50.3

Swann to de Villiers, 1 run, leant on towards mid on where sharp running allows a single

50.4

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, nicely flighted but Kallis pushed it to long on for one

50.5

Swann to de Villiers, 1 run, pushed to mid on, and another quick single from de Villiers. Much to the annoyance of the bowler

50.6

Swann to Kallis, no run, Kallis on 49, but his drive can't beat Swann fielding off his own bowling

End of over 51 (4 runs) South Africa 156/3
JH Kallis    49* (84b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    9-1-33-1
AB de Villiers    31* (54b 5x4)      PD Collingwood    2-0-5-0

South Africa look in control here, not much happening for the England bowlers

51.1

Collingwood to de Villiers, 1 run, firmly driven through the cover region but mid off gets round and does the fielding

51.2

Collingwood to Kallis, no run, tight line, defended by Kallis

51.3

Collingwood to Kallis, 1 run, drifts on the legs and Kallis works it away for one to bring up his 50, from 86 deliveries. Barely raised a sweat

51.4

Collingwood to de Villiers, no run, defended back towards mid on

51.5

Collingwood to de Villiers, no run, the slightest hint of away movement but not nearly enough to cause problems for de Villiers who defends to off

51.6

Collingwood to de Villiers, no run, bit shorter and de Villiers squeezes out a cut shot but can't time it

End of over 52 (2 runs) South Africa 158/3
AB de Villiers    32* (58b 5x4)      PD Collingwood    3-0-7-0
JH Kallis    50* (86b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    9-1-33-1

52.1

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, turned into the leg side for a single, Kallis looks in control

52.2

Swann to de Villiers, no run

52.3

Swann to de Villiers, no run, defended back down the pitch

52.4

Swann to de Villiers, no run, slightly quicker ball and sharp fielding prevents a run

52.5

Swann to de Villiers, no run, massive appeal from the bowler off an attempted sweep shot. There is no hotspot or snicko and it doesn't look like he hit it. England have called for the review but it would be difficult to overturn the not out decision

England have wasted both their reviews now, having been very cautious with them early on today

52.6

Swann to de Villiers, no run, this time turned gently and without incident to Cook at short leg

End of over 53 (1 run) South Africa 159/3
AB de Villiers    32* (63b 5x4)      GP Swann    10-1-34-1
JH Kallis    51* (87b 5x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    3-0-7-0

53.5

Collingwood to Kallis, no run, decent line from Collingwood, on off stump, defended

53.6

Collingwood to Kallis, no run, fuller and clipped to short midwicket to complete a maiden over

End of over 54 (maiden) South Africa 159/3
JH Kallis    51* (93b 5x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    4-1-7-0

54.1

Swann to de Villiers, no run, on off stump and defended

54.2

Swann to de Villiers, no run, floated up to tempt de Villiers, but he just defends

54.3

Swann to de Villiers, OUT, gone this time! Thrown up and gets the inside edge from de Villiers's defensive stroke and goes straight to Cook at short leg. Bit of turn and extra bounce, classic offspinner's delivery. England really needed that.

AB de Villiers c Cook b Swann 32 (82m 66b 5x4 0x6) SR: 48.48

In comes JP Duminy and he's joined by a crowd of Englishmen around the bat

54.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, arrowed in, possibly looking for the lbw but turned into the leg side

54.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, more flight and defended away

54.6

Swann to Duminy, no run, defended again and that's tea

End of over 55 (wicket maiden) South Africa 159/4
JP Duminy    0* (3b)      GP Swann    11-2-34-2
JH Kallis    51* (93b 5x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    4-1-7-0

It's Stuart Broad who'll get this final session underway. He hasn't bowled fantastically well so far but Strauss has kept the faith.

Right, the players are back out on the field and after a tight day we should be in for an enthralling final session.

It's been a fascinating first day and has clearly pleased someone calling himself KP "After 400-run test days & 800-run one-days here in India, its so eye-soothing & sense-fulfilling to see decent bowling & pitches with some life. Whoa! This year will be remembered for some splendid tests & so many dull ones. Hope Centurion belongs to the former."

Bowling first on a greenish wicket you could have suspected the seamers to dominate but instead Swann has been the main man for England. Kallis looks like he's never been away as he serenely worked to another fifty.

Another even session, and you suspect many will be this series. England really needed a lift after wasting a couple of reviews and Swann delivered.

