New Zealand tour of South Africa, 2007/08 / Commentary

New Zealand in South Africa ODI Series - 3rd ODI

South Africa v New Zealand

South Africa won by 5 wickets (with 28 balls remaining)

Right, we're almost ready for the start. Vincent's on strike and will face Shaun Pollock. South Africa have a superb record here, with 21 wins out of 30. Two slips in place.

7.35 GMT: Toss: The news from the middle is that New Zealand have won the toss and are batting.

Teams
New Zealand: 1 Lou Vincent, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Jamie How, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Mathew Sinclair, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Mark Gillespie, 11 Jeetan Patel

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Andre Nel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Charl Langeveldt

As expected and rightly so, South Africa have given Dale Steyn a game. Steyn was in devastating form in the Tests and it was mystifying why he was made to sit out of the first two ODIs. He replaces allrounder Albie Morkel. There were doubts over Graeme Smith's availability due to a virus which affected his spleen, but fortunately for South Africa, he's out of danger and will play.

New Zealand meanwhile are unchanged. Not surprising really. Almost all of them chipped in at St George's Park.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the third and deciding ODI between South Africa and New Zealand. The action shifts to the Newlands in Cape Town. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran, your commentator for the match.

7.30 GMT: We're about half an our away from the start and will bring you news of the toss and teams as soon as possible. The one-dayers in Durban and Port Elizabeth added spark and competition to a one-sided tour and the second one-dayer was entirely New Zealand's.

Pollock has been fairly miserly in his three overs so far. He is cramping the batsmen for room outside off. The pitch has offered the bowlers decent bounce, carry and away movement.

We have a delay here with the sightscreen being adjusted. Apparently there are some technical problems with the screen, and the technicians, wielding their hammers and screws are trying their level best to get it back on track...technology!

Nel to Sinclair, FOUR, the over gets better and better for New Zealand.... this was wide outside the off stump, the batsman scoops it on the full over backward point and finds the vacant area on the off side

End of over 48 (17 runs) New Zealand 223/6 (RR: 4.64)
MS Sinclair    68* (75b 6x4)      A Nel    10-0-52-1
KD Mills    10* (8b 1x6)      CK Langeveldt    9-0-40-2

48.1

Langeveldt to Mills, no run, swing and a miss, Mills loses his concentration there

48.2

Langeveldt to Mills, 1 run

48.3

Langeveldt to Sinclair, 3 runs, fires that on a yorker length outside off, Sinclair digs it out side of cover, Kallis fumbles and they go through for three

48.4

Langeveldt to Mills, OUT, Mills slips.... Mills plays it back towards the bowler and attempts a run which wasn't there. Mills runs, then is sent back, slips and falls backwards on the turn. By this time Langeveldt had already gathered the ball and underarmed it to the stumps. Embarassing for Mills

KD Mills run out 11 (21m 11b 0x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

48.5

Langeveldt to Vettori, 1 run, good length outside off, pushed to long-on

Last over coming up

49.1

Steyn to Sinclair, 1 run, backs away from the stumps, tries to slash that past short third-man but finds the fielder there

49.2

Steyn to Vettori, FOUR, innovation from Vettori and it works.... Steyn aims for the yorker on the off stump, Vettori moves across the stumps, meets it on the full and turns it wide of short fine-leg

49.3

Steyn to Vettori, no run, the slower ball and well executed in the end as Vettori failed to pick it. He swings across the line and misses

49.4

Steyn to Vettori, no run, Vettori moves across his stumps again to unsettle the bowler and Steyn wins this battle as well as Vettori fails to make contact

49.5

Steyn to Vettori, OUT, another embarassing run-out.... Steyn bowls a low full toss, Vettori fails to push it past the bowler Sinclair goes for the run anyway and sacrifices his wicket. Steyn walks to the non striker's end and removes the bails

MS Sinclair run out 73 (120m 78b 6x4 0x6) SR: 93.58

49.6

Steyn to Vettori, FOUR, Vettori finishes off the innings with a boundary...he gives himself room, flat-bats a fullish delivery past the bowler with force. The fielders patrolling long-on and long-off had no chance, thanks to the placement

New Zealand end with a middle-of-the-road total of 238 for 8. The pitch has something in it for both the batsmen and the bowlers so it should be an interesting chase. Styris, Sinclair and Oram applied themselves well though the contributions from the rest was a little disappointing. Do join us in a while for the chase.

End of over 50 (9 runs) New Zealand 238/8
DL Vettori    9* (6b 2x4)      DW Steyn    9-0-50-2
MR Gillespie    0* (0b)      CK Langeveldt    10-0-46-2
