Australia in South Africa ODI Series - 5th ODI

South Africa v Australia

Australia won by 47 runs

The players are out. Steyn will bowl to Haddin, he has two slips in place.

The umpires are strolling out and we'll be ready for the start in a couple of minutes. Leslie: "South Africa and Oz levelled the Test Series 3-3 but South Africa have annihilated the Australians in the ODI's, 7-2 to date. I think it is fair to say that South Africa have emerged as the better cricketing nation during the entire home and away series. What is the general opinion on this statement?"

Vlam: "Just had an interesting chat with an ex-provincial umpire outside of the business I work at. We are both in agreement that predicting a good score on any particular pitch have become almost impossible ever since the 438 game 3 years ago. Coincidentally the same two sides are today going at each other on the same pitch...would there be any predictions people would stick their necks out and offer as a decent score on this track? I think not...Not with Australia determined to win this one..."

Just to say folks, Between the two sides, ten men who played in the 438 match will take the field today - four from Australia and six from South Africa

The players are ready for the national anthems now, and the crowd gradually gets on its feet. Thando: "I must say, even as a Saffer, its a little disappointing that this game is a dead rubber. I would have loved to have seen something similar to 3 years ago!"

"Again", interesting name that, sends us the first feedback of the day: "There are no tickets for today's game, so it should be a packed house from 6pm onwards." Well, we are glad to hear that. It's an SA-Australia fixture after all, so anything below capacity is a let down. Shahad says : "SA will be missing Botha badly in this match. For the past 10 matches, he was the one who contained the oppositions and gave crucial breakthrough when it needed." Not sure about "badly", the series is already won, but you're right about him having done a good job in the middle overs. His spell with van der Merwe in the last match to trigger an Australian collapse proved crucial in the outcome.

So it's confirmed then. Laughlin is playing, and Ntini and Morkel are in for South Africa. Those are the only changes to the teams from the last game. Still 25 minutes to go before the start of play, so stay put.

Toss: The sun's beating down hard on the Bullring, but this match being a dead rubber, the stadium at the moment is well short of full capacity. The news is that South Africa have won the toss and opted to field. Remember they chased down 434 the last time they played Australia here in an ODI. Ponting says he would have bowled had he won the toss, but the expects the pitch to slow up a little as the game progresses.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the fifth and final ODI in Johannesburg. This is a dead rubber with South Africa leading the series 3-1, but Australia face Pakistan pretty soon in the UAE in an ODI series so they'll look to finish this tour on a high. There's still about ten minutes to go for the toss, so read the preview to the game in the meantime. Australia are currently No.3 in the ODI rankings, but if they win this, they'll jump to the second spot.

Johan Botha has not been included after he was called for a suspect action, and Wayne Parnell, who took four wickets in Centurion, has also been asked to sit out. They are replaced by Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel. Ben Laughlin is likely to come back for Australia, in place of Shane Harwood.

MJ Clarke    9* (10b 1x4)      DW Steyn    2-0-9-0

Tobias: "By the way, a friend of mine was at the ground last time these to teams met at the Wanderers. He was so disappointed after the Aussie innings that he went home to work on his masters thesis. 6.2

Steyn to Haddin, no run, short of a length outside off and moves away, left alone to the keeper

Richard: "In response to Vlam, I think Aus remain a better test team. SA did well to win the 2 tests in Aus but won them from unlikely situations - not luckily, but also not commandingly. Aus were also missing some of their more experienced players - Lee and Clark in particular were missed. But I agree SA is a clearly better ODI side at this stage."

Chee: "Leslie, I think Australia can still big called the most powerful cricketing nation in the world. People must remember the test side was severely weakened without Lee and Clark. Let's say South Africa were without Steyn and Ntini? what would happen? And the odi side is has been without lee and symonds. There you lose the best one day fast bowler and before his incidents the best all round one day player. If South Africa had the same losses Australia has had, i'm convinced we'd have won all the series."

Steyn to Clarke, no run, shot for lbw, gets wide of the crease and bowls it on a good length on middle, nipped back in a touch as it pitched, Clarke got his front foot across and tried to flick that wide of midwicket, missed it and was rapped in front. Steyn goes up immediately, but the umpire says no. Looked pretty adjacent to me

19.1

JA Morkel to Haddin, OUT, he's got him! SA following up well on that maiden, full on the off stump, Haddin makes room to cart that over the infield on the off side, ends up slicing it really high and Duminy at deep cover, positioned perfectly, just had to take few steps to his right to complete an easy catch

Steyn to Ponting, 1 run, short of a length on the off, dropped short of cover for a quick single

Matt: "To Sean, the criticism of one day cricket for some time has been the relatively predictable middle overs where teams tend to calmly accumulate 1s and 2s. This is one of the major reasons batting power plays were introduced. If T20 cricket has demonstrated another way is possible then this is not a bad thing. ODI's changed the nature of Test batting and T20 is doing the same thing now to ODI's."