55.1

Broad to Kallis, no run, starts well with a full delivery defended by Kallis

55.2

Broad to Kallis, no run, keeps a little low but Kallis jabs his bat down in time

55.3

Broad to Kallis, no run, a touch wide of off stump and Kallis watches it pass

55.4

Broad to Kallis, 1 run, shorter and Kallis gloves his pull down to square leg

Broad's first ball to Duminy and England are on the attack with slips and a short leg. The field says short bowling

55.5

Broad to Duminy, 1 wide, and short it is. Far too short sails over his head

55.5

Broad to Duminy, no run, short again and Duminy stands tall to defend

55.6

Broad to Duminy, no run, short once more catches the thigh pad and floats to short leg. Clear intent from England but no alarm for Duminy

End of over 56 (2 runs) South Africa 161/4
JP Duminy    0* (5b)      SCJ Broad    14-5-28-1
JH Kallis    52* (97b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    11-2-34-2

56.1

56.3

Swann to Duminy, no run, defended off the outside half of the bat

56.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, invites a drive but it's mistimed

56.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, stretches forward to defend

56.6

Swann to Duminy, 1 run, slower and a hint of turn but Duminy pushes into the off side to get his first run

End of over 57 (2 runs) South Africa 163/4
JP Duminy    1* (10b)      GP Swann    12-2-36-2
JH Kallis    53* (98b 5x4 1x6)      SCJ Broad    14-5-28-1

57.1

Broad to Duminy, no run, back of a length again to Duminy but the ball doesn't get up and he has plenty of time to defend into the off side

57.2

Broad to Duminy, no run, defended off the back foot into the off side

57.3

Broad to Duminy, no run, another short ball and a bit predictable. It passes over a ducking Duminy

57.4

Broad to Duminy, no run, this time it's slightly fuller and Duminy is hanging back but defends

57.5

Broad to Duminy, no run, back of a length and it takes a while to reach Duminy as he prods into the leg side

57.6

Broad to Duminy, no run, shortish, catches the thigh pad and loops to short leg

End of over 58 (maiden) South Africa 163/4
JP Duminy    1* (16b)      SCJ Broad    15-6-28-1
JH Kallis    53* (98b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    12-2-36-2

58.1

Swann to Kallis, no run, flicked but straight into Cook's shins at short leg

58.2

Swann to Kallis, no run, defended without alarm

58.3

Swann to Kallis, no run, Kallis walks across his stumps to turn it into the leg side but sharp fielding from Cook prevents any runs

58.4

Swann to Kallis, no run, slightly quicker outside off and defended easily

58.5

Swann to Kallis, no run, pushed into the leg side

58.6

Swann to Kallis, no run, goes across his stumps but misses his attempted work into the leg side

End of over 59 (maiden) South Africa 163/4
JH Kallis    53* (104b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    13-3-36-2
JP Duminy    1* (16b)      SCJ Broad    15-6-28-1

59.1

Broad to Duminy, no run, Broad gets this one wrong as it goes well down the leg side

59.2

Broad to Duminy, no run, short but better directed. Duminy gets right over the ball and defends easily

Duminy not being tempted into a pull shot

59.3

Broad to Duminy, no run, another short ball, Duminy ducks under it

59.4

Broad to Duminy, FOUR, the first full ball in a while to Duminy, but it's a half volley and he drives handsomely through mid off for four

59.5

Broad to Duminy, no run, so Broad reverts back to a short length but it's well down the leg side

59.6

Broad to Duminy, no run, nicely driven off the back foot towards extra cover where a diving Ian Bell prevents any runs

End of over 60 (4 runs) South Africa 167/4
JP Duminy    5* (22b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    16-6-32-1
JH Kallis    53* (104b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    13-3-36-2

Cue jokes about diving Bells ... yes, we've heard them all before. Right, Miller here for another hour of fun and frolics. Sahil's off to make a brew, and Swann is back for another over

60.1

Swann to Kallis, no run, turned off the straight and narrow, into the leg side

60.2

Swann to Kallis, no run, looped up, and defended resolutely

60.3

Swann to Kallis, no run, clipped to short leg

60.4

Swann to Kallis, no run, dabbed out to point

60.5

Swann to Kallis, no run, big stride, and defended out to cover

Graham Onions has a calf strain, is the news from the dressing room. And that is a big blow, in a four-man attack. Especially as he has been the stand-out seamer today

60.6

Swann to Kallis, no run, defended with rock-like authority. If rocks can have authority.

