Captain the Reverend William Benton was serving with the Manchester Regiment when he died of wounds. He played for Middlesex twice in 1913, by which time he was 40, but was best known for his association with the Mote Park CC. He served throughout the South African War, and in 1915 was wounded and invalided home. Before the war he was curate-in-charge of Bearsted, in Kent. He was in the XI at Framlingham College.
