TEAMS
Jack Massie, the son of Australian Test captain Hugh Massie, played 16 matches for NSW as a tall fast left-arm bowler, taking 59 wickets at 18.66 in 1912-13, his first full season. The next season he again was to the fore, his 37 wickets coming at a cost of 16.32. By the time he joined the army, ruling out any games in 1914-15, he had represented his state at athletics, cricket, rowing and rugby, and was also the amateur heavyweight boxing champion. When he landed at Gallipoli in 1915 he tied a scarlet rag to his right arm so it would be a clear target for the Turkish marksmen and not his bowling arm. It made no difference. Grenade fragments shattered his left shoulder and ended his sporting career.
Martin Williamson
Robert John Allwright Massie was, as a 6 ft 4 in fastish left-hander for New South Wales, regarded as Australia's bowler of the future in 1914. Unhappily a wound received while on Army service during the First World War ended his cricket career. He represented New South Wales at cricket, Rugby football, athletics and rowing and was also amateur boxing champion of the State.