"He is undergoing extensive treatment" according to the ECB. Sounds worrying

End of over 61 (maiden) South Africa 167/4
JH Kallis    53* (110b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    14-4-36-2
JP Duminy    5* (22b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    16-6-32-1

61.1

Broad to Duminy, no run, round the wicket, and banged in short

61.2

Broad to Duminy, no run, pitched up this time and defended back down the track

61.3

Broad to Duminy, no run, pushed onto the back foot, and defended with a hop

61.4

Broad to Duminy, no run, width outside off stump, and no stroke offered

61.5

Broad to Duminy, no run, banged in again, as if this surface is a road. Which, I suppose, it is at this stage of the day and the innings. Should England have batted? I wonder

61.6

Broad to Duminy, FOUR, sweetly struck. Right out of the screws, and through the covers for a handsome boundary

End of over 62 (4 runs) South Africa 171/4
JP Duminy    9* (28b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    17-6-36-1
JH Kallis    53* (110b 5x4 1x6)      GP Swann    14-4-36-2

62.1

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, dragged out of the crease and pushed down the ground

62.2

Swann to Duminy, no run, clipped off the pads and worked to square leg

62.3

Swann to Duminy, no run, looped up from round the wicket, and defended

62.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, big stride forward and defended back down the track

62.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, squared up a touch by a middle-and-leg line, but safely negotiated

62.6

Swann to Duminy, no run, solid defence, as a powercut strikes Centurion

End of over 63 (1 run) South Africa 172/4
JP Duminy    9* (33b 2x4)      GP Swann    15-4-37-2
JH Kallis    54* (111b 5x4 1x6)      SCJ Broad    17-6-36-1

Here comes James Anderson. He was intimating that there was some reverse on offer earlier. I wonder if he can make the ball talk in this spell

63.1

Anderson to Kallis, no run, that's a horrid swish from Kallis and he's disgusted with himself. Through to the keeper with no real alarm though

63.2

Anderson to Kallis, FOUR, on the toes and imperiously flicked through midwicket. He is cruising now

63.3

Anderson to Kallis, no run, dead-straight bat, and punched up and over the bowler's head

63.4

Anderson to Kallis, no run, wide of off stump, thrashed out to point, but easily fielded

63.5

Anderson to Kallis, FOUR, too short and too wide, and Kallis climbs into a cut, and the ball fizzes past backward point

63.6

Anderson to Kallis, no run, down the leg-side to complete an indifferent over

End of over 64 (8 runs) South Africa 180/4
JH Kallis    62* (117b 7x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    16-6-47-0
JP Duminy    9* (33b 2x4)      GP Swann    15-4-37-2

So, England are down to three frontline bowlers, and only one of them, Swann, has really hit his straps today. Here he is

64.1

Swann to Duminy, no run, round the wicket, staunch defence on off stump

64.2

Swann to Duminy, no run, a threat of turn on off stump, but short enough to be watched onto the bat

64.3

Swann to Duminy, SIX, thwacked. A two-step down the track, gets to the pitch, and the ball flies through the thin Highveld air to long-on

64.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, driven, but uncomfortably, back to the bowler

So, how is this match placed? Go and argue with everyone at our Facebook page.

64.5

Swann to Duminy, no run

64.6

Swann to Duminy, no run, defended once again. Swann is keeping it real here, despite the odd indignity

End of over 65 (6 runs) South Africa 186/4
JP Duminy    15* (39b 2x4 1x6)      GP Swann    16-4-43-2
JH Kallis    62* (117b 7x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    16-6-47-0

65.1

Anderson to Kallis, FOUR, bad bowling from Anderson, too short and wide again, and Kallis lets the pace do the work as he hangs out his bat and guides a four through third man

65.2

Anderson to Kallis, no run, tighter, and defended on off stump

65.3

Anderson to Kallis, no run, still a bit of width, but fuller this time. Clubbed to cover off the back foot

"Hats off to Kallis for his sheer determination for the game. It's really amazing how great players reply to criticism only by their performance and not by words," says Super Sniper. "I am eagerly waiting for SA tour of India. I hope Kallis will be in the squad." If he's not, then my name is Derek

65.4

Anderson to Kallis, no run, better line and length, but the ball is doing nothing off the wicket now

65.5

Anderson to Kallis, no run, outside off, no stroke offered

65.6

Anderson to Kallis, no run, still no stroke as Anderson ploughs a furrow outside off stump

End of over 66 (4 runs) South Africa 190/4
JH Kallis    66* (123b 8x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    17-6-51-0
JP Duminy    15* (39b 2x4 1x6)      GP Swann    16-4-43-2

