50.3

Harris to Karthik, 1 no ball, he oversteps, its a flatter ball on leg stump that he defends

50.3

Harris to Karthik, no run, Karthik comes down the track even before the ball is released. Harris holds it back a bit and fires it in flat. Karthik in the end is made to play a defensive shot. Well bowled

Harris to Karthik, 1 run, worked away behind square on the leg side, easy single

50.5

Harris to Jaffer, 1 run, on the stumps, Jaffer goes back and across and drives it well wide of the fielder at mid-on

50.6

Harris to Karthik, no run, good length delivery outside the off stump, defended on the front-foot

This is India's highest openeing partnership in South Africa. The last time any team scored 100 runs for the first wicket was when Andrew Strauss and Marcus Trescothick added 273 at Durban in 2004, 22 Tests ago. - pings our own George Binoy.

52.5

Harris to Karthik, no run, comes down the track and drives the ball in the air towards cover. Gibbs dives across and stops it on the bounce. Karthik after having played well to get to his half-century is looking lackluster at the moment. Jaffer will be reminding him that Tea is just 10 minutes away

Jitender Singh has another suggestion as to what Smith told Harris after that last over: "Get me this wicket ... or throw me out of this park "

52.6

Harris to Karthik, FOUR, short and wide outside the off stump, 'long-hop' as they call it all over the world. Karthik quickly gets into position and cuts it away through the gap between gully and point. As easy as it gets

KD Karthik    57* (158b 6x4)      PL Harris    10-1-28-0

Kallis to continue, should be the last over before Tea.

55.1

Kallis to Karthik, no run, jaffa. short and this one kicked up. Karthik takes his eyes of the ball and fends at it, luckily for him the ball clips the arm guard and pops up on the off side

55.2

Kallis to Karthik, no run, short of a good length delivery, cutting in. Karthik stands tall and defends it down on the leg side

Two men at short midwicket, standing very close to each other - one catching, and the other - beats me..

55.3

Kallis to Karthik, no run, short of a good length delivery, defended on the back-foot. Solid shot

55.4

Kallis to Karthik, no run, and the bouncer - how surprising. Karthik comfortably ducks under it

Short leg comes in place - that's much better.

55.5

Kallis to Karthik, FOUR, nasty bouncer and Karthik is all at sea, ball clips the arm guard and flies well wide of Boucher behind the stumps

55.6

Kallis to Karthik, 1 run, short of a good length, amied at the rib-cage. Karthik stands tall and nudges it away well wide of the fielder at short fine leg

And that's tea on day one. So far so good for India. It's tea and they have not lost a wicket, unbelievable in the context of this series, but true. Having said that, the scoring-rate needs to be looked into and it's high time the batsmen start driving home the advantage by playing aggressive cricket. The platform has been set and the final session looms large at Cape Town. I will leave you now with apologies for calling the 28-year-old Paul Harris a young man. Sorry that some of you were hurt by that comment. Jamie Alter will pick up commentary when play resumes.

End of over 56 (5 runs) India 153/0
KD Karthik    63* (169b 7x4)      JH Kallis    9-3-29-0
W Jaffer    84* (170b 11x4)      PL Harris    11-1-29-0

Thanks, Sajan. Hello, everyone. India are in a very strong position - neither batsman has had much difficulty on this pitch - but they may want to hurry it up a little in case the situation arises later in the match where time is of the essence. We've seen it plenty of times before where a side in the driver's seat doesnt just quite put matters into third gear and two or three days later they're in a situation where an extra 45 minutes or half hour even would have come in handy. The platform definitely has been set for a large total, and India have some solid batsman still to come. They should try and push the run rate as close to three as possible. South Africa need wickets, and fast. The final session....with Harris to continue...one slip, a silly point...serious stuff

56.1

Harris to Karthik, OUT, and he strikes first ball! Great start for South Africa! Tossed up on the stumps, Karthik loses balance in trying to flick it to leg, the ball lobs up to silly point, they all go up in appeal, and Asad Rauf lifts the finger! Karthik isn't happy...but he has to go...replays clearly show that there was no contact with the bat...in fact, Amla let it go as soon as he'd taken in, throwing it back to Boucher to try for the stumping, and even the 'keeper didnt appeal until he'd taken the throw in...a bad call from Rauf...

