Future Cup, 1st ODI: India v South Africa at Belfast, Jun 26, 2007
Future Cup - 1st ODI
South Africa won by 4 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)
26 June 2007 (50-over match)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first of three one-day internationals between South Africa and India at Belfast. I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for the game, looking forward to a good day's cricket.

Word from the ground is that South Africa have won the toss and they've decided to field.

India have been hit by a virus, with as many as eight players, including Ajit Agarkar, Sreesanth and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all unwell. Said Rahul Dravid, the Indian captain, on the eve of the game: "Quite a few boys in our team are suffering from viral fever and flu, and symptoms of that kind. Sreesanth, Agarkar, Dhoni, RP Singh and Ramesh Powar have not come to practice on Monday. There are other guys like Yuvraj Singh, myself, Zaheer Khan and Robin [Uthappa] who are feeling a bit down."

India have thus been forced to include two spinners, while Dhoni is still not in the XI.

India have called up uncapped seamer Ranadeb Bose and Ishant Sharma, who has one Test cap, into the squad in time for the second ODI.

South Africa are without Shaun Pollock and Graeme Smith, but captain Jacques Kallis hopes the younger players included can step up. "We are trying to find a bit of variety in our attack," he said. "Obviously, Muttiah Muralitharans and Shane Warnes don't come round every day. We need to find someone who wins the odd game for the country."

South Africa have left out Justin Kemp, Thandi Tshabalala and Dale Steyn for Andrew Hall, Andre Nel and Charl Langeveldt.

Here are the teams:

India: 1 Sourav Ganguly, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid (capt), 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Rohit Sharma, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Ramesh Powar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 RP Singh.

South Africa: 1 AB de Villiers, 2 Morve van Wyk, 3 Jaques Kallis (capt), 4 Herschelle Gibbs, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Andrew Hall, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Charl Langeveldt, 10 Andre Nel, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

Both sides enjoyed wins over hosts Ireland over the weekend, but this will be tougher cricket in challenging conditions. This is a new pitch for this game, and its expected to help the seamers initially. The sun is out, the temperature is good, and all in all a comfortable day for playing cricket. The surface, because of the generous sunshine, looks good with no cracks. It may seam around a little bit, but after a while should settle in to a good batting track.

Right, we're ready for the start. As in the game against Ireland, Sachin Tendulkar walks out to open the innings with Sourav Ganguly. 679 ODIs between them.

Ganguly will face Ntini from the Belfast City End. Two slips and a gully in place, de Villiers at point.

India finish on 242 for 8, thanks mainly to 99 from Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid's 74. A good total, in the end, given the sluggish nature of the surface. South Africa bowled well, not allowing much room to cut or drive, but for a while there Tendulkar and Dravid looked like they were about to explode with some solid shots. Dravid's dismissal, in a strange passage of play, opened the gates and India stuttered at the end.

Do join us for the South African reply shortly. I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for the day, back in a while to take you through to the end.