Fourteen overs until the new ball, which is roughly an hour. No Onions, so Broad and Anderson will need to rest up. Collingwood for another burst, perhaps? For now it's Swann

66.1

Swann to Duminy, 1 run, round the wicket, pushed off the back foot to cover

66.2

Swann to Kallis, no run, driven with a flourish into the covers, and Duminy had to hustle as the shy came in

66.3

Swann to Kallis, no run

66.4

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, tucked round the front pad and picked up at midwicket

66.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, punched down the ground with no great aggression

66.6

Swann to Duminy, 2 runs, full toss on the leg stump - that's a bit of a gimme - and it's squeezed out to deep midwicket

End of over 67 (4 runs) South Africa 194/4
JP Duminy    18* (42b 2x4 1x6)      GP Swann    17-4-47-2
JH Kallis    67* (126b 8x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    17-6-51-0

67.1

Anderson to Kallis, no run, that kept a touch low as Kallis spiked down on his shot, but it passed safely by

67.2

Anderson to Kallis, no run, outside off once more

67.3

Anderson to Kallis, no run, left alone outside off, both teams settling into a holding pattern right now. A touch drifty, but that's forgivable. It's a Test match, and amen for that!

67.4

Anderson to Kallis, no run, through to the keeper once again

67.5

Anderson to Kallis, no run, tighter line and length, full on off stump, and met with a full face

67.6

Anderson to Kallis, 1 run, tucked to mid-on to keep the strike. Solid and comfortable batting from this pair

End of over 68 (1 run) South Africa 195/4
JH Kallis    68* (132b 8x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    18-6-52-0
JP Duminy    18* (42b 2x4 1x6)      GP Swann    17-4-47-2

68.1

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, turned off the pads to square leg

"AB de Villiers' parents should have given him a third name like "Charles", so the first five letters of his name would have been a-b-c-d-e," says Charles. "Then all we need is to change "Villiers" to "Filliers" and he can bat right through 20% of the alphabet." It's amazing what nonsense people come up with while waiting for the new ball

68.2

Swann to Duminy, no run, floated onto a good length from round the wicket

68.3

Swann to Duminy, no run, a hint of turn and left alone

68.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, forward with bat and pad, and defended

68.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, squared up on leg stump, and defended

68.6

Swann to Duminy, no run, that's a good ball, on off stump and definite turn and bounce. Smothered in the end, but mild encouragement for England

End of over 69 (1 run) South Africa 196/4
JP Duminy    18* (47b 2x4 1x6)      GP Swann    18-4-48-2
JH Kallis    69* (133b 8x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    18-6-52-0

69.1

Anderson to Kallis, no run, pushed out to point

"Although Swann has been one of the better bowlers today, the lack of variety in his bowling is really what's preventing him being more potent on this nothing-to-offer batting track," opines Neil. That's harsh in my opinion. Short of possessing a doosra, Swann is about as varied and attacking as any offspinner can be.

69.2

Anderson to Kallis, 1 run, clipped to square leg and through they jog

69.3

Anderson to Duminy, no run, ploughing the furrow again, and Duminy leaves alone

69.4

Anderson to Duminy, no run, turned off the face of the bat, to short leg

69.5

Anderson to Duminy, no run, some good news for England, Onions is back on the field, although according to Robin, the Cricinfo oracle, he cannot bowl until 1703 local time (1503GMT). So he's in mothballs for half an hour yet

69.6

Anderson to Duminy, FOUR, caressed through the covers, and that's a super strike

End of over 70 (5 runs) South Africa 201/4
JP Duminy    22* (51b 3x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    19-6-57-0
JH Kallis    70* (135b 8x4 1x6)      GP Swann    18-4-48-2

70.1

Swann to Kallis, no run, round the wicket, defended on off stump

70.2

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, whipped to mid-on, and easily fielded. Authoritative stroke though

70.3

Swann to Duminy, no run, flatter through the air, and defended to cover

70.4

Swann to Duminy, 1 run, on the legs, tucked fine for a single

70.5

Swann to Kallis, no run, round the wicket, and that's a wide delivery, but not called wide, if you get my gist

70.6

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, pushed to cover, and that will be drinks

Well, that mini-session was all South Africa. Kallis is looking dead-set for a massive score here, and England are putting their hopes in the new ball, it would appear. Here's Sahil for a quick burst

End of over 71 (3 runs) South Africa 204/4
JH Kallis    72* (139b 8x4 1x6)      GP Swann    19-4-51-2
JP Duminy    23* (53b 3x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    19-6-57-0

Nine long overs until the new ball and England are on the attack with Jonathan Trott. He bowled fairly well in the one-dayers but the South African's would kick themselves if they lost a wicket here.