KD Karthik c Amla b Harris 63 (240m 170b 7x4 0x6) SR: 37.05

"Wait for the collapse people. It is just around the corner...." yelled 'Seano' from South Africa. That was just before tea. A resident soothsayer? Rahul Dravid comes to the crease

56.2

Harris to Dravid, no run, quicker through the air, some good turn there too, but Dravid defends solidly

56.3

59.3

Steyn to Dravid, no run, shorter outside off stump and staying low, Dravid gets back and looks to punch off the backfoot, but he has to adjust at the last moment to counter the lack of bounce

59.5

Thanks Jamie. Dravid's arrival has certainly boosted the Indian run-rate but one feels at below three runs per over, with just one wicket down they are looking more of a defensive outfit. This partnership is now worth 49 runs, the first 30 runs came at run-a-ball but since then the scoring rate has dropped. With another 19 overs remaining in the day's play - how many more can they add? The new ball is due in another seven overs. It has been a tiring day for the seamers and Paul Harris is asking few questions bowling with the old ball, so we will have to wait and see if Smith opts for the new ball when the time comes.

71.1

Pollock to Dravid, no run, good length delivery on the stumps, line and length delivery. Dravid gets behind the line and defends it with a straight bat

71.2

Pollock to Dravid, no run, short of a good length delivery, just the angle - no sings of reverse swing. Dravd gets a good stride in and defends it down on the off side

71.3

Pollock to Dravid, no run, forced away off the back-foot to the point region

71.4

Pollock to Dravid, no run, full in length and this one reversed in a bit. Dravid jams his bat down and drives it back to the bowler

Pollock to Dravid, OUT, gone! Pollock strikes and that's a crucial blow! Pollock hits the perfect line and length outside the off stump and Dravid goes fishing outside off stump and catches thin edge. Boucher behind the stumps makes no mistake. India two down.

R Dravid c †Boucher b Pollock 29 (63m 58b 5x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Replays indicate that the ball shaped away just a wee bit, but Dravid was clearly done in by the line and length plus a bit of extra bouce. Well bowled Polly.

Tendulkar is the next man in.

71.6

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, fuller length delivery and Tendulkar drives it crisply to mid-on

Tendulkar v Pollock - here we go.

73.6

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, fuller in length and coming in with the anlge. Excellent mix - Tendulkar jams his bat down and the ball rolls back to the bowler. End of a fine over

75.4

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, short of a good length delivery and Tendulkar shoulders arms

75.5

Pollock to Tendulkar, FOUR, fuller in length and coming in with the angle. Tendulkar gets a good stride in and punches it straight back down the track to the long-on fence. 78.4

Harris to Tendulkar, no run, padded away

Gimme red, says Makhaya Ntini. And he gets the red ball.

82.1

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, gets this one to lift sharply outside off stump, swings in too but Tendulkar keeps his eye on it and arches the back out of harm's way

82.2

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, well wide of the stumps on a good length, Tendulkar wants nothing to do with it, and why should he when its pitched so far outside off?

89.6

Steyn to Laxman, no run, pitches just outside leg stump, very close, and swings into Laxman's pads, Steyn goes down on bended knee and appeals, as does Boucher, but umpire Harper shakes his head. That was a very good shout but the fact that it pitched marginally outside leg and was moving down probably went in Laxman's favour

Thats stumps on day one at Newlands. India finish on 254 for 3, thanks to an excellent opening stand between centurion Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik, the makeshift man, who played well for his 63. They added 153 in just over 56 overs, India then lost Dravid and Jaffer, but Tendulkar has looked good for his 28 and he has Laxman for company when the second day begins.

One does feel, however, that India are some 60-70 runs short given the beauty that this track is, and that they've only lost three wickets today. To sum it up, its hard to say that it was entirely India's day even though they're in a good position.

This pitch had very little in it for the bowlers, unfortunately, and the South Africans had to strive hard for their wickets. Siddhartha Vaidyanathan was gracious enough to do a bit of writing in between meals and he has summed up the day for you, click away - it's free.

Thats it from Sajan and myself. It's been a pleasure to bring you the commentary, and we'll be back tomorrow at 10:30 am local, 8:30 GMT, 2:00 pm IST - cheers and good night, good evening, good morning...wherever you may be!

