John Sewell was a middle-order batsman who played for Middlesex between 1863 and 1867 with little success other than a remarkable innings of 166, his only fifty-plus score, against Surrey at The Oval in 1866. He emigrated to South Africa in the autumn of 1867 and played no first-class cricket thereafter.