71.1

Trott to Kallis, 1 run, on leg stump and eased to deep midwicket for a single

71.2

Trott to Duminy, no run, just outside off stump and defended easily enough

71.3

Trott to Duminy, no run, bit of extra width inviting a drive which goes to short extra cover

71.4

Trott to Duminy, no run, fuller and a touch wider and Duminy has none of it

71.5

Trott to Duminy, no run, driven out to the covers again

71.6

Trott to Duminy, no run, pretty gentle stuff this as a floated ball is driven to mid off

End of over 72 (1 run) South Africa 205/4
JP Duminy    23* (58b 3x4 1x6)      IJL Trott    1-0-1-0

72.2

Swann to Kallis, no run, flicked to short mid wicket

72.3

72.4

Swann to Duminy, no run, hint of turn but it's guided easily out towards point

72.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, outside off stump and Duminy shoulders arms

72.6

Swann to Duminy, no run, driven firmly and it's intercepted by a diving Strauss at short extra cover

JP Duminy    23* (61b 3x4 1x6)      GP Swann    20-4-52-2
JH Kallis    74* (143b 8x4 1x6)      IJL Trott    1-0-1-0

73.1

Trott to Kallis, no run, straightish and happily defended

73.2

Trott to Kallis, no run, drifts down the leg side and Prior takes a good take, standing up to the stumps

73.3

Trott to Kallis, no run, effort ball, up to 72mph, Kallis defends

73.4

Trott to Kallis, no run, driven stylishly but to cover

73.5

Trott to Kallis, FOUR, this time it's slightly too full and Kallis drives through the covers for four. Lovely languid shot

73.6

Trott to Kallis, FOUR, better shot this one. Wasn't as full but Kallis took it on the up and drove through extra cover

End of over 74 (8 runs) South Africa 214/4
JH Kallis    82* (149b 10x4 1x6)      IJL Trott    2-0-9-0
JP Duminy    23* (61b 3x4 1x6)      GP Swann    20-4-52-2

74.5

Swann to Duminy, no run, prodded into the leg side

74.6

England are drifting a bit here as Collingwood returns

75.1

Collingwood to Kallis, no run, and starts with a grim ball speared down the leg side

And here is the new ball. Stuart Broad is the man to take it and he needs to bowl better than he did this morning with the first new ball. Having inserted South Africa, England need a couple of wickets here,

81.1

Broad to Kallis, no run, outside off stump and left alone

81.2

Broad to Kallis, no run, wide of off stump again and Kallis has nothing to do with it

81.3

Broad to Kallis, no run, finds the right length and a touch of swing but is too wide again to interest Kallis

81.6

Broad to Kallis, 1 run, finishes well. Joins up the right line with the right length and Kallis defends with a hint of discomfort

82.5

Anderson to Duminy, no run, better shape on this, coming back into the batsman, but he defends solidly

82.6

Anderson to Duminy, no run, outside off stump and left alone

83.3

Broad to Kallis, no run, decent delivery on off stump and Kallis watches it carefully on to his bat

84.3

Anderson to Kallis, 2 runs, good delivery, finds some extra bounce just outside off. Kallis rides with it and guides it down to third man

84.5

Anderson to Kallis, no run, and this one kept a little low on a similar line. Will England regret opting to bat last on this?

84.6

Anderson to Kallis, no run, tight line to finish but Kallis is untroubled as he defends back down the pitch to Anderson

End of over 85 (3 runs) South Africa 243/4

85.2

Broad to Kallis, no run, good line and length and Kallis plays and misses. Just fenced a little at it outside off

85.5

Broad to Kallis, no run, pitched up and finds some outswing but Kallis leaves it alone

86.1

Anderson to Duminy, no run, angles it in at Duminy who defends

86.2

86.4

Anderson to Duminy, no run, back of a length again but defended into the off side

86.6

Anderson to Duminy, 3 runs, lovely shot, back of length delivery, and Duminy took it on the top of the bounce and punched it through the extra cover region

87.4

Onions to Kallis, 1 run, worked into the leg side to bring up South Africa's 250

87.5

Onions to Duminy, 2 runs, a hint of extra bounce but doesn't undue alarm as it's turned to square leg for a couple

