India in South Africa Test Series - 3rd Test

South Africa v India

South Africa won by 5 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Hello and welcome - wherever you may be at this hour - to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first Test match of 2007, the third and final Test between South Africa and India at Cape Town. This is Jamie Alter, and together with Sajan Nair, I'll be bringing you all the action as it unfolds.

The scenario, on the outset, is simple: win the match, win the series. We've had some competitive cricket so far, with India winning the first Test and South Africa coming back superbly to grab the second. India will need a big improvement from their batsmen if they aspire to clinch their first Test series victory in South Africa. If you've followed the series, you'll remember that they failed to bat out the final day in Durban, so the pressure's on full strength here.

The toss: News from the ground is that India have won the toss and will bat. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, having bruised his hands badly in the second Test, has not recovered full and in his place comes Dinesh Karthik, making his first Test appearance since Zimbabwe in September 2005. Munaf Patel, who was out on the field a few minutes ago sporting a couple stitches and a tetanus injection, will replace VRV Singh. Yesterday at the net session, Munaf was resting with his left hand on the playing area and was stepped on by Gautam Gambhir. They keep finding new ways, don't they! Virender Sehwag retains his place in the XI, and the grapevine has it that Rahul Dravid may open the batting with Sehwag dropping down the order.

For South Africa, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn return from injury, while the left-arm orthodix spinner Paul Harris makes his debut. Andrew Hall and Andre Nel, who is injured, are the men to miss out. At the toss, Graeme Smith indicated that he too would have opted to bat first. So that settles the debate about the track, it definitely is more Indian than South African.

The pitch: It's a great, sunny day at Newlands, great conditions for cricket. Dileep Premachandran, our man at Newlands, noticed yesterday evening that there was a generous smattering of grass on the pitch. Ravi Shastri, who was down in the middle a short while back, said that it looked more like an Indian pitch. From the looks of it, this is a surface that will help the slow bowlers far more than those at the Wanderers and Kingsmead. Wasim Akram says both sides are "Even Stevens" on this track.

The umpires, Asad Rauf and Daryl Harper, are out in the middle. Here come the openers, Wasim Jaffer and Karthik - surprise, surprise - while the South Africans are already in their positions. Dale Steyn will begin proceedings in Test cricket in 2007, and Jaffer will face. Three slips, plus three more on the off side circle, two men on the leg side. Here we go, welcome to 2007!

India win the toss but how much of an advantage will it be in this South African citadel? Lots of personnel changes, the most interesting being Karthik opening with Jaffer. Lots of reputations at stake, too. What's your take on how this pans out?

Thanks Jamie. Considering the kind of opening partnerships we have seen so far in this series, I guess it would be safe to say that India are off to a good start here. Jaffer and Karthik have so far added 23 runs. Jaffer is looking to play his shots and Karthik is looking solid, the signs are good as far as India are concerned. With Ntini and Steyn unable to provide the breakthrough, it won't be long before we see a bowling change.

And there you go - Shaun Pollock come into the attack replacing Steyn.

12.4

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, defended outside the off stump

12.5

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, short of a good length delivery, again close to the off stump line. Jaffer shapes up for the pull, changes his mind but in the end plays a half-hearted pull and the ball rolls away towards mid-on.

12.6

Pollock to Jaffer, no run, hint of in-swing, good length and shaping back in. Jaffer leaves it through to the keeper. Well left

Time for drinks. Just 13 overs into the innings and the ball is coming on nicely, the bounce is normal and this is the best batting track we have seen in the series.

By the way - thanks for all those mails celebrating the fact that India have finally found an opening combination that lasted more that 10 overs.

End of over 13 (maiden) India 27/0

End of over 16 (8 runs) India 37/0

17.5

Kallis to Jaffer, no run, left alone outside the off stump

17.6

Kallis to Jaffer, no run, good length delivery and this one shaped away a touch, if you believe my eyes - Jaffers has a poke at it and the ball zips past the outside edge. Excellent delivery to end the over

And as expected that's lunch on day one. It was an excellent toss to win and Dravid had no hesitation in electing to bat first. India opted to open with Jaffer and Karthik and they have taken India to 61 for no loss at lunch on day one - the best opening stand by the Indians so far in this series. Pollock was the only bowler who got bit of movement out of this otherwise barren track and one feels Smith once again missed a trick by keeping Pollock away from the new ball.

"I don't think this test will head to a draw as the plan looks right, first its India winning the toss shows we are on a winning spree entering 2007, seeing the way the openers have started its very likely that we here to win a historic match and series and this will continue till the world cup and ending 2007 of only wins." - Stanley Albert at his optimistic best.

Given the state of the pitch, it's going to be another long session for the bowlers and the commentators if the Indian batsmen apply themselves and play sensibly. Jamie will take up commentary when play resumes - all the best old friend.

Sajan Nair pings me with an interesting prospect - Wasim Akram on tv mentions that he is pretty sure the ball is going to reverse when it gets a bit older and when he says so, we better believe him. So that is one thing to look forward too; can the South African bowlers get the ball to reverse is a different question all together.

Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik have forged an excellent opening partnership on a track ideal for batting. No South African bowler has really looked menacing, while Jaffer and Karthik have gone from strength to strength. What should India's game plan be from here? Do post your thoughts and share them with the others who've turned on and tuned in.
