The second son of the 7th Earl of Sandwich, he entered the Royal Navy at the age of 12 and rose to become a read admiral. A keen allround sportsman, he played cricket for the MCC, and also hunted and rode and sailed. His godmother was Queen Victoria and King Edward VII was among his closest friends.
