India in South Africa Test Series - 3rd Test

South Africa v India

South Africa won by 5 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Bhagyesh feels "Tendulkar badly needs a 100 and so does India. He has only scored 4 hundreds in the last 3 years including the double against Australia in the Sydney test exactly 3 years ago and one of those 100s was against minnows Bangladesh - hardly the record of a legendary batsmen especially when you compare that to Ponting's record over the same period."

100.1

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, good length ball on off, the legendary batsman gets behind the line and pats it back down the ground

100.2

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, defended watchfully to the off side, Pollock maintaining a good line here, unlike Steyn he's making the batsman play at almost every ball.

100.3

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, this time on middle stump, Tendulkar rocks back and defends it to mid-on.

100.4

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, driven confidently to the off side. Examines the bottom of his bat after the stroke to check if it's chipped off.

100.5

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, full and on off, Tendulkar takes a good stride forward and plonks his bat stodgily. he will not take a risk on such a beautiful day at Newlands

100.6

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, probing ball this, back of a length, outside off and coming in slightly, Tendulkar in two minds about whether to leave or not, finally decides to leave and is caught in a bit of a tangle as the ball jagged back and rapped his pad. Height was the obvious problem as the bowler lets out a huge appeal

End of over 101 (maiden) India 271/4
SR Tendulkar    35* (92b 5x4)      SM Pollock    19-7-37-1
SC Ganguly    0* (2b)      DW Steyn    25-12-46-2

101.1

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, short, crack, Ganguly has no idea of what to do with it, ducks awkwardly, takes it eyes off the ball, and takes a nasty blow on the side of his helmet, Steyn is breathing fire, Ganguly is struggling to breathe. Physio John Gloster jogs in with the magic spray. Ganguly looks like a man who's just read one page from James Joyce's Ulysses (clueless)

He's rubbing the side of his temple now, looking in trouble and drinking some water.

What a time for this comment from Aditya Pendyala: "Surely, you don't score over 15000 international runs, average above 40 in both forms of the game and score 34 international hundreds - if you are SO weak against the a particular delivery. I think we should give this cricketing legend his due credit, and focus on his prowesses as well - his glorious drives, his gifted footwork and his cricketing elegance. Hoping to hear your views."

Any second thoughts Aditya?

That's it from me for the moment. Over to Sajan for the next hour.

Thanks Siddhartha. That was a real beauty from Steyn and that's the wicket that South Africa needed so badly. Laxman's wicket will ensure that India do not run away with things. Now it's up to Tendulkar and Ganguly to forge a decent partnership and the pressure is on.... But first let us start forging the helmet which seems to be broken.

101.2

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, short of a good length and wide outside the off stump, a delivery filled with sympathy. Ganguly stays back and defends it down on the off side

101.3

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, pitched up outside the off stump, probably the attempted yorker. Ganguly jams his bat down and safely plays it down on the off side

101.4

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, good length delivery outside the off stump, width offered and the ball was there to be hit but Tendulkar finds the fielder at cover. Good shot for no runs

102.5

Pollock to Tendulkar, FOUR, good length delivery on the middle and leg stump line. Ball stopped a bit after hitting the deck and Tendulkar ended up playing it in the air towards the midwicket region, luckily for him the ball goes right into the gap between midwicket and mid-on and races away to the fence.

102.6

Pollock to Tendulkar, no run, line and length delivery, defended on the front-foot

End of over 103 (6 runs) India 281/4

Steyn to Ganguly, no run, there you go. Bouncer, angled in from wide outside the off stump, bit too high and Ganguly comfortably ducks under it

103.4

Steyn to Ganguly, (no ball) 1 run, another bouncer, well directed and Ganguly is all at sea. Fends at it and the ball spoons up of the glove, lands safely on the leg side. Just a matter of time before one finds a fielder - one feels

104.6

Pollock to Ganguly, FOUR, slightly short and angled across the left-hander. The angle creates the width, Ganguly goes back and across the slaps it away behind point for a powerful boundary. The don't call him 'god of the off side' for nothing

105.3

Ntini to Tendulkar, no run, jaffa! short of a good length and this one nipped back in sharply. Tendulkar is left searching for the ball. the edge is produced but the ball falls well shot of Kallis as second slip. SR Tendulkar c Kallis b Harris 64 (187m 130b 11x4 0x6) SR: 49.23

This is the 15th time in his Test career when Tendulkar has been dismissed by a slow left-arm spinner. Raymond Price, the Zimbabwean, has got him on three ocassions. Now Paul Harris joins the club. In the last four-and-a-half years he's been dismissed seven times. That's quite a number considering the number of left-arm spinners going around

Luckily for him the ball falls away from all the close in fielder. Harris continues to spit venom! a certain Mr.Kumble might be doing a jig in the dressing room

An entertaining morning session with the game well poised. It's again upto the Indian batsmen to forge partnerships and extend the total beyond 400. Paul Harris is using the rough outside the right-handers leg stump and getting the ball to rip prodigiously. Ganguly overcame his initial worries and settled into his groove while Sehwag, coming in at No.7, began in jittery fashion.

