Gordon Atallah. Gaurav Jathar's 25 put Rizvi's chase back on track, but his wicket - which left his team needing 21 from 21 balls with five wickets in hand - precipitated their late collapse.
Sent in to bat, University of NSW had begun poorly, losing their first three wickets inside four overs. Only three of their batsmen got into double figures, Ethan Leten top-scoring with 32, as they moved to a total of 110 for 8. Rizvi wicketkeeper Sumit Ghadigaonkar featured in three stumpings, two of them off Patil, who finished with figures of 3 for 19.
Assupol TUKS finished Group 2 with three wins from three matches, after beating Jamaica Inter-Collegiate Sports Association by 56 runs thanks to Aiden Markram's all-round efforts. Opening the batting after Assupol chose to bat, Markram laid the platform for their total of 178 for 5 with a 56-ball 76, which included eight fours. Markram shared stands of 75 with Johan Wessels for the third wicket and 44 for the fourth wicket with Heinrich Klaasen, before Sean Dickson applied the finishing touches with an unbeaten 19 off 9 balls.
Oraine Williams kept the chase going for Jamaica ICSA with a 38-ball 55, but no one else really contributed, with every batsman down from No. 5 failing to get into double figures. Markram, who opened the bowling as well, took three wickets for Assupol, as did fellow offspinner David Mogotlane.
