Ian Prior was a wicketkeeper-batsman who was a long-serving player and captain for Suffolk for a decade and a half. He played a few times for Essex 2nd XI early in his career before becoming an ever-present in the Suffolk side where he usually opened the batting. In all he played 81 matches for the county, scoring 4841 runs at 34.57 and taking 148 catches and 40 stumpings. He retired in 1968 but carried on playing club cricket for Old Ipswichians. He made a one-off comeback in 1975 to help Suffolk win the inaugural NCA inter-county cup final. Prior was a Rugby Union full-back for Ipswich and Suffolk until injury took its toll. A teacher by profession, he spent the bulk of his career at Ipswich School where he coached the XI and taught Latin and maths.