Let me leave you with a small stat: Tendulkar now holds the record for the most runs in away Tests (5737 runs) going past Brian Lara. Join us in a short while for the post-lunch session. Siddhartha will take up commentary when play resumes.

End of over 115 (4 runs) India 350/5

SC Ganguly    34* (37b 6x4)      M Ntini    26-4-107-0

Sehwag and Ganguly return to the middle. Lunch might have tasted good, considering India's comfortable position in this game. But they cannot afford to relax and squander their advantage.

Pollock to start proceedings.

Aseem writes in with an observation: "How much will the rough outside the right handers leg stump help Kumble?? He's not a big turner of the ball. SAFs have no left-armers.. so unfortunately there's no such rough outside the offstump. That rough outside leg would be of more use to a certain part-time leggie who took 5-32 against the aussies at Kochi in 1998."

Aseem has a point. SR Tendulkar may be India's trump card on this pitch though we've seen through the years that Kumble can spin it just enough to trouble anyone.

119.2

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, driven firmly to cover, Sehwag wants the second but Ganguly is taking no risk

119.3

Pollock to Ganguly, FOUR, neatly done, full length ball outside off and Ganguly cutely opens the face of the bat, throughout in control, steering it past the slip cordon for four. No third man again .. has anyone stood there all series? Too many fours in that area and everyone seems fine with it

119.4

Pollock to Ganguly, no run, tucked away to the on side, the fielder covers it easily

119.5

Pollock to Ganguly, 1 run, punched off the back foot to deep point for a single, scampers for a single

119.6

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, full-length ball, Sehwag tries to defend but the ball comes in shade, inside edge onto the pads. Pollock would have needed some lozenges if Sehwag hadn't got an inside edge. So loud would have been the appeal

120.1

Harris to Ganguly, 1 run, worked away behind square, too easy for Ganguly. At one point ganguly's motto in life was 'Thou shall not bowl left-arm spin' .. nice to see him dominating

For Ganguly they have a slip, short leg and a silly point in place, with the left-arm spinner bowling from over the wicket but for Sehwag the crowd is less, just a slip and short leg.

"Just wondering if Sachin has played his last test innings in SA??...that's a sad thought.. he was looking good today.. was waiting for his 36th, but not to be... " mails Prabhu.

Well Prabhu that's a good question to ponder upon and I'm sure there will be a lot of people who feel the same

121.1

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, good length ball, nipped back in off the turf in classic Pollock fashion, hint of reverse-swing? Sehwag pushes forward to defend and gets rapped on the pad. Loud appeal for lbw turned down. Didn't seem out

121.2

Pollock to Sehwag, FOUR, walks forward into the drive and threads the needle between mid-off and cover, as safe as it gets. Super shot

121.3

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, rolls away off the inside half of the bat to mid-on

121.4

Pollock to Sehwag, FOUR, back of a length, outside off, Sehwag stands there and angles his bat, ball beats the slip cordon and yes yes yes no third man again. This is surely turning into a joke now

121.5

Pollock to Sehwag, no run, defended off the front foot, no risk this time. Pollock isn't the bowler who you want to mess around with.

123.2

Pollock to Ganguly, no run, lunges forward and punched to the off side, Sehwagt again wants a quick single but Ganguly seems to say "What is the hurry?"

123.3

Pollock to Ganguly, 1 run, full ball, on the front foot and glided away to deep cover for (this time) an easy single.

123.4

Pollock to Sehwag, 1 run, short one from Pollock, rises sharply on Sehwag as he stands back. Not in control of the pull shot but manages to pop it just behind square for a single.

123.5

Pollock to Ganguly, no run, short again from Pollock, good bouncer and equally well played by Ganguly, Keeps his eyes on the ball till the last moment and weaves away at the right time. After those early problems against the short ball, Ganguly seems to have settled down. More confident, more assured.