87.6

Onions to Duminy, no run, shortish, doesn't really get up and Duminy has to really crouch to get underneath it

End of over 88 (4 runs) South Africa 252/4

End of over 89 (3 runs) South Africa 255/4
JH Kallis    106* (197b 13x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    23-6-68-0
JP Duminy    38* (103b 4x4 1x6)      G Onions    13-2-46-1

89.1

Onions to Kallis, FOUR, you would have thought the batsmen would just block it out. Instead Kallis swivels on one leg and pulls for a boundary. Lovely shot

89.2

Onions to Kallis, no run, keeps a little low but Kallis is up to the task

89.3

Onions to Kallis, 2 runs, drifted on to the legs again and timed nicely into the leg side for a couple more

89.4

Onions to Kallis, 1 wide, attempted bouncer, you could almost feel Onions's effort there. But it's too short and it passes well over Kallis's duck

89.4

Onions to Kallis, no run, better, full and straight, that's where he bowled all day. But it meets the wall that is a Kallis defensive stroke

89.5

Onions to Kallis, no run, defended away again

89.6

Onions to Kallis, no run, defends once more. That's it for the day.

That's it from me. Andrew Miller's bulletin is ready for your delight, and so too is the gallery from the first day's play, as well as Andrew McGlashan's Plays of the day. Oh, and don't forget to go and squabble with the masses on our Facebook page.

I hope you'll join us tomorrow at 10.30am (8.30 GMT) for all the action from the second day.

After two sessions the day was evenly poised but Kallis and Duminy stood firm in the final session and have put South Africa in a commanding position.

Stumps at Centurion and the day has belonged to Jacques Kallis. Having won the toss and fielder first England would have wanted more from their bowlers. In the end Swann was probably the pick but nobody troubled Kallis.

End of over 90 (7 runs) South Africa 262/4
JH Kallis    112* (203b 14x4 1x6)      G Onions    14-2-53-1
JP Duminy    38* (103b 4x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    23-6-68-0

10.30am The players are out on the field, there are some tasty indentations in the second-day wicket that the new-ball bowlers should aim to target. And first up, it will be James Anderson to bowl to JP Duminy.

10.20am Good morning, good morning, and welcome back for more festive frolics in the Centurion sun. We're about ten minutes away from the start of the second day's play, and what a day we have in prospect. Jacques Kallis's 32nd Test century ensured South Africa took the opening honours, but their rate of scoring was slow enough to leave England very much in the contest. A few quick strikes with the still-new ball, and the tail could yet be exposed.

Ottis Gibson, England's bowling coach, admits that the wicket didn't play quite as badly as they had expected on winning the toss, but he's happy that all his bowlers will be fit to resume their duties, including Graham Onions, who sustained a slight calf strain yesterday afternoon.

Nasser Hussain, with his pundit's hat on, however, is less amused. "Did no-one tell them it was going to be hot in Africa?" he fumes, while muttering darkly about the fact that Onions has been in the continent for five weeks and yet has bowled just 10 overs prior to this game.

Gnasher McGlashan has arrived at the ground, but not many punters seem to be there just yet. I'm sure they'll start to drift in at some stage. It promises to be hot, hot, hot today. Incidentally, I'm Andrew Miller, and Sahil Dutta will be alongside me in the comms hotseat for the duration of this match.

90.1

Anderson to Duminy, no run, good length to start things off, defended from the crease

90.2

Anderson to Duminy, FOUR, that's epic timing. Walked into the stroke, and pushed it straight to the long-off boundary. Nice

90.3

Anderson to Duminy, no run, slightly shorter, and some grunts of anguish as it whistles through

90.4

Anderson to Duminy, 1 run, on the pads, and whisked to short fine leg to bring the centurion onto strike

90.5

Anderson to Kallis, no run, decent line to start his day's work. Six inches outside off, and a very full length. Left alone

90.6

Anderson to Kallis, no run, cramped on the crease, and a massive appeal. Looked to be sliding over leg stump, but England have no reviews left, so it's immaterial. Good start though

End of over 91 (5 runs) South Africa 267/4
JH Kallis    112* (205b 14x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    24-6-73-0
JP Duminy    43* (107b 5x4 1x6)      G Onions    14-2-53-1

Onions has the new ball, despite his injury worries. And that's both a good sign for England, and a good move from Strauss

