Australia tour of South Africa, 1st T20I: South Africa v Australia at Johannesburg, Mar 27, 2009
South Africa won by 4 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)
27 March 2009 - night match (20-over match)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first Twenty20 international between South Africa and Australia being played in Johannesburg. The Tests are over, and the focus now shifts to the limited-overs format and both teams will be looking for some handy preparation ahead of the IPL - for those who are involved - and the World Twenty20 scheduled for June in England.

Johan Botha, who led the Twenty20 and ODI side well in Australia, will captain South Africa. There's no Peter Siddle or Ben Hilfenhaus for the visitors - both have gone home - so Johnson and limited-overs specialist Nathan Bracken could lead the attack.

There's still a while before the start, so read Peter English's preview to the game in the meantime. We'll get you the toss result and the teams shortly.

The news from the Wanderers is that South Africa have won the toss and opted to field.

Here are the teams:

South Africa: Gibbs, HM Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, VB van Jaarsveld, MV Boucher, JA Morkel, J Botha, RJ Peterson, WD Parnell, DW Steyn .

So Herschelle Gibbs, Robyn Peterson and Wayne Parnell are the new inclusions. They didn't play a part in the Tests.

Australia: Warner, BJ Haddin, RT Ponting, CL White, MEK Hussey, DJ Hussey, MJ Clarke, JR Hopes, SM Harwood, MG Johnson, B Geeves

Three new names for Australia as well: Brett Geeves, David Hussey and fast bowler Shane Harwood.

Michael Clarke will open with David Warner, who is facing Dale Steyn. All set.

0.1

Steyn to Warner, no run, shapes himself for a big one with that high backlift but the ball isn't there to hit, bowled on a good length on middle, pushed to mid-on

A slip in place

0.2

Steyn to Warner, no run, spat off the pitch, a scorcher that, slightly back of a length on the off stump and shot off to evade the outside edge as he tried to defend that off the back foot

0.3

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, superb stuff, stopped a bit on Warner, caught him by surprise as it zipped off the wicket, caught the outside edge and flew towards third man, he tried to play that down with soft hands but was a little late on the shot, no damage done though

0.4

Steyn to Clarke, no run, similar delivery but to the right hander this time, Clarke dealt with it well, unlike Warner he backed away from it

0.5

Steyn to Clarke, no run, missed opportunity, short and wide, there to cut, he tries to do exactly that but the ball moves away at the right moment to have him reaching for that one

0.6

Steyn to Clarke, 1 run, short of a good length outside off, dabbed wide of Duminy at cover for a quick single

Excellent first over by ten. Sharp, nippy and accurate.

End of over 1 (2 runs) Australia 2/0 (RR: 2.00)

    • MJ Clarke 1 (3b)
    • DA Warner 1 (3b)
    • DW Steyn 1-0-2-0

Wayne Parnell, the left-arm fast bowler charges in

1.1

Parnell to Clarke, 1 wide, starts off with a wide but bowled at a decent pace there, had Clarke reaching for a cut, missed it obviously, hence the wide

1.1

Parnell to Clarke, 1 run, much closer to the off stump and bowled a touch fuller, closes the face to push that short of mid-on for a quick single

1.2

Parnell to Warner, no run, good pace, short of a good length on middle and leg at 143 kmph, defended off the back foot towards midwicket

1.3

Parnell to Warner, 1 run, slower through the air and erred in length there, full on the pads, clipped away elegantly to fine leg

1.4

Parnell to Clarke, no run, well stopped, full on the off stump, Clarke plays a delightful drive back to the bowler, Parnell bends low, it catches him on the foot, and prevents a couple of runs, did well to get his body behind that one

1.5

Parnell to Clarke, OUT, timber! Parnell gets one, fullish on the off stump, held its line, Clarke had decided he would go after that one, bowled at 143 kmph, he makes room to smash that over extra cover, misses and the stumps take a beating!

MJ Clarke b Parnell 2 (7m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

South Africa have started well here, they've given little away, managed to frustrate Clarke, and he's paid the price for some impatience

Steyn to Warner, FOUR, full on the off stump, stands his ground and dispatches it over mid-on for a one bounce four, got under it nicely there, meaty length ball that got the treatment

2.2

Steyn to Warner, 2 runs, short of a good length on middle, mistimes a pull wide of fine leg for a couple, would have wanted to get that much squarer

2.3

Steyn to Warner, 1 wide, slower ball, misdirected though, well outside off stump and it's given a wide

2.3

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, back of a length on the off stump, dragged wide of mid-on for a single

Ponting to face

2.4

Steyn to Ponting, 1 leg bye, shuffles to work it away behind square, is struck on the pads, would have been going down anyway, gets a leg bye

2.5

Steyn to Warner, 1 run, slower ball bowled short on leg stump, turned away towards square leg for a single

2.6

Too much doubt there, and the umpire gives the batsman the benefit of the doubt

4.4

Parnell to DJ Hussey, no run, full on leg stump, tries to flick it away fine, misses, would have gone down

4.5

Parnell to DJ Hussey, 1 run, bowled on a good length at 124.1 kmph on the off stump, tries to drive it wide of mid-off, gets a thick inside edge towards mid -on

Steyn to DJ Hussey, SIX, what a knock! Picked the slower one there, ended up landing full on the off stump, waited for it and smashed it away over the long-on boundary, goes miles into the crowd and Australia have posted a competitive score here

Steyn to DJ Hussey, 1 run, struck fiercely but straight to the deep-cover fielder, raced off the bat but no damage done

Australia have recovered superbly, thanks to David Hussey's stellar 88 off 44 balls. They were reeling at 71 for 5, but Hussey's crucial partnerships with White and Johnson have got them to a challenging total. South Africa will be a little disappointed , especially after the start they got, but they have the wherewithal to scale down this score.

We are in for some entertainment tonight, so join us in about ten minutes for the run-chase.

Paul Taylor: "Dave is brilliant. I love him, if he's not in the Ashes squad it's a disgrace."

End of over 20 (17 runs) Australia 166/7