We may not have a 434 here. The pitch has slowed up a bit, and the spinners have proved highly effective. Getting Ferguson out was crucial, but the men out in the middle did the bulk of the damage in that famous ODI the last time these two teams met at the venue, so we'll just have to wait and see. However, the home team, despite the high run-rate, have recovered very well.

Ben: "hussey, who is facing a series break at the conclusion of this match, really needs to hit out or get out..his form slump has been a direct result of negative batting, an aspect that needs to be reversed.. otherwise the sun will set on his career. "

Robert: "After all the talk a few weeks ago of Mitchell Johnson becoming an "all rounder" he has slumped badly. I don't think he's made double digits since that conversation. Where is Symonds when we need him??"

Morne into the attack now

46.1

M Morkel to MEK Hussey, FOUR, poor ball first up, short outside leg stump and Hussey gets back and across to help it on its way over short fine for a much-needed four

46.2

M Morkel to MEK Hussey, 1 run, struck away into the deep towards the cover for a single

Kelvin: "I think its quite unfair of all the criticism of Mike Hussey, I mean had it not been for his success in finishing off every innings in his earlier career then Australia would have lost a lot of games in that time. To say that its his fault that the batting has been ordinary of recent is simply narrow minded, its a team sport after all and all the batsmen around him should be held just as accountable. He's better suited batting lower middle order too."

46.3

M Morkel to Hauritz, no run, slower one on

46.4

M Morkel to Hauritz, 1 run, good length on the off, gets forward to drive to down to mid-off

End of over 47 (11 runs) Australia 275/7 (RR: 5.85)

47.1

Steyn to MEK Hussey, 1 run, good length outside off, it's a little wide, Hussey reaches for it to play it wide of cover for a quick single

Andrew: "Yeah, Mitch has been having some trouble with the bat. I think it has something to do with the fact that he always seems to be coming in after a big collapse, and the pressure is on to make quick runs. In tests, he has a chance to get his eye in before starting to hit cleanly. Not an all rounder, sure, but a handy striker in situations where he has a bit more support from the middle order."

47.2

Steyn to Hauritz, 1 run, on middle and leg, pushed wide of midwicket for a single

47.3

Steyn to MEK Hussey, no run, slower ball bowled full outside off, an offcutter that leaves Hussey as he tries to waft that over midwicket, handy delivery that

47.4

47.5

Steyn to MEK Hussey, FOUR, finds the gap this time, dropped his pace once again but Hussey expected that, waited for it and cut it away off the back foot into the vacant cover region on the off side

47.6

Steyn to MEK Hussey, no run, full on middle and leg, was in the slot, a length ball that, tried to smash it over midwicket, ended up getting an inside edge just wide of leg stump

End of over 48 (6 runs) Australia 281/7 (RR: 5.85)
MEK Hussey    44* (52b 4x4)      DW Steyn    9-0-61-0

49.3

Steyn to Hauritz, SIX, slower ball on middle that he picked pretty early, made room and struck it cleanly over long-on into the stands, he's made up somewhat after struggling for most of this innings, 300 up

49.4

Steyn to Hauritz, 1 run, full on the off stump, makes room and steers it wide of point for a single

49.5

Steyn to MEK Hussey, 1 run, full outside off, slashed towards point where Gibbs keeps them down to a single

49.6

Steyn to Hauritz, 1 bye, full and wide, swings hard but makes no contact, they run through for a bye

A highly competitive score by Australia, but given the pitch and going by past records, South Africa will fancy chasing this one. At one stage, with Clarke and Haddin going strong, it seemed as though a score of well above 350 was in the offing, but the spinners, as they did in the previous game, pulled it back for South Africa, with van der Merwe and the surprise package Duminy taking five wickets between them to curtail Australia in the middle stages.

Ferguson proved an important wicket as he had brought the momentum back with the visitors with a fluent 41 and the openers had departed. Ponting got a start but never looked dominant; and Hussey, along with Hauritz, dealt some useful blows in the end to take his team past 300. South Africa, though, have the wherewithal to chase this down, but with the pitch getting a little slow, their task may not be all that easy. Join us in about 30 minutes for the run-chase.
