Australia in South Africa Test Series - 2nd Test

South Africa v Australia

Australia won by 175 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

We have a dead ball straightaway, Steyn bowls but the fielder at the boundary wasn't ready

9.57: We're just moments away from the start. Time to grab a cup of coffee. This is Kanishkaa, your commentator for today. Raju's on scoring. The players are out.

9.55: Coming back to Hot Spot, I'm surprised it wasn't implemented earlier. It's surprising the referrals system is still in 'trial'. All such experiments should have been conducted at the domestic level before even daring to take it to the Tests. There are too many holes in this system and I'm not a big fan of it yet.

Brydon: The crowd's a little thin this morning. If it wasn't for a few large groups of schoolchildren, the stands would be even emptier.

9.50: SA are under pressure to win this and stay in the series. They're no strangers to this situation though. Over the last two seasons, they have made it a habit to come from behind and win a three Test series after losing the first Test. They will chase a unique hat-trick here.

9.45 am local: Brydon Coverdale's on his first overseas tour with Australia and he's been busy sending us stories. Read his preview for today's game.

He informs me that we're going to have a minute's silence for the horrific Lahore attack. All the players from both teams, and the umpires are wearing black armbands.

Pitch: There's a lot of grass on the surface, typical of Kingsmead which offers a lot of assistance to the fast bowlers. Interesting though that Australia have opted to bat. With the fierce heat, the moisture could dry up very quickly and open up the cracks as the match progresses. It's always a positive move though.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and they will bat first. Like we said earlier, both teams are unchanged. There were doubts about Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle and both turned out ok this morning.

Weather: You wouldn't want to plonk yourself at Kingsmead right now because the humidity is a not-so-funny 83%. There's also a 30% chance of afternoon showers. At the moment, it's blazing hot.

9.30 am local: The other big news is the Hot Spot trial for the referrals system. Hot Spot uses two infra-red cameras positioned at either end of the ground. These cameras sense and measure heat from friction generated by a collision, such as ball on pad, ball on bat, ball on ground or ball on glove. A black-and-white negative image of the incident is generated into a computer which shows the ball's precise point of contact. For more, click here.

9.15 am local: Good morning and thank you for joining us for the opening day of the second Test between South Africa and Australia in Durban. Let's cut straight to the news doing the rounds this morning. Both teams have retained their line-ups from the first Test. It's nice and sunny at Kingsmead and that makes for a promising start.

We'll bring you news of the toss soon.

Australia all the way and the junior partner has had a very satisfying session. A good toss to win, the pitch has bounce but not enough seam movement and the Australians have capitalised. SA didn't bowl too many short deliveries to Hughes and each time they gave him width or pitched it too straight, he slammed them away. He looked jittery in Kallis' first over but otherwise it's been an impeccable performance by him. It's going to be hard work in the heat. Join us in 30 minutes.

Ahmed: "You got to feel for Jaques. He waited all his life for langer to retire. Once he did, he got his chance. Then got injured. Then waited for hayden to retire. Once Hayden retired. selectors went for Hughes. With an average of 47 with 3 centuries. 11 test old Jaques might never play for Australia again."

Dave: "With all the turmoil going on in the world these days, seeing the Aussies dominate like this is somewhat calming... that at least in some things, all is right with the world"

Ange: "This truly does show that there is a lot more depth and talent in Australia cricket compared with all the other countries."

We're back after lunch. Hughes should reach his century at some point. He was let off twice in the first Test but no such errors here. And by the way, we haven't had any referrals so far today. Dale Steyn to start off. The two slips are wide apart

28.1

Harris to Hughes, 1 run, that's a referral, he tries to sweep him and the ball thuds onto the pads, Harris appeals and Smith wants to go upstairs after the appeal is turned down, interestingly the umpire calls it a leg bye but replays show a thick inside edge, the appeal is turned down anyway but I don't think the third umpire relayed to Rauf that it should have been given a run
