Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the five-match one-day contest between hosts South Africa and Pakistan. This is Jamie Alter, and I'll be here till the end to take you through the series opener at Centurion.
Toss: With Inzamam-ul-Haq is fit and playing today, and he's won the toss and put South Africa in to bat.
South Africa are undoubtedly reinforced by the return of Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel. Herschelle Gibbs is serving out the last match of his ICC suspension and is set to be replaced by Loots Bosman. Bosman, having smashed an unbeaten 53 from 32 balls at the Wanderers, will bat at No.3 with AB de Villiers set to open with Graeme Smith.
Mohammad Asif gets a game, and Kamran Akmal, who played purely as a batsman on Friday, keeps wickets today. Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi, two experts at one-day level, appeared short on form at the Wanderers and must up their game over the next five matches.
Coaches' view:
Mickey Arthur said he was eager to keep the side that beat India by nine wickets in their last ODI. "There are a couple of different scenarios when it comes to replacing Herschelle, but otherwise we would like to start with the side that finished against India. You can almost consider that our best XI. I was very impressed by the skills we showed [at the Wanderers] and hopefully it sets us on the way for a good one-day series."
Bob Woolmer described the Twenty/20 loss as "abject" and hoped Inzamam would be fit: "I was very disappointed with both the batting and the bowling and we have to pull up our socks in both departments."
As Kanishkaa Balachandran pointed out in his stats preview, the recent head-to-head record favours South Africa too, with four consecutive wins. They have won 11 out of 16 previous ODIs against Pakistan on home soil and having dominated India recently, will be looking to repeat that form just six weeks ahead of the World Cup.
It will be AB de Villiers to face Mohammad Asif, who's bowling from over the wicket. He has one slip in place. How do you think this match will pan out? Let us know.

Writes Kash: "This is what happens when an ill planned strategist like Inzi keeps on persisting with players like Akmal and Rana who are disastrously out of form. Its early days but this could very well be the shape of things to come. The Springboks already gave them a wake up call in the Twenty/20 match."
And on that note, heeeeeeeere's Rana

Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,

who begins with a terrible wide way outside off stump, just couldnt control the slower one
|
16.1 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
(no ball) FOUR,
its a no-ball, to which Smith advances down the track and smokes that powerfully straight back down the ground for four, and thats his 50
|
16.1 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
FOUR,
again he looks to get on top of Rana, and advances down the track to a shorter one, collecting it with one hand and finding the gap on the offside for another boundary
|
16.2 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
FOUR,
ho ho, make it three in a row, folks! Rana's misery continues as he tries the bouncer and gets no assistance from the pitch, Smith just pulls that well between midwicket and square leg for four more
|
16.3 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
FOUR,
carnage, simply carnage! Overpitched, marginally, and Smith's in such form that he just leans forward and drives it to the right of Inzamam at mid-off, who just lazily turns around and knows all he has to do is collect it from the ropes
|
16.4 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
FOUR,
now he charges down and collects a fuller one, slamming it high down the ground, a bounce and over the ropes for four...thats 22 from from the over so far...Rana, Rana, Rana
|
mid-on goes back, third man moves fine, and Rana moves around the wicket
|
16.5 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
1 wide,
and bowls a wide down the legs, poor, very poor
|
16.5 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
FOUR,
luckless is Rana! He bowls a full toss outside off stump, Smith comes down and slams the bat it, and the result is a thick edge down to third man for four...insane batting this from Smith
|
16.6 |
Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith,
no run,
now he bowls a slower one, but again on the legs, and Smith comes forward and chips him wide of mid-on.... a DOT ball, would you believe?

Sal: "Pakistani bowlers are fairly useless in most one day internationals. Asif is the only world class bowler and even he has taken a regular hammering. Yasir Arafat and Saqlain Mushtaq will be better than just about every bowler that is in the team. Has Saqlain retired or what? Pakistani selectors and Inzamam are ridiculously senseless in ignoring these players."
Now we have Mohammad Hafeez coming on to bowl some spin
|
18.1 |
Mohammad Hafeez to Smith,
no run,
tossed up on the stumps, Smith drives back to the bowler
|
18.2 |
Mohammad Hafeez to Smith,
OUT,
stumped second ball, and the spinner does the damage! It was a brave move, as the PowerPlay was on, but Hafeez backs his instincts, firing a quicker, flatter one outside off stump and getting Smith to leave his crease, eyeing the big hit to the onside, and all Akmal has to do is whip off the bails
|

|
18.4 |
Mohammad Hafeez to Bosman,
FOUR,
well, how long was he going to hang around? Hafeez fires on in outside off stump and Bosman gives him the charge, hammering it over mid-off for four
|
18.5 |
Mohammad Hafeez to Bosman,
OUT,
got em! Hafeez! This one's not got much on it, but it lands on a good length just outside off stump, and Bosman, perhaps looking for the turn, plays at it off the backfoot and gets the thinnest of edges into a gleeful Akmal's gloves

Naved-ul-Hasan to Kallis,

Naved-ul-Hasan to Kallis,
no run,
its slow, its full, and its outside off stump, Kallis waits for it and has to reach for it, gets beaten, looks at the umpire, who doesnt call it wide and heads for the pavilion

So South Africa end up eight short of 400. What an innings. Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and inserted the hosts, then watched as his fast bowlers were taken to task by the openers and Kallis and Boucher down the order in a breathtaking exhibition of power hitting. At one point, when Kallis and Prince were just working singles against a disciplined spin trio, you may have got the feeling that Pakistan may crawl back, but Boucher scrubbed such childish notions. He and Kallis blasted South Africa to 392 for 6, and Pakistan have their task cut out for them.
Do join me in about 40 minutes time - thats 14:21 local, 12:21 GMT for their reply. Cheers.