91.1

Onions to Duminy, 1 run, slightly leg-sided, but no real damage done

91.2

Onions to Kallis, no run, outside off, and Kallis shoulders arms

Three slips and a gully in place at this stage

91.3

Onions to Kallis, no run, diligent line, and Kallis flinches a touch as the ball ghosts past his edge

91.4

Onions to Kallis, no run, a foot too wide to be of interest, and so Kallis shows no interest whatsoever

91.5

Onions to Kallis, no run, outside off, and Kallis attempts to leave but snags the ball with the back of his bat as he lifts it out of harm's way. Lucky not to deflect more dangerously

91.6

Onions to Kallis, no run, outside off, left alone, and that's a tidy start, if perhaps six inches wide of the optimum line for these conditions.

End of over 92 (1 run) South Africa 268/4
JH Kallis    112* (210b 14x4 1x6)      G Onions    15-2-54-1
JP Duminy    44* (108b 5x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    24-6-73-0

92.1

Anderson to Duminy, no run, that's a good ball, and Duminy props forward to smother it with massive resolve

92.2

Anderson to Duminy, no run, a hint of movement in evidence for Anderson, but nothing extravagent

92.3

Anderson to Duminy, no run, punched out to midwicket

In case you haven't seen what's been going on in Perth in the last few hours, have a look at this scorecard. Chris Gayle is frankly a nutter, but we love him here at Cricinfo Towers

92.4

Anderson to Duminy, 1 run, on the pads and tucked to square leg

92.5

Anderson to Kallis, FOUR, short and wide, and Kallis flings the sink, bakkie and braai at that one. Huge uppercutting cut shot, and that's his first boundary of the morning

92.6

Anderson to Kallis, no run, outside off, more circumspect to complete the over

End of over 93 (5 runs) South Africa 273/4
JH Kallis    116* (212b 15x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    25-6-78-0
JP Duminy    45* (112b 5x4 1x6)      G Onions    15-2-54-1

Short leg for Duminy as Onions continues

93.1

Onions to Duminy, 1 run, on the pads again and nudged away

93.2

Onions to Kallis, no run, outside off and no stroke offered

93.3

Onions to Kallis, no run, better line, as this one skids over the top of off, but that's good judgment from Kallis who leaves on length

A couple of men lurking for the hook ...

93.4

Onions to Kallis, no run, left alone again. Kallis is content to bide his time. And the Pope is also Catholic, as it happens

93.5

Onions to Kallis, no run, excellent ball, nip and bounce off the wicket, and Kallis is dragged into a flinch outside his comfort zone. Prior takes with fingers pointing skywards

"I have a bad feeling that Kallis is so preoccupied with the double century that SA is going to take too much time compiling a first innings score," says Virgil Slade. "As great as his record is, his 'bubble' has cost SA before in ODI's and tests. Hopefully, he will put the team first by setting the platform and then remaining positive." Spoken like a true pessimistic Bok.

93.6

Onions to Kallis, no run, drawn forward to defend

End of over 94 (1 run) South Africa 274/4
JH Kallis    116* (217b 15x4 1x6)      G Onions    16-2-55-1

94.1

Anderson to Duminy, no run, round the wicket now, and a decent line to start

94.2

Anderson to Duminy, no run, banged in short, and Duminy ducks

94.3

Anderson to Duminy, no run, tight line, angling into the left-hander, and finding a fractional inside-edge as well. A bit of movement?

94.4

Anderson to Duminy, no run, defended from the crease

94.5

Anderson to Duminy, no run, punched to midwicket off the back foot

94.6

Anderson to Duminy, no run, short, and fizzing down the leg side. Prior makes good ground to cut off the byes

JP Duminy    46* (119b 5x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    26-7-78-0
JH Kallis    116* (217b 15x4 1x6)      G Onions    16-2-55-1

95.1

Onions to Kallis, no run, nothing to tempt Kallis into an indiscretion there

95.2

Onions to Kallis, no run, keeping it tight, but needs to stay on that off stump line

Strauss jogs down from slip to have a strategy meeting with his bowler

95.3

Onions to Kallis, no run, slippery delivery, climbs off the turf and Kallis defends with a note of surprise

95.4

Onions to Kallis, no run, pushed out to point, off the back foot

95.5

Onions to Kallis, no run, a bit wider on the crease this time - maybe that's what Strauss was suggesting to him - and Kallis defended with a hurry on the back foot

95.6

Onions to Kallis, FOUR, wide of the crease, and that's a horrid floaty half-volley, and Kallis simply eases that through point. Not the ideal variety delivery, that