123.6

Pollock to Ganguly, FOUR, LUCKY there. Pollock slips it wide of the off stump and Ganguly accepts the dangling carrot. The limp outstretched edge flies past Kallis at first slip and races to the boundary. Fine fifty from Ganguly, lucky but fine.

124.2

Harris to Sehwag, 1 run, turned to deep square leg for a simple single

124.3

Harris to Ganguly, 1 run, full and wide outside the off stump, crashed away all along the ground to cover point for a single

124.6

Harris to Sehwag, OUT, Sehwag tries to heave across the turn but fails to time it properly. The ball clips the top edge and soars to fine leg. Makhaya Ntini moves in from the boundary, dives well forward and plucks a superb catch a few inches from the ground. Once again the left-arm spinner provides South Africa with a crucial breakthrough. Sehwag, who was scoring quickly, is gone. What now?

Pollock to Kumble, OUT, SUCKER PUNCH! Pollock unleashes the indipper after two straight deliveries. Back of a length, pitched outside off and cuts back in sharply, Kumble isn't ready for the movement and gets hit flush on the pad in front. Umpire Harper has no doubt and the ball would have probably gone on to hit the top of off stump as Kumble was well into his crease.

Suddenly India have lost two quick wickets and are yet to reach the comfort of 400. Zaheer Khan walks in. He's scripted a couple of gutsy innings in this series and India will look for a repeat performance. Ganguly again is left to shepherd the tail.

125.4

Pollock to Khan, no run, just outside off, not much movement, Zaheer lets it go

125.5

Pollock to Khan, no run, straighter, on off stump. Pollock rarely wavers from outside off to off. Super bowling this. Defended carefully down the ground

125.6

128.1

Harris to Khan, OUT, GONE! Flighting it from over the wicket, dipping it in late, Zaheer is beaten by the flight and misses the length. Zaheer loses his balance once the ball is past him through the gap between pad and the stumps Mark Boucher, behind the stumps, whips the bails off in rapid motion. Fantastic work from Boucher. A few moments here and there and Zaheer would have been in the crease. His feet were in the air for a couple of seconds and Boucher has cashed in on that chance

Thanks Siddhartha. Yesterday Pollock was successful in reining in a rampant Rahul Dravid, and that stopped the game from slipping away after that massive opening partnership, but so far he has looked bit out of sorts (apart from that ripper that got rid of Kumble). But on the other hand Paul Harris's spell is turning out to a decisive one, so far today he has got rid of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Zaheer Khan. And he has certainly pulled things back for South Africa.

129.1

Pollock to Ganguly, no run, angled in from outside the leg stump, worked away towards square leg

129.2

Pollock to Ganguly, no run, bouncer on the middle and off stump line, bit too short and Ganguly comfortably sways away from the line

129.3

Pollock to Ganguly, 1 run, slow off-cutter. Ganguly picks it up early, leans well forward and nudges it away towards cover point, easy single added to the total

129.4

Pollock to Sreesanth, 2 runs, good length delivery outside the off stump and Sreesanth goes bang through cover. Hit in the air but right into the gap between the cover fielder.

129.5

Pollock to Sreesanth, no run, good length delivery, in the channel and this one shaped away from the right-hander. Sreesanth shoulders arms and leaves it through to the keeper

129.6

Pollock to Sreesanth, OUT, The return of polly! perfect line and length, pitched on and round the off stump line and shaping away late, Sreesanth had no option but to play at it and the thick edge goes straight to Gibbs at gully. India nine down and now Ganguly has just Munaf Patel for company.

131.1

Pollock to Ganguly, OUT, Pollock finishes it off with a slow ball. Well disguised off-cutter on the middle and leg stump line, Ganguly comes down the track in an effort to loft it straight back over the bowler's head but only manages to scoop it high up towards silly mid-off. Amla running in from cover, calls for it and nicely settles under one of the easiest catches you will ever see.

SC Ganguly c Amla b Pollock 66 (159m 75b 9x4 1x6) SR: 88.00

With the batting line-up melting, Ganguly had no other option but to go for the big one, you win some - you lose some. But in the end it turned out to a vital 66 from the south-paw, an innings that pushed the Indian total beyond 400. That leaves Harris stranded on 4 wickets on debut, Pollock ends up with four wickets and South African will be relieved to have kept India down for below 450 after yesterday's dominant batting performance.

A solid batting performance will allow them to put the pressure back on India. What will worry them though is the rough patches outside the left-handers' off stump - especially Smith and Prince - as Kumble, Sehwag and Tendulkar get into the act.