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the second day's play. I am Sajan Nair, your commentator for the day and in time I will be joined by Siddhartha Vaidyanathan. It's advantage India at the start of day two. Tendulkar and Laxman are out there and it's going to be an interesting morning session, given the fact that India will have to score at a better rate today to drive home the advantage. The weather looks good, a bit on the hotter side, but no interruptions are expected.

The pitch has been the point of debate from day one. Let me tell you that the cracks have started to widen but it still looks a batting paradise. Tendulkar and Laxman have added 14 runs, they have only been together for 4.5 overs. Not loosing wickets will be the immediate aim, India will know that with Sehwag to come there is always a chance of getting quick runs later on. The heavy roller was on so the first half an hour should not pose that many problems even though this ball is relatively new.

Having said that, a wicket up front will change the complexion of the game. Having said that, a wicket up front will change the complexion of the game. So, as far as South Africa are concerned a breakthrough is vital, the sooner the better.

Players are out there in the middle and we are all set for the start of day two. Ntini to Tendulkar and it will be Siddhartha to take you through the first hour of play - here we go!

90.1

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, Two slips and no third man. Ntini starts off with a back-of-a-length delivery. Tendulkar moves across and tucks it to the fielder at square

90.2

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, Tendulkar standing on middle stump line here and shuffling across. Ntini angles it from wide of the crease and has Tendulkar in a slight tangle. Ball richochets off the pad to the off side

90.3

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, Slightly short this time but the ball is drifting down the leg side. Tendulkar moves across and doesn't make contact as the ball goes to the keeper

90.4

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run

90.5

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, Back of a length. Outside off from Ntini. Tendulkar shoulders arms cautiously. Textbooks tell you to leave the ball that way

90.6

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, Short ball, bit straighter this time. Tendulkar hops up and gets right behind the line of the ball, playing it down well.

End of over 91 (maiden) India 254/3
SR Tendulkar    28* (63b 5x4)      M Ntini    19-4-64-0
VVS Laxman    4* (16b 1x4)      DW Steyn    20-10-41-1

Dale Steyn to open the bowling with Ntini. Strange decision not to start off with Pollock, South Africa's most impressive bowler yesterday.

91.1

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Starts off with a good-length delivery wide of the stumps. Laxman has nothing to do with it

91.2

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Straighter from Steyn this time. Gradually building up his pace as well. Laxman defends it patiently. No problem with the pace

91.3

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Getting his radar slightly wrong. Laxman just has to leave the ball alone and concentrate on the next ball

91.4

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Steyn gets it all wrong this time. Swinging away, starting wide and finishing wider. Laxman couldn't have reached that even if he tried. Maybe a pole-vault might have helped

91.5

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Widish delivery again. Swinging away. Steyn starting it a bit too wide here. Laxman shoulders arms

91.6

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Much better line. Just outside off and straightening. Laxman lets it go but there would be some indiscretion in his mind

92.2

Ntini to Tendulkar, 2 runs, slightly wide of the stumps. Tendulkar shapes to defend bu gets a thickish outside edge that trickles between the slips cordon for a brace. He was in control of that, though, loosening his wrists and keeping it down

92.3

Ntini to Tendulkar, 1 run, straight and short again, Tendulkar glides across and tucks it away easily behind square. His guard on middle and moving across seems to be working so far.

Lots of sightscreen hassles here, can we have some order please?

Pollock replaces Ntini. "There seems to be some bad blood between Smith and Pollock, with the skipper refusing to give his best bowler the new ball!" says Jimmy Munipalla.

You're not alone Jimmy.

96.1

Pollock to Laxman, FOUR, here he comes now, loosener to start off with, wide of the crease, Laxman clatters it past the infield for a easy four. Uncharacteristic ball from Pollock, characteristic class from Laxman

96.2

96.6

Pollock to Laxman, no run, wide of the stumps, length doesn't really matter because all Laxman is doing is shoulder arms

End of over 97 (4 runs) India 267/3

97.5

Steyn to Laxman, no run, Steyn running in quick but the line is still slightly awry, Laxman can leave it alone, Steyn needs to get it a bit straighter

97.6

Steyn to Laxman, OUT, CRACKER! This time he got it all right, line was on middle and off stump and moving away, length was good and the ball moved away every so beautifully. Laxman shaped to defend it but was castled with the outswing. It's a delivery that fast bowlers dream off and Steyn pulls it off, watching the off stump uprooted from the ground. He's struggled with his line this morning but what a line that was! What seam position! A magic ball there
