massive appeal from the bowler off an attempted sweep shot. There is no hotspot or snicko and it doesn't look like he hit it. England have called for the review but it would be difficult to overturn the not out decision

It's Stuart Broad who'll get this final session underway. He hasn't bowled fantastically well so far but Strauss has kept the faith.
Right, the players are back out on the field and after a tight day we should be in for an enthralling final session.
It's been a fascinating first day and has clearly pleased someone calling himself KP "After 400-run test days & 800-run one-days here in India, its so eye-soothing & sense-fulfilling to see decent bowling & pitches with some life. Whoa! This year will be remembered for some splendid tests & so many dull ones. Hope Centurion belongs to the former."
Bowling first on a greenish wicket you could have suspected the seamers to dominate but instead Swann has been the main man for England. Kallis looks like he's never been away as he serenely worked to another fifty.
Another even session, and you suspect many will be this series. England really needed a lift after wasting a couple of reviews and Swann delivered.

After two sessions the day was evenly poised but Kallis and Duminy stood firm in the final session and have put South Africa in a commanding position.
Stumps at Centurion and the day has belonged to Jacques Kallis. Having won the toss and fielder first England would have wanted more from their bowlers. In the end Swann was probably the pick but nobody troubled Kallis.

10.30am The players are out on the field, there are some tasty indentations in the second-day wicket that the new-ball bowlers should aim to target. And first up, it will be James Anderson to bowl to JP Duminy.
10.20am Good morning, good morning, and welcome back for more festive frolics in the Centurion sun. We're about ten minutes away from the start of the second day's play, and what a day we have in prospect. Jacques Kallis's 32nd Test century ensured South Africa took the opening honours, but their rate of scoring was slow enough to leave England very much in the contest. A few quick strikes with the still-new ball, and the tail could yet be exposed.
Ottis Gibson, England's bowling coach, admits that the wicket didn't play quite as badly as they had expected on winning the toss, but he's happy that all his bowlers will be fit to resume their duties, including Graham Onions, who sustained a slight calf strain yesterday afternoon.
Nasser Hussain, with his pundit's hat on, however, is less amused. "Did no-one tell them it was going to be hot in Africa?" he fumes, while muttering darkly about the fact that Onions has been in the continent for five weeks and yet has bowled just 10 overs prior to this game.
Gnasher McGlashan has arrived at the ground, but not many punters seem to be there just yet. I'm sure they'll start to drift in at some stage. It promises to be hot, hot, hot today. Incidentally, I'm Andrew Miller, and Sahil Dutta will be alongside me in the comms hotseat for the duration of this match.

90.1 |
Anderson to Duminy,
no run,
good length to start things off, defended from the crease
|
90.2 |
Anderson to Duminy,
FOUR,
that's epic timing. Walked into the stroke, and pushed it straight to the long-off boundary. Nice
|
90.3 |
Anderson to Duminy,
no run,
slightly shorter, and some grunts of anguish as it whistles through
|
90.4 |
Anderson to Duminy,
1 run,
on the pads, and whisked to short fine leg to bring the centurion onto strike
|
90.5 |
Anderson to Kallis,
no run,
decent line to start his day's work. Six inches outside off, and a very full length. Left alone
|
90.6 |
Anderson to Kallis,
no run,
cramped on the crease, and a massive appeal. Looked to be sliding over leg stump, but England have no reviews left, so it's immaterial. Good start though

Onions has the new ball, despite his injury worries. And that's both a good sign for England, and a good move from Strauss
|
91.1 |
Onions to Duminy,
1 run,
slightly leg-sided, but no real damage done
|
91.2 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
outside off, and Kallis shoulders arms
|
Three slips and a gully in place at this stage
|
91.3 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
diligent line, and Kallis flinches a touch as the ball ghosts past his edge
|
91.4 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
a foot too wide to be of interest, and so Kallis shows no interest whatsoever
|
91.5 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
outside off, and Kallis attempts to leave but snags the ball with the back of his bat as he lifts it out of harm's way. Lucky not to deflect more dangerously
|
91.6 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
outside off, left alone, and that's a tidy start, if perhaps six inches wide of the optimum line for these conditions.

that's a good ball, and Duminy props forward to smother it with massive resolve
|
92.2 |
Anderson to Duminy,
no run,
a hint of movement in evidence for Anderson, but nothing extravagent
|
92.3 |
Anderson to Duminy,
no run,
punched out to midwicket
|
In case you haven't seen what's been going on in Perth in the last few hours, have a look at this scorecard. Chris Gayle is frankly a nutter, but we love him here at Cricinfo Towers
|
92.4 |
Anderson to Duminy,
1 run,
on the pads and tucked to square leg
|
92.5 |
Anderson to Kallis,
FOUR,
short and wide, and Kallis flings the sink, bakkie and braai at that one. Huge uppercutting cut shot, and that's his first boundary of the morning
|
92.6 |
Anderson to Kallis,
no run,
outside off, more circumspect to complete the over

on the pads again and nudged away
|
93.2 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
outside off and no stroke offered
|
93.3 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
better line, as this one skids over the top of off, but that's good judgment from Kallis who leaves on length
|
A couple of men lurking for the hook ...
|
93.4 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
left alone again. Kallis is content to bide his time. And the Pope is also Catholic, as it happens
|
93.5 |
Onions to Kallis,
no run,
excellent ball, nip and bounce off the wicket, and Kallis is dragged into a flinch outside his comfort zone. Prior takes with fingers pointing skywards
|
"I have a bad feeling that Kallis is so preoccupied with the double century that SA is going to take too much time compiling a first innings score," says Virgil Slade. "As great as his record is, his 'bubble' has cost SA before in ODI's and tests. Hopefully, he will put the team first by setting the platform and then remaining positive." Spoken like a true pessimistic Bok.

|
95.5 |
Onions to Kallis,

a bit wider on the crease this time - maybe that's what Strauss was suggesting to him - and Kallis defended with a hurry on the back foot
|
95.6 |

FOUR,
wide of the crease, and that's a horrid floaty half-volley, and Kallis simply eases that through point. Not the ideal variety delivery, that

|
96.3 |

|
A few of you writing in to point out that a "bucci" is of course a "bakkie". My apologies. Either way, Kallis flung one at the ball, bull-bars and all
|
96.4 |
Anderson to Duminy,
1 run,
fuller and straighter, and a dabbed defence brings a quick single to cover
|
96.5 |
Anderson to Kallis,
no run,
defended from a good length
|
96.6 |
Anderson to Kallis,
OUT,
my goodness me, it's a breakthrough! I did not see that coming. Kallis was looking utterly serene, but Anderson found a good length with a hint of extra bounce and a fraction of away movement, and Collingwood at second slip scooped another fine low catch

What a vast moment in this match. Kallis and Duminy were starting to turn up the heat, but instead there's an opening, and there's still enough shine on the ball for England to make further inroads.
Still no double-century for Kallis, incidentally. How peculiar is that. Here's Mark Boucher

"I am so tired of the negative comments about Jacques Kaliis," says David Clarence. "He is an unreplacable member of the team. He wears bowling attacks out and ties up an end and allows players like Graeme, AB and Duminy to play freely without pressure and be positive. He has proved countless times that he can turn it on if required to do so." Quite so.

better length to start, but the line is awry
|
99.2 |
Broad to Boucher,
no run,

|
99.3 |

that's the length, demanding a stroke because off stump is in danger, and finding just enough movement to keep the slips in business. Boucher copes this time, but uneasily
