New Zealand tour of South Africa, 1st ODI: South Africa v New Zealand at Durban, Nov 25, 2007
South Africa won by 2 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)
Played at Kingsmead, Durban
25 November 2007 (50-over match)

Hello, hello wherever you are, folks, and a very warm welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first one-day international between hosts South Africa and New Zealand at Durban.

I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator for the day, but enough about me; word from the middle is that South Africa have won the toss and they will field.

The teams are listed above under the gray panel. No Dale Steyn. Hmmm. And Herschelle Gibbs is unfit, so Morne van Wyk gets a game. Good chap, that Morne; had a chat with him at the Feroz Shah Kotla during the A team tour in September. By the way, India are chasing 203 at the Kotla as we speak, so do feel free to check out the site for that game. And all sorts of goodies we have for you.

Its been a tough tour for New Zealand, struggling in the warm-ups, the Tests, and losing the Pro20 game the night before last in the final over. Frankly, it seems to me that they've been in South Africa half the year, but in reality its only been two Tests and two practice matches. Such has been their tour. Its been the batting, primarily, which hasn't come to terms with South Africa's pace brigade.

As we get into the first of three ODIs, lets hope New Zealand get their act together. I just want a good game of cricket!

Here come the teams for the march-past, or whatever you call it. All lined up face-to-face. Decent weekend crowd gathered, would've expected to see more, though. National anthems playing. Touching, really. Tear drop.

Conditions look good for cricket. Pretty cool. Not sure about the rain forecast, but looks nice now. The pitch looks to have a good grass covering, no real patches anywhere, and looks to be pretty hard despite a little moisture. Not surprising then that Graeme Smith opted to bowl.

Here come the umpires, followed by South Africa and the New Zealand openers. Looks like Brendon McCullum's up the order again. He's a funky cricketer, can really give the ball a tonk. Shaun Pollock marks out his run-up and will start matters on his home ground.

0.1

Pollock to Vincent, no run, good start from the old warhorse, pitching right up there on off stump and getting a fraction of movement inside, not a very quick delivery, about 120ks, and Vincent defends

Two slips in place, by the way

0.2

Pollock to Vincent, no run, better lift this time, hitting the deck and lifting up from outside off stump as Vincent shoulders arms

0.3

Pollock to Vincent, no run, and again, this one pitches on a short length and carries high to Boucher, after Vincent gets a good look in and decides to leave it be

0.4

Pollock to Vincent, no run, full now, off stumpish, and Vincent pushes into the covers off the front foot but declines the single

0.5

Pollock to Vincent, no run, short of a length outside off stump, Vincent watches it through to Boucher

Plenty of leaving already in the first over

0.6

Pollock to Vincent, no run, short of a length outside off again, rising up nicely and Vincent shoulders arms

Pollock starts with a maiden as a rather subdued Vincent bides his time. What will McCullum do?

Here's Makhaya Ntini to share the ball with Pollock

1.1

Ntini to McCullum, 1 run, bowled from very wide of the crease, short of a length into his ribs and he calmly tucks it into the gap around the corner for the first run of the innings

1.2

Ntini to Vincent, 1 wide, quick, short and forcing Vincent to duck low as the ball sails over his head, umpire calls it wide for the excess height, well fair enough

1.2

Ntini to Vincent, no run, short of a length outside off stump, again Vincent shoulders arms

Some legend walks across the sight screen and Vincent is ticked. Its a vendor.

1.3

Ntini to Vincent, no run, good lift of the pitch as Vincent gets up tall and leaves it be, Ntini making the ball come back in off the upright seam as well today

1.4

Ntini to Vincent, 1 leg bye, fuller length, jagging back into him, he's tucked up as ball thuds into his upper thigh, then McCullum calls for a leg-bye, sharp running that

1.5

Ntini to McCullum, no run, 140ks, short of a length outside off and now McCullum leaves it be

1.6

Ntini to McCullum, 3 runs, full on off stump, McCullum shuffles and digs it out wide of mid-on, running hard with Vincent and pushing for triple as a wayward through comes back to Ntini

End of over 2 (6 runs) New Zealand 6/0 (RR: 3.00)

    • BB McCullum 4 (3b)
    • L Vincent 0 (9b)

2.2

Pollock to McCullum, no run, good channel again, cant really drive nor cut that length and so he leaves it

2.3

Pollock to McCullum, no run, hello! McCullum walks across his stumps, Pollock sees him coming and digs it in short, then McCullum tries to hook that out of the ground but just misses as the ball deviates past his gloves, Boucher collects and they all go up in raucous appeal but the umpire is unmoved

2.4

Pollock to McCullum, no run, short outside off stump, comes back in a long way and raps McCullum's chest as he shoulders arms ... thats a good length to bowl

2.5

He's left more than he did in the Tests!

2.6

    • SM Pollock 2-2-0-0
    • M Ntini 1-0-5-0
3.1

Ntini to Vincent, no run, good lord, he makes room and tries to pull a short ball outside off stump, instead chopping into the ground in front of Boucher off the toe end of the bat

3.2

Ntini to Vincent, no run, jaffa from Ntini at 140ks, angled in, hitting a sweet length and moving past his bat as he plays from his crease, how did that miss kissing the outer edge?

3.3

Ntini to Vincent, SIX, clubbed! Vincent likes the length and swivels on the back foot, pulling Ntini high and handsome over midwicket for half a dozen

3.4

Ntini to Vincent, OUT, and what a reply it is, though that was a silly shot, honestly! Ntini pitches full on the stumps and Vincent goes for some sort of drive across the line, from deep in his crease and with minimal footwork, missing by a country mile and losing his leg stump, first blood for South Africa

L Vincent b Ntini 6 (17m 13b 0x4 1x6) SR: 46.15

Jamie How is out next, in his seventh ODI. McCullum gives him some advice. 46 overs to go, son, hang in there, maybe?

3.5

Ntini to How, no run, quick delivery, pitching on a length and swinging down leg to rap him high on the knee roll, welcome, welcome, says Ntini

4.4

Pollock to How, no run, short of a length outside off stump, he gets up and leaves it be
