Sam Black was a fast medium-pacer and tailender who was on the Middlesex books for four seasons, and while he failed to make much headway in the three-day game, he became a semi-regular in the Middlesex one-day side between 1971 and 1973. He made only one fifty in each form of the game, and those innings came within ten days of each other. Against Hampshire in the Championship he scored 71 batting at No.8, an innings which resulted in him being bumped up the order, and the following week he smacked 72 in a Sunday League game against Surrey.