End of over 96 (4 runs) South Africa 278/4
JH Kallis    120* (223b 16x4 1x6)      G Onions    17-2-59-1
JP Duminy    46* (119b 5x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    26-7-78-0

96.1

Anderson to Duminy, FOUR, sweet and emphatic, and that's Duminy's half-century. A flourishing punched drive, straight through the covers. Wonderful to watch

96.2

Anderson to Duminy, no run, wide outside off, and left alone

96.3

Anderson to Duminy, no run, tighter line, but back of a length. No stroke once again

A few of you writing in to point out that a "bucci" is of course a "bakkie". My apologies. Either way, Kallis flung one at the ball, bull-bars and all

96.4

Anderson to Duminy, 1 run, fuller and straighter, and a dabbed defence brings a quick single to cover

96.5

Anderson to Kallis, no run, defended from a good length

96.6

Anderson to Kallis, OUT, my goodness me, it's a breakthrough! I did not see that coming. Kallis was looking utterly serene, but Anderson found a good length with a hint of extra bounce and a fraction of away movement, and Collingwood at second slip scooped another fine low catch

JH Kallis c Collingwood b Anderson 120 (306m 225b 16x4 1x6) SR: 53.33

What a vast moment in this match. Kallis and Duminy were starting to turn up the heat, but instead there's an opening, and there's still enough shine on the ball for England to make further inroads.

Still no double-century for Kallis, incidentally. How peculiar is that. Here's Mark Boucher

97.1

Onions to Duminy, no run, short, and well avoided. Hostile

97.2

Onions to Duminy, no run, on a good length, and defended into the leg side

"That was Jimmy's first Test wicket since he had Shane Watson caught behind in the second innings at Edgbaston," notes Gnasher McGlashan, our resident Lankyphile

97.3

Onions to Duminy, no run, short, and defended with a hop into the covers

97.4

Onions to Duminy, no run, drawn forward to meet a ball angled across his bows, and defended

97.5

Onions to Duminy, no run, full and floaty, but on the pads and Duminy can't get enough bat on that

97.6

Onions to Duminy, no run, short, and Duminy ducks. A lot rests on his shoulders now

"I am so tired of the negative comments about Jacques Kaliis," says David Clarence. "He is an unreplacable member of the team. He wears bowling attacks out and ties up an end and allows players like Graeme, AB and Duminy to play freely without pressure and be positive. He has proved countless times that he can turn it on if required to do so." Quite so.

MV Boucher    0* (0b)      JM Anderson    27-7-83-1

98.1

Anderson to Boucher, no run, Boucher negotiates his first delivery of the series

98.2

Anderson to Boucher, no run, drawn forward and staunchly defended

98.3

Anderson to Boucher, no run, tailing into the right-hander from a good length, and deflected to midwicket. Decent rhythm now

98.4

Anderson to Boucher, FOUR, too much width, and Boucher cashes in. A wristy cut, and that's middled to the point boundary

There's Dale Steyn in the stands. He looks like he's been up crying all night, poor chap

98.5

Anderson to Boucher, no run, wide, and no stroke offered this time

98.6

Anderson to Boucher, no run, a play and a miss, and that's the over

"I emailed twice yesterday syaing he'd never get there and that it's pretty poor for a player of his class and stature not to have a double hundred to his name...you obviously didn't think it was worthwhile printing...will this be?" asks someone who's so rude that I won't give him the credit he is so desperately seeking.

End of over 99 (4 runs) South Africa 287/5
MV Boucher    4* (6b 1x4)      JM Anderson    28-7-87-1
JP Duminy    51* (129b 6x4 1x6)      G Onions    18-3-59-1

Time for a change, here's Stuart Broad. What length will he choose today?

99.1

Broad to Duminy, 1 run, better length to start, but the line is awry

99.2

Broad to Boucher, no run, outside off, most of the way towards a full length. No stroke

99.3

Broad to Boucher, no run, that's the length, demanding a stroke because off stump is in danger, and finding just enough movement to keep the slips in business. Boucher copes this time, but uneasily

99.4

Broad to Boucher, no run, left alone, but uncertainly. Good pair of deliveries

99.5

Broad to Boucher, no run, banging out a rhythm six inches outside off stump. Boucher leaves alone

Only Ian Botham had taken more wickets for England by the age of 23, apparently

99.6

Broad to Boucher, no run, good over. Tight line and length
